This is a very boring 20 minute long video. I suggest you don't watch it unless you need to know how to assemble a ford focus bonnet lock barrel assembly

at 15:40, you don't just put the spring on the plastic bit. You have to lodge one of the prongs at one end of the spring against the protruding bit of plastic and then using a screwdriver push the spring from the other prong over. So that when you turn the key in the barrel it will centre itself automatically.
@jcwh28 жыл бұрын
Yeah - well spotted - I missed that originally! Works ok, but as you say, doesn't re-centre properly.

Yep. Thanks for the video though... Very informative and saved me a lot of swearing. I didnt go all the way rebuilding the lock.. I swapped my entire mechanism to housing..

Great video, and 10 years later I'm now watching it. Thanks for doing this, I'm now on my 3rd bonnet lock but this time I've got the alloy one, no more plastic. Will take note on 15:40 👍

Thanks, that vid just simplified my life. Just to add, my kit came with numbers 1 to 5, but only 11 and 15 for the other side with letters B, C and D, but it didn’t take long to work out that these would be 12, 13 and 14.

Awesome thanks so much for this wouldn't have managed to replace my lock without this video. My keys are old and different amounts of wear so ended up removing one tumbler and filing the others so that they were flush with the barrel.

Thanks for this. Couldn't find any mechanics keen on building the cylinder. Convinced one guy that I'll do the cylinder build if he could do everything else. Thankfully he agreed and managed to get it all sorted. I did manage to drop the springs a few times but got there in the end. This tutorial was great. Thanks again.

I just realised how old this video is, but your an absolute star my sons bonnet didn't open after I put a different style grille in for him, even though I was extremely careful with the lock, but the grille didn't give up easily and I didn't check before I closed the bonnet doh😣....... Fishing forceps pulled the rubber boot off, pushed forceps into plastic pushed lock with the key and 20 seconds after pulling the rubber boot off, I was in....... Thanks again 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

What an amazing tutorial. I was quoted £300 by a Ford garage (yes, that is not a typo!) to get my bonnet working again, and I would have ended up with a 2 x key car! Of course, if Ford had have designed a proper bonnet release in the first place, you know, like a lever in the cabin (!), it would have saved us all alot of grief...

Excellent video. Great instruction for a very tricky job - thank you. You have saved me £250, as my Ford dealer wanted £300. I had to destroy the plastic bonnet lock assembly completely, as my Focus Bowden Cable had snapped. I also had to use tin snips to cut out the grill. A new grill cost me £19 and a new Bowden Cable repair kit £32, both off Ebay. Thank you, once again.

No instructions came with the purchase of the new unit, so I had a go at trying to figure it out myself as I'm pretty logically minded. Got about half of it correct, but resigned myself to having to take it it in to a garage. This video explained all the gaps in my guessing, and I will crack on again when I get home! Thanks!

Great video and so glad it is here. A couple of points to add to the video info: 1) I purchased FINIS 1343577 today and it only came with 8 springs too so this must be the standard Ford pack and you have the option of which 8 holes you use, instead of all 10. 2) In case you were wondering, the lock kit does come with the plastic cross clip that connects the lock mechanism to the latch, already fitted. Saves you buying a separate one if yours is broke. 3) In the video, the spring seems to be just placed on the black end piece with the two fingers either side of the black plastic post. Although this will provide some spring back, it will not be enough to return the lock to the centre position fully. Instead the spring must be placed on top of the black piece under tension. You do this as you fit the spring by placing the lower spring finger to the left of the plastic post and the top finger to the right of the post. If you have done this correctly then if the whole lock is carefully tipped upside down, the spring should not fall off. Hope this additional info helps.

I have just fitted a complete assembly after looking at the first 55 seconds of your video, showing how to remove the white cross part by simply pulling it. Actually, I'm glad I watched your excellent video, because I suspect, had I tried to do what you did with the lock rebuild, I'd either have lost some springs, thrown it all out of the window or lost the will to live or all three. Well done with your video and once again, I'm glad I bought the complete item. Thanks.

Thanks for this. I just saved $400NZD by ordering the part from Amazon (cheaper than Ford NZ, who refused to give me the part number) and then a few hours slowly going through your video. I also found some ford manuals online that I correlated with your video. I think the spring assembly has to be crossed over the black peg (according to the ford manual). Other than that I highly commend your succinct, simple, well produced video that is saving unlucky Ford owners like myself money!

