Dorman sells reman clusters, and O'Reilly's has a service for fixing clusters. There are many rebuild services for clusters and also diy kits for replacing the small motors. So, there are many options out there.

I resoldered an instrument panel a 99 Windstar to fix an erratic gauge issue. If I recall correctly, there were two pcb's in the panel, one for logic and the other for the lights and gauges. The ribbon connectors between the two boards had poor solder joints (from the factory) and some of them developed cracks or had worked loose.

Put the defective part back on the shelf?? Sounds like what they do with the IV machines down at the hospital. I was the patient in a large cardiac ward. The attitude was 'maybe someone else can make it work'. So toss it back out in the hallway. My secular experience in plant Operations furnished me with insight and the right questions. If I were in charge I sure as heck would fix that problem. It's actually an administration problem. Maybe I would go and sit on the boss's desk until something was done. I had training in some medical equipment decades earlier. I think it shows a lack of good middle management. The chief head nurse could do it too -that is, run a system where the faults are documented, repaired and tested, and then tag this info to a permanent file for that piece of equipment. And train and test the nurses on how the equipment works and how to handle it's shortcomings.

Probably a huge shot in the dark here, but here goes: I have a 1998 Ford F-150 XL with the 4.6L V8 (W), regular cab, short bed, rear wheel drive. It starts 95% of the time, but randomly at times it won't start. It is currently in a repair shop and they are scratching their heads. They have verified the battery, starter, alternator and fuel pump (brand new) are all good. It has a new ignition lock cylinder and ignition switch which have also been ruled out. New fuel filter, too. It will start up just fine 95% of the time, but once in a while it just won't start at all unless they jump the starter solenoid. Once started, it runs "like new," doesn't die or stall, has good compression, no leaks, and isn't throwing any codes. Any ideas?

Used a Napa temp sensor on a 93 Wrangler. Thought vehicle was overheating. Kept chaseing and over heating issued for days while I never actually had one. Sensor was just off. Put in old factory one and temp read perfectly. Was trying to do prevention maintenance while head was off. How many sensors have they sold that are wrong if they havent gotten it right since 93 I don't see how they are still in business.

You’ve shown that the signal from the sensor is noisy, but you haven’t shown that a repaired cluster wouldn’t work with the NAPA sensor. It could be that a properly working cluster would dampen the noisy NAPA signal and give you a clean speedometer anyway

Excellent diagnosis. If you had the schematic for the cluster we could probably fix it. Ford clusters had flaky wiring back in 2000. Could have started earlier. I've had the 2000 Windstar cluster go flaky twice and the engine computer once. Sometimes if you whack the dash in just the right place everything goes back to normal. I ran the Windstar for years like that cuz I know just where to whack it. Taught my wife. It was so funny to see her do it too. But I finally changed the cluster and drove to southern California in sone very hot weather. The van ran like a dream and maybe burned a half a quart of oil. From Vancouver that's not bad. Hard to find a good cluster but I was lucky for that trip. Now this cluster is doing it too but it needs to be whacked in a different place. Works. Next time I intend to resolder the wiring myself since I'm a printed circuit guy from the 70's. I saw at least one KZfaq video on resoldering these clusters. But you also need a strong magnifier with a good light. And the right tools and solder. Basically it helps to have previous circuit board experience. If this were your first circuit board repair, I'd let an expert do it. Most novices are downright terrible at soldering.

yep willing to bet if you tore those apart the windings in the ford would be thinner wire and more of it. the aftermarket fewer windings and larger wire. still outputs but there is less reluctance in the magnetic field thus more prone to induction spikes. your drill test is the perfect example at low speed why the old fashioned meter with a needle is better(d'arsenal movement). your digital meter sample rate is just too slow to keep up. oscilloscope time! its a 1998 so figure on bad solder joints in the panel. reflow with some good solder will likely fix it. i remember way back some makes put the sensor for the computer on the back of a mechanical speedometer. a bad or sticky spedo cable would cause all sorts of headaches!!!

Alright folks.. before you go shitting on Napa, realize that Echlin is under the umbrella of Standard motor products, and there are plenty other stores besides Napa that use their stuff, just in a different box. Also, we lucked out and found a bad one out of the box? It happens. We recently had issues with more than one alternator directly from Ford on a newer diesel truck, since one wasn't yet available aftermarket. It was charging, but the truck still gave a bad charging system code. So, point is, it can happen anywhere. On the other hand though, excellent diagnosing🙂

As always, another great diagnostic adventure. It's a real bummer that aftermarket parts are of such poor quality. NAPA can do better that that!

Just go to a junkyard and take one off of a wrecked van the miles and everything will still read the same. Your videos are amazing thank you for your knowledge and providing it to the world for others to learn

How would the miles be the same on a mechanical odometer?

The miles won't be the same but the mechanical ones are easy to wind to whatever mileage you want

After much contemplation and analysis, I've determined it either needs a new flint or is low on lighter fluid. No need to thank me.....you're welcome.

Brian, I had asked before about getting an EVTM for my 2001 Mustang. You said that you haven't seen one in a long time. Understood, I'm an Old Fart who was a Ford Tech in the 80's and 90's..... BUT, that printout you showed at the 20:05 point IS a page out of an EVTM!! Where did you get that - and where can I get the Program that has that? Thanks and Merry Christmas!!🎄 Carmine ✈🚂🚙

I still have access to the Ford PTS website for technicians. I was talking about the EVTM books we had back at the dealership in an upstairs rooms from the 80's.
