I was really inspired after this video. I am not a mechanic, I am a master plumber, this video was so good, I checked out the tools and bought the parts, and it worked!!! I used two map gas torches and it came loose. The caliper bracket bolts gave me the biggest trouble, four hours beating the locktight out. I also scratched the thread putting the new ball joints it, the press slipped off. I bouhht the biggest compressor I could fit in my shed, I cracked it up to 150psi for the caliper bolts

very good thank you, the tip on not beating where you heat, never heard that before great. some simple editing sotfware can be used to cut that piece out in the middle. if you set your focus to manual and open it to max then slight changes in your angle won't have the camera hunting for a point to focus on. you can never have to much (soft) lighting thats does not cause glare in the shot

Just watched as I thought I was doing something wrong for the upper ball joint(still won't move). I adapted an 8" cut-off wheel to my large grinder(smaller grinders won't get in to cut all the way through--knuckle housing in the way) and cut the lower ball joint; then easy removal with the "C" clamp(I have exactly the same one you do--OTC-over 40 years old!). Howeve, the bottom ball joint would still not come out, so I drilled a center hole and then a steel hole saw slightly less in diameter tan the bottom round part. Eventually, was able to air hammer out the remainder. Both sides needed to have the ball joints sliced(didn't want to use torch as very worried about changing the temper of the knuckle). Now, back to the uppers--ugh

I watched this and some other vids before I did my 93 E-350. By watching these videos before I did mine, it made it it feel like I'd done it before. I bought the Harbor Freight basic ball joint kit, and got it taken apart OK but then when putting it back together, I realized I needed the complete "Harbor Freight Master Ball Joint Kit"...it had the correct spacers I needed to do it. I ruined the big C-Clamp Press by not using the proper spacers...no biggy, I'll buy another if I ever have to do this again, but I could have avoided it by maybe wire brushing off around the ball joints before deciding which spacers to use...I tried using the wrong spacers and so the C-Clamp was pressing against itself, and the C-Clamp Press just bent itself open...it still worked, but if I was to do it again I"d buy another new press and be more careful...with teh proper spacers. It actually went pretty easy once I got the right spacers in place. This video is GOLD, thanks for sharing. This job took me prolly 4 hours...could have gone half the time with proper spacers.

I used a pickle fork to get the ball joints to break loose. I have a torch but use it sparingly as a last resort. The lower is the one that is the problem, the upper is a snug fit in the alignment sleeve but is relatively easy to get out.

Thank God I have not experienced the lower ball joint hanging up like that, but I use a 4 lb hammer. When I do this job on E250 & E350s, it never requires more than 2 hits. I also use a cordless IR 7150 cordless impact, since I am out in the field and it pushes them right out.

You do not need to remove the rotor when replacing the ball joints. This way you don't have to clean and repack the bearings. It is also a good idea to mark the position of the camber adjuster so you can reinstall it in the same position. Never use a torch to remove the lower ball joint. If he was to have used a heavier hammer and a little more force the ball joint would have fallen out.
@Biggyniner
@Biggyniner 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly, the Ford shop manual says specifically to not use heat during ball joint removal. It can weaken the components.

Never heat the knuckle up take a three pound hammer and hit the housing where the lower ball joint tapered shaft comes through this works on every car or truck works 100 out of 100 times with 3 to 5 good hits
@robroy9793
@robroy9793 5 жыл бұрын
I agree! I would be making this knuckle head purchase new I beams. You never use a torch on steering or suspension parts. You look at the video! He clearly heated up more than that ball joint! You take two hammers and shock the I beam right where the ball joint is and it will drop out.

Great video. (but a bigger hammer might have made it easier to break the lower joint loose. Fords don't even pay attention to anything less than a 3 lb hammer)

Oh yeah, you think that we are the only ones that do it. Guess again. I appreciate your concern. This video was made 8 years ago and that van is still running good with the same ball joints. No problems and if you don’t want to heat it, then don’t . But like I have stated numerous times, these videos are made for tutorial purposes only on the way I do things. You do not have to do it this way.