HiMany many thanks for uploading this video. You have helped me a great deal. I managed to get my bonnet open without damaging the grill or anything else. The cable was completely sheered off so the whole locking mechanism was replaced. Of note, the plastic cross piece connection can be replaced, there is a direct replacement part on Ebay which prevents the locking mechanism from displacing, preventing the problem re occurring. It's a tamper proof mechanism that has never worked properly so I won't miss it. Thanks again anyway.

Thanks!....Great video... Can't believe Ford don't put any instructions in the kit. The only recommendation I would make is to work out each key tumbler one at a time, then remove it and write the sequence down as you go. Once you know all the correct tumblers for each slot, build them in one go. That way you don't keep dropping the little springs. Thanks again for making this... save me trying to work it all out for myself.

Just had to do this. One little note, the spring will need to be positioned around the black plastic bit to keep the whole thing nice and tight when you turn the key. Other than that, it's a very good guide and saved me the time to having to work out the engineering behind it myself. Thanks mate.
@philber9 ай бұрын
Agreed, the barrel should spring sharply back to centre when key released. This is done by 'over-wrapping the spring on the black plastic bit.
@shogus19857 жыл бұрын
Hello,Thanks a lot for a great video much appreciated, saved me a lot of time. There is a small mistake at 15:40, when you fit the spring. The two ends of the spring need to overlap over the plastic bolt (so you put both ends at the one side of the plastic bolt, and then you force the second end - further from the bolt and pull it over the plastic bolt.) this will greatly improve precision of the recoil spring, and it will align the key perfectly - no loose key). Thanks again!

Thanks for the video, it worked perfectly. My kit had 8 springs and no number 12s which I think it needed 2 but it wasn't an issue. My only problem was I could not get one of the small pins in at the end, it came unrolled. I will look for something else I can hammer in. EDIT - I hammered out the long pin from the old barrel and then snipped it to size once it was in place.

Great video : purchased a repair kit on Ebay , no instructions, and a great pile of brass bits amongst other things.Watched your video several times and saw how to re-build the lock.Had a few mishaps, which resulted in springs & brass bits everywhere - several times :-(Eventually as I re-built the barrel, I wrote the brass numbers on the barrel with an permanent pen, against where they went.I could then rebuild when I had another mishap !I did finish by using a fine piece of emery paper, with the key in the lock, just to take off any high spots on the brass bits.Thanks

fantastic video mate, a real life saver. just one mistake, the spring needs to be crossed over the black plastic peg so its taught and under load, that is what gives the spring feeling when you turn the key left to right . if you don't cross the spring you don't get the return when you let go of the key! it would still work but you wouldn't get the sensation of the key self centring as you let go. overall excellent video I was really struggling. thanks
@pedrosousa74936 жыл бұрын
georgegleek you’re absolutely right! If the spring ends are not crossed on the black plastic piece pin, the spring feels kind of loose. After crossing all feels much more sturdy and the key returns to center position just like OEM lock

the barrel on our focus knackered, so this vid has been a life saver ...well, a £150 saver (which is what Ford wanted to sort it!) Couple of things that might help others ...we bought the updated Kuga/C Max replacement kit, which is supposedly more robust & we didn't bother fitting the key pins/springs, which still works (although now ANY ford key will work) as it just wasn't worth the effort (& less things to wrong - as we think one of the pins seized on the previous barrel) ...& due to the cars value being so low, it doesn't really matter
@RommelADC6 жыл бұрын
Very useful video - thank you so much. Thought this would be a painful job but with the help of your video it turned out to be very straightforward. One thing I did differently, which made it a bit easier was that instead of trying to hold in all of the little plates and springs into the barrel at the same time while trying the key, I only tried one plate and spring at a time and recorded the result in a matrix on a sheet of paper. I numbered the slots in the barrel 1 to 8 along the vertical and wrote the plate numbers (1 to 5 and 11 to 15) along the top horizontal side. I put a tick in the relevant box (e.g. if plate 5 fits in slot 1 without sticking out, I put a tick in the 5th box on the top line) and an "X" otherwise. Then when each one had been tested, you could read off the "code" from the matrix/table.
