FORD EXP : WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT?

Based off the Ford Escort, the EXP was a compact two-seater which was the first one offered in 25 years. The mechanicals of the Ford EXP were identical to that of the Escort, but had a longer, more aerodynamic body. The Ford EXP was first introduced at the Chicago Auto Show, and introduced in early 1981 as a 1982 EXP model vehicle.
The EXP's rakish non-boxy body rode on the Escort's 94.2 inch wheelbase, with that car's front-wheel drive running gear, four-wheel independent suspension, and dashboard. The EXP was longer, lower, and sportier than the Escort.

My best friend in high school had a first-gen EXP. It was a fun little car. He used the space created by eliminating the back seat to put a box frame that held some big booming speakers. It was perfect when playing 80s hair metal bands on the tape deck. It did have a weird quirk though. On cold days when he would run the front defroster, it smelled like maple syrup. We joked that Ford had a secret deal with IHOP as we craved pancakes when that odor hit. So I have fond memories of the EXP and never considered it an ugly car.

I had a 1982 Black EXP with a black and white interior. It was a 4 spd with the 1.6 liter engine. No, it's performance was a little (lot) less than exhilarating but it really handled very well. I think a lot of that was due to the manual steering. I still remain very fond of those but think Ford really dropped the ball on it. Had they built it rear drive and a limited production of SVO 2.3 liter versions, they'd have had a vehicle that would still be sought after as a true classic even today. I ended up trading the car for a repair on my 1972 Gran Torino. Now THAT was a whole different car. If I could only go back to being 19 again in the late 80's. Thanks for featuring this car. Great nostalgia... how I wish Ford had done more with it!

As a young driver in the 1980's neither the EXP nor the Probe had any appeal to but new 1994 Mustang was a car I wanted from the start. Unfortunately most Ford dealers I went to didn't have any new Mustangs on their lots in 1994 so I settled for a new Mercury Cougar instead. But I eventually got a Mustang In 1998 and another Mustang in 2004.

I would've held out for a Honda Civic CRX instead. Ford was sort of desperate during these years before they hit big/better with the 9th Gen ('83) Thunderbird redesign and then out of the (sales) park with the all-new Taurus in '86. Japan did/has/and still does own the economy/sport economy segments. They've earned it imo.

Aw, I always thought the EXP was a lot better-looking than the Escort. Sure, it was sluggish as an Escort, too; but at least it looked better. I always liked the look of it, although I'm more of a big-car man (and yes, I mean CARS, not trucks, unless we're talking Kenworths). It's better to uptick the styling of an already-small car than it is to try and style a big car like a small one...like Cadillac did, first with a gussied-up Cavalier (err, "Cimarron"), then with their mainstream models. No wonder Lincoln came up with the "Valet" series of commercials; by '85 even Fleetwoods looked like Celebrity models with fancier grilles.

Except for that original improvised cost saving body side molding GM put on it. The car deserved it's own unique door handles. GM used the body side molding as an attempt to camouflage the generic Pontiac T1000 door handles they used on all their cars. I agree the car was gorgeous to look at and the fastback model introduced in 1986 was hot. You'll notice I left off intentionally mentioning anything about the Fiero engines. Obviously for good reason but there's no point in getting into that. GM was too cheap to make the proper investment in this car until it was ultimately too late.

The EXP was a very decent little car for the time period. It was cetainly better than Pontiac's Fiero and arguably very unique in the two seater market. The public viewed it as just an Escort all dressed up with nowhere to go. In my humble opinion, Ford's only mistake was powering it with the same 1.6 liter engine as the base model Escort. They could have offered the Turbo as standard equipment along with a front stabilizer bar. Those two offerings as standard equipment on a car that was aerodynamically sound but heavier vehicle than the base model would have really put it on par with the Toyota MR2 and Mazda RX7. Ford blew it with their penny pinching.

Also reminds me a lot of that abomination known as the 'Fox Body Mustang' (in reality the Fairmont coupe/convertible). Not bad, but NOT a Mustang. However, I always liked the EXP/LN7. Almost bought an EXP back in the early eighties, but the local dealer was too greedy and wasn't willing to deal, they just wanted to rip off a twenty something kid. Being a Ford they were naturally going to be nothing but trouble (not unlike a Mustang if you tried to leave one stock, that's why so many were souped up - they had to be, just to get them to run!) but I liked them anyway, just not enough to overpay especially knowing it was going to have a short life. Even as a kid I knew better than that, so I bought something else. Looking back it was a very wise decision in the long run, but I still thought they were pretty neat for what they were. Like my Dad and my uncles always told me - stay away from number three!

I didn't think 🤔 that the EXP was ugly, but I did think 🤔 that the Probe was a sleek, beautiful small car by Ford! The only FORD that I ever bought was a used 1984 Mercury Lynx Wagon!!! I bought it in 1989 for $1,200 Cash!!! I liked it but it died after about 2 years and that was THE LAST Ford I ever had. Ford makes some nice looking vehicles. But reliable? Fixed or repaired daily to Found on road Dead?!!? Ford always said that they have a better idea, but seeing what my fiancee goes through with her 2021 Edge?!!? I'll keep my GMC Terrain!!!

@@ThisOldCarChannel Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too! Thank you. I don't subscribe to very much, but quite a bit of content appeals to me. Still, I am basically a Private Person for the most part, so when I find something that really interests me, like Tarantulas, Scorpions, Wolves or Sharks; or the different aspects of life as I grew up during the 60s and 70s, I tend to pay attention to it. Still, I will keep that in mind! Some of the automobiles that I liked were the Plymouth Fury III (67-68) Oldsmobile Cutlass (74)

The last series looks fine except for the Escort head lamps. It would look better with a Mustang SVO inspired headlamps. Oh the name is bad... EXP simply expired.

When Ford go rid of the bug lights on the EXP this resulted in the front of this car pretty much looking like all Ford models including the muscle car Mustang or the lowly Tempo. The EXP tried to be the poor mans version of the Mustang. It failed miserably. The Probe was the logical replacement and the hidden headlights and truly aerodynamic body style set it clearly apart from it's Mazda counterpart the MX-6. Mazda mechanical reliability helped to sell the car at first but the unreliable Ford body hardware ultimately did it in.

Probe was irrelevant to EXP, with mercury Capri convertible it's obvious replacement. Preceeding 2.0 mustang II, Scirroco, early Prelude, CRX & Fiero better reference.

They looked okay, but why bother? Those days I bought a datsun 720 pickup, which probably drove similar, and lasted 165,000 tough miles. That would be the last nissan product I would ever own.
