If I remember correctly they were F2 engines. And the fixed cylinder liners were so thin they were virtually transparent. But then it was originally a 1600 cc cylinder block :-O

I was lucky enough to go to saloon car races in the 1970s when the BDA Escorts raced against muscle cars like Ford Mustangs and Chevrolet Camaros. The big American cars thundered off into the distance on the straights, but the Escorts caught up with them around the corners because of their superior handling. According to my 1973 documentation a 1973 to 1997 cc Cosworth BDA engine. DOHC 16 valve. Between 250 and 280 BHP at around 9000 rpm dependent on the tuner. They were F2 spec engines but some cast iron and some aluminum. The story was that from 1971 F2 allowed for 2000 cc so all 1600 were bored to 2000 cc. For the BDA which cylinder block originated from the old 1000 cc Anglia that was a bit of a problem so the standard Cosworth was 1973 cc. Later Hart and Zakspeed managed to squeeze 1997 cc from the shell thin cylinder liners. In 1973 Cosworth relased an all aluminum block but apparently the max capacity remained 1997 cc.
