We're joined by Lyn Woodward from Kelley Blue Book to see which compact off-roader is the best of this bunch. The Jeep makes more power and has an actual transfer case, but the Bronco Sport is lighter and has fresh style.

One hugely overlooked item here is the fact that the Trailhawk can tow 4500lbs, whereas the bronco sport is limited to 2200.

But it’s a gas guzzler compared to the BroncoSport Badlands 2.0 L Turbo engine and it has more torn than the Jeep. The price is also more interesting.

Each vehicle has its good against cons. The good for jeep is towing. But 2200 lbs is enough for my 4x6 enclosed trailer 3000 axles. My badlands still accelerate like a sport car with the trailer. Smile. The Jeep is good car too probably after it comes to look and interior preferences. I like sound insulation and confortable seat and b&o sound system and 400w inverter

Pedantic point of correction - the Cherokee has a Power Transfer Unit, not a transfer case. Transfer cases are generally chain driven, the PTU in the Cherokee is gear driven, more similar to a differential or an old school power takeoff than a t-case honestly. There's also a big difference between the locker in the Cherokee and the "locker" in the Bronco Sport, which seemed to be kind of glossed over. The Cherokee has an honest-to-goodness mechanical locker, but the Bronco Sport uses a clutch-based system that will still allow for slip. That makes a big difference in doing anything more than forest roads, especially in these little CUVs that are going to be constantly on 3 wheels in any kind of actual, tough off roading. And, with these limited articulation vehicles, the Cherokee has a factory rock rail option, the Bronco Sport does not, which is an important consideration.

This was 2 years ago. So probably didnt know enough then. But we know now that the dual clutch system is incredibly effective and does the same thing. Its not a Bronco, its not a Wrangler, it also isnt 60 to 100+k dollars..... Most people who own these super Jeeps or Broncos dont do more than trails anyway. Be honest. Cleanist trucks around I see are these monster Jeeps! So sparkly lol.

I purchased the Cherokee Trailhawk over the Bronco. The real rear locking differential was a key feature that I was looking for and it's a tremendously good value based on price verses its on and off road capabilities . I'm sure the Ford will hold its value better over the next few years but that only matters if you're not going to hang on to it. The Jeep was just the smarter purchase.

Trailhawk has true rear locker, not a limited slip unit that can overheat. Trailhawk has a true 4WD low range. Trailhawk can tow over twice the weight. For those 3 reasons (and a few more) I picked the Trailhawk. I wanted something that can take me off-road to scenic locations, and also can tow a small camper comfortably. The Trailhawk is really the only compact SUV that has serious off road capability AND 4,500 towing (with the V6...)

Lift The Cherokee Trailhawk 2 inches for $200 and it will destroy basically everything but the Big Bronco and the Wrangler. A lifted Cherokee Trailhawk actually might beat all of the stock Wranglers but the Rubicon in some Scenarios.

Your comment, which I appreciate since you put in real work off road, doesn't make that much sense... since you say every Trailhawk you built was cheaper than a Sport Badlands. The Jeep literally starts more and goes higher quickly. When every Bronco Sport I build stays under the Jeep we drove. Now that said, if dealers near you are marking up the Ford that's a different story and that sucks. But dollars for dollars based on online shopping tools... the Ford is cheaper. ALso, what did you order, legit curious?

@@TheHooniverse it was probably due to incentives… but the Trailhawks I was finding were about 33-34k. This was probably two months ago. The badlands were I want to say 37-40k, but I have the screenshots somewhere showing all of this. I couldn’t believe it myself and went to Ford dealer and chatted a bit with them. The dealer agreed he couldn’t get the badlands in and that they were more expensive than the Trailhawks I showed him. It was also a new vehicle so I think it’ll be better to judge this after the novelty wears off. I’m actually getting two vehicles. One is old, one is being built. I’m more excited about the old one. I’m not announcing what they are till I actually have them in my possession as things can happen… but the new one is pretty much the exactly same as what I have as a 2021 model.

I do not get where they saw badlands was crazy cheaper. and I'm lost at their decision of the bronco say it's better overall. but they mentioned how the cherokee has a true 4wd, 4low, transfer case, skid plaes throughout, lockers that work (yes it's axel style. but the bronco is more like a sticker that does not work). also has a v6 (which they said they wish the bronco had)........ I guess they wanted something to go on the road and do a meh trail is what it came down to.