For anyone that might be doing this job (I have) you need to be careful of the cinch bolt that holds the upper ball joint Camber/Caster alignment sleeve in place. In Ford's infinite wisdom, instead of a thru bolt with a nut (as they now use on some axles) this one is threaded into the axle itself. If you break the bolt, as I did on my very rusted E250, you're in for a real workout to get it drilled out. Also, minor point the person in the video says that he's "beating on the Spindle" when in reality it's the steering knuckle he's beating on. It's best to use either a pickle fork or a ball joint separator to remove the lower ball joint from the axle. Heat really is a no-no on cast parts, especially those related to steering.

Thanks for posting this video, you made it look easy. I gotta change the ball joints on both of my 02 Excursions, 2WD with 300K+ miles and 4WD with170K+ miles. My chilton manual was not very helpful with this job, in fact my manual says that the 2WD drive ball joints are not serviceable at the time of manual printing. Hey handy man, If heat is needed, do you think a propane plumbing torch will generate enough heat to free up ball joint? My first time replacing ball joints on any car. Thanks!

Just bought a 99 E350. Drove it home from CA to CO. Tires were pretty shot on it I could see when they FaceTime’d me showing them. I took several mounted wheels and tires along. The rears on the van were far better than the fronts. I pulled the fronts and moved the rears forward. Put two on rear I brought. The fronts I removed were both heavily worn on the inside. Van sitting looks toe’d in. After driving it home 859 miles, the shocks and springs hold it well no float or prolonged bounce over surfaces. Now, here’s the question. If an alignment can not fix the excessive toe in, is the problem most likely the ball joints are shot, or is there something else that would cause the inner wear and toe in I should look at first?
@handymanPF
@handymanPF 5 жыл бұрын
Toe is usually adjusted by the tie rods. The ball joints would effect your camber adjustment.check for play in your tie rod ends, steering bushings.

I know any Company such as otc tools etc will void the warranty if the threads get damaged due to being used with an impact gun . But the again i am sure there are many other's out there such as yourself that have used an impact on a tool that the manufacturer that clearly states not to & never any viseable wear to the tool . Perhaps it's not so much damage to the tool after all but rather liability issues due misuse . Biggest thing is to be careful / take the time to do it right . And of coarse lots of penetrating oil on the threads to extend the life of the tool . Thanks for sharing this video & for listening .

That sleeve on the upper ball joint is for alignment. They make them in different offsets. Be damn sure you put the right one back in or you will need need tires quick. As they come in 5 sizes to set camber. And they do wear out. I seen people replace the upper ball joint and reuse the old sleeve. Still have the same problem. So replace it....

+handy man Thanks for getting back to me so fast. Basically, I paid a ton of money to a rip off mechanic that got me for a few grand and didnt actually fix the real problem. Also my business is dying rite now. So, now im just selling my silverado because my business failed, and I am out of money. I want to buy one of these and fix it up a little as an RV and live in it for awhile so I can get my business back on track. What do I wanna be looking for? I see these for sale all of the time on Craigslist. I do hear a lot of positive reviews about these vans going into 2 and 300k miles and still running good. I just dont have much money left, so I am definitely buying one on a small budget. Do you have any thoughts you could share about this? thanks!

While working in a ford truck shop we had a front end 230lb tech who needed my assistance putting the knuckle back on with hub/rotor still attached after he flat rated his ball joint repair. SOB was heavy as heck. He ended up dropping the hub/rotor/knuckle on my thumb. Lost my nail, and we watched blood splatter everywhere. Rule of thumb, either take hub/rotor off when doing ball joints, or where brand new thick working gloves.

We struggled almost as much as you did. If anyone needs any help with this job, just ask me and I'll kick you square in the face and run like Hell.

the problem is the stock ball joints are smooth and most replacements that I've seen are grooved like splines Plus powder coated which makes them just big enough that they fight going back in the holes. I have found that if you take a wire wheel and get the powder coating off and then grease both the ball joint and the hole they go in much easier. I've spent 14 hours trying to change one side on an f250 4x4, so I feel your pain.

Yikes. Ford probably has the most difficult ball joint set up in the history of automobiles. 😐
