Ford Escort EXP - Weird and charming 1982
The Ford EXP is a sports compact coupe that was produced and sold by Ford Motor Company in North America from the 1982 to 1988 model years. The first two-seat Ford since the 1957 Thunderbird, the EXP made its debut at the 1981 Chicago Auto Show. Sharing the dashboard, wheelbase, suspension, and powertrain with the Ford Escort, the EXP was longer, lower, and more aerodynamic than its five-seat counterpart.
In line with the first-generation Escort, the EXP was produced in a version from 1982 to 1985, undergoing a facelift during the 1985 model year. The model was dropped after the 1988 model year. Although not intended to replace the EXP (as it was originally designed to become the 1989 Ford Mustang), the 1989 Ford Probe would become the next front-wheel drive sports coupe sold by Ford. After the EXP, the next two-seat Ford marketed in North America would be the 2002 Ford Thunderbird. Then in 1998 the Escort of the time was marketed as a ZX2, a nod to the EXP and the XR2 from the 1980s. Although EXPs were sports cars, it was common to remove the rear carpeting to put in rear seats as the floor pans are identical between the 3-door Escorts, Escort GTs, and EXPs, however the lower roof line makes rear seating uncomfortable.
From 1982 to 1983, the EXP was sold by Lincoln-Mercury dealers as the Mercury LN7. The LN7 was distinguished largely by its "bubbleback" hatch, large bumper strips across the doors, "black-out" tail lights, and more slits in the nose clip than those of an EXP. The vehicle, however, was dropped after failing to meet sales expectations.

1982 Ford Escort EXP Specs. - The EXP's uni-body rode on the Escort's 94.2inch (2393 mm) wheelbase, with front-wheel drive, and four-wheel independent suspension from 1970s European Fords. At 50 inches tall and 14 feet long, the EXP was longer, lower, and sportier than the North American Escort. The EXP's wheelbase is also close to the "foxbody" Mustang of the same era differing by less than an inch in length.
Performance wasn't the car's strong suit, however, since the EXP weighed about 200 pounds more than a typical 1980s Escort but carried the same small 1.6 L CVH I4 engine rated at 70 hp (52 kW) and a standard 4-speed IB4 manual transaxle. The engine was specifically developed for the North American market of fuel efficiency while the European models of these engines spun faster and made more power. Originally there were to be two available engine options; 1.3-liter CVH and a 1.6-liter CVH, however the choice was made to only use the larger version. Europe ended up with all the CVH variants while North America only saw the 1.6 and later 1.9-liter CVH engines. Also the suspension is that of European Fords from the 1970s, sharing nearly every part with modifications for FWD applications of North American Escorts. Nevertheless, the March 1981 issue of Car and Driver reported that their EXP with a manual transmission reached 44 MPG on the highway, a figure comparable to modern hybrid cars.

I had a pale blue EXP with the sunroof. I lived on the north shore of Oahu Hawaii, the center of the universe for surfing. I bought mine from the local gas station repair shop at Sunset Beach (John was the guy and a perfectly honest man). He had bought it as non driveable and then replaced the head gasket to make it good. This car was the gas mileage champion and with my daily commute to Campbell industrial park, John was astounded at how little gas I purchased in a week. Wayne, my landlord and car buddy, was amazed that I could get twice the brake pad life than he did. When I got mine, the paint looked really oxidized and scored from the tropical sun. I asked my car buddy Wayne about it and he directed me to compound stuff. After a little trial it was obvious that this deeply scored and oxidised paint was not going to get better with compound any time soon so I busted out the Comet cleanser and the green 3M scouring pads. That car went from a frosty looking pale blue to like three or four shades deeper in colour and Wayne was freaking out while I was doing that. It came out looking great and I had a lot of fun driving that car.

I had this EXP with the "frog lights" for the same reason as my first car (mom didn't want me with too many friends. Little did she know I stuck them in the hatchback). Mine was an automatic with a moon roof. It was silver. And it did 0-60 in about 15 minutes.

I lived in mine going to Grateful Dead Shows, same color and all. I'd use the sunroof to exhale weed smoke as I drove down the road! The only issues it had was the turn signal switch would go out, and the heater core was bypassed. The maplight on the ceiling with map pouches on the doors were great for a Rand NcNally... My wife had a black '87, her mother had a white '87. I prefer the "frogeye" version like this one to the bland Escort front end. I'd love to buy one and drop the 2.0 SPI engine in it since it's a more refined and powerful version of the 1.6.

I had the same EXP displayed in this video. I was the 2nd owner when I got it and it had a cheap black paint job that begun to peel away showing areas of its original light blue color. I had plenty of fun driving it around the streets of New York City till I snapped the timing belt downshifting while going uphill...because it didn't have any horsepower whatsoever. Lol!!! I learned to drive stick shift for sure, even shifting without using the clutch. Was my way to impress the girls at the time. I also remember getting into fourth gear would require rubbing my passenger's butt...lol (was nice when I had girls in the car but not when it was a dude lol). And driving a small car like this was made it easy fitting into tight parking spaces as finding parking at all in my old neighborhood was and I'm sure still impossible. Well that's my story I just wanted to share...I had plenty of fun with my little, no horsepower little EXP. Thanks for posting this video....brought back lots of memories. Ed Ramos

I had an 84. Had a custom paint job, had a bubble hatch (like the 85, and newer). Don't know if that is stock. Had the mustang steering wheel, and the car pic with lights. They light up telling which door was open, washer fluid low, and which lights are out. People say they are junk, but mine was reliable. Ford tries to replace the V8-powered rear-drive Mustang with the Probe. Loyal 'Stang fans don't buy this early news of it and write a barrage of letters to the manufacturer urging them to keep their beloved ponycar intact. Ford listens to them, but the development of what became the Probe was too far long for it to be canceled, so what next? Ford then looks at the sales numbers for the Escort-based EXP novelty two-door/two-seat front-drive sports coupe, and realizes they could cancel that one out instead.