At 1:31 minutes into it they are talking off road "it's better than what it that called the Gladiator". Unibody vs. full frame for off road and you state a unibody is better. For the price of a jeep cherokee trailhawk you could get a little older grand cherokee laredo (trailrated) and put a 3 inch lift on it with slightly bigger tires. That's what I did and I think it seems smoother without the air suspension. Jeep is legendary as far as off-road capability when it comes to technical conditions and the limited slip differential is sweet. I've only had to use 4 low once or twice but it is a beast when it does. Also the 3.6 is probably a more reliable engine than the turbo in the long run but who knows right now for sure.

So far 4 dealers in south Florida told me they had a badlands on the lot. I flew to them only to find they haven’t had one in weeks and have no idea if/when they’ll have another. With that said I also went to buy a wrangler unlimited that was “in stock” only to have a sales person try to sell me a 2017 because they don’t have any wranglers.

trailhawk also has true skid plates and a better lockers because it's set up as axels. While broncos set up is basically not doing it. it's like a sticker. also real 4WD, transfer case. 4low. and don't forget v6...... bronco has a better highway on flat ground..... wrangler and then 4runner and then cherokee is very close to a 4runner (the edge goes to 4runner because better lift options and ground clearance. MFC cherokee lift will get you a ground clearnce almost 14" at lowest point.)

If you want to spend less (nothing wrong with that!), stick to the base model Bronco, but then should be comparing it to Honda CRV or Toyota RAV4. Wow, you guys didn't even mention the Cherokee has been around for years in current form vs the new Bronco Sport... rather you just kept calling the Jeep "dated". Not really a fair comparison there at all. Also, the Jeep wins hands down if you're going to tow or use it on something a bit or even more than a bit more difficult than that technically simple level dry dirt road. This would be a better comparison for Soccer Moms to be honest. And there's no way I'd ever choose a 4 cyl turbo over a NA v6 for such a vehicle. Ever! @frh-freerangehuman

Decent review. Considering the BS was meant to compete against the Jeep Compass or Renegade, I think the fact people are even considering it up against a Cherokee Trailhawk is pretty respectable. I traded my Flex in on a Badlands Sport based solely on looks. I like the looks better than the Jeep. But, I have been pretty amazed at where I’ve been able to go in it. I wish I’d had them trade up the tires to the wild peak tires. The pirelli are respectable and on road are good and I found them great in deep snow. In wet clay they meet their limitations but I haven’t gotten stuck yet. I go on some local trails that the atvs and Jeep’s use and it’s done well. I did land it in a 2 foot hole going up a rocky trail that I didn’t check first and I tore up the plastic bumper a bit but even then it walked out of the hole. I find it rides very well over rough terrain. I’ve been super happy with it especially since it’s my first off-road capable vehicle. Yes the towing is limited but that’s not a concern for me anyway. I’m certain Ford looked long snd hard at every Jeep model when designing both the Bronco Sport and the big boy Bronco. I’m in Canada and mine rang in at $46,000 CDN.

You can tell someone was paid off by Ford on this. They didn't even mention the fact that the Cherokee has a true rear locker, how could they have skipped that very important detail? For offroad purposes (which is the main reason for buying a Badlands), the Badlands Bronco Sport is subpar compared to the Cherokee Trailhawk. They should've compared it to like a Subaru Crosstrek. Only thing I got from this is how cushy the suspension is on the Bronco.

How much money did Ford pay these people to fake this video and say that the Bronco Sport is a better off-roader than the Trailhawk? They should have compared it to the Cherokee Sport without 4 Low and the rear locker. Then it could be based solely on styling which is all they based their preference on. This Bronco sport would get stuck long before the Trailhawk. Per someone's comment below, you could have sat in the parking lot and had the same discussion if all you were going to base it on was looks.

I think the summary was dead on: If you want something more off road and towing capable the Trailhawk is the pick. If you want a smooth ride driving to the mall maybe in a snow storm or the occasional dirt road the Ford is the way to go. I went from a stock 14 Cherokee Latitude 3.2L to a 17 Trailhawk 3.2L lifted 2" with 31" KO2s and they are totally right on how much more "doggy" the TH is with all that added weight. My mileage went from 18/26 in the Latitude to 16/21 in the TH but at least I don't have to run that expensive 91 octane for the turbo that you can't always find in the back country off roading. Maybe a more fair comparison is the Cherokee Latitude equivalent now with the 2.0 vs the Bronco Sport 4 cyl since they stole the "GOAT mode" concept from Jeep who's been offering the same for a long time.
