Hello, i followed your video to replace my bearing, however when ever i put it in reverse there is a growl whining sound, also when i put it on drive, but not as loud as in reverse, also it has a vibration at around 50 mph, i removed the drive shaft going to the rear tires but it still does it, its on a 2003 ford escape xlt awd thanks

Yeh most of the vehicles life was in Iowa and the DOT does like their salt. It also use to sit a lot because I would travel for work. You're right about the axl, I don't think it was pushed all the way in. Can you push it in far enough so it disengages the inner race of the bearing? I pried the axl back with a screw driver. I can push the axl back with the bearing puller attachment now.

I was changing out my lower front ball joint on my 02 explorer eddie bauer edition when upon torquing the castle nut, it never reached torque and the threads stripped. I was able to snug it up and insert the pin into the hole. Is this ok or should I just buy a new ball joint and replace it. I was torquing it to 120 ft lbs. I got that number from an internet forum.

yes all the specs are the same 85lb ft for the caliper bracket bolts and hub bolts and 184 lb ft for the axle nut.

I have a question I have a 2004 Ford Explorer. It is making the growling noise. I would like to know can I just replace the bearings (I found front bearings at advance auto) or do I need to replace both the hub and bearings. The reason I asked is because it seems like for this model every one is replacing the hub as well. I don't want to do that if I don't have to. Thank you so much

Got a question mine feels like it’s locking up the driver side wheel or grinding like teeth grinding, then traction control flashes goes away then I can drive slowly again .it has 4x4 acts like this in 4x4 and 2wd and there was a ABS light on as well . Any advice ? Would Abs light lock up grind the driver wheel ? It’s snowing here as well.wondering what you would change or cane across something like this before ?

have you jacked up the truck and check the wheels for play as described in the begining of the video? I would check all 4. Noise travels through the drivtrain and some rear noises and come through in the front. Also just because it feels like its right below your feet and thing must be left front bearing, isnt always true more times than not that vibe and noise you swear is in the left front is actually in right front. I've seen it too many times.

Most definitely not. I would suspect the rear end is at fault, pinion bearings and gear damage is how it sounds to me. Wierd that it goes away for awhile though. Only thing that howls is the rear end gears though. It may sound like its underneath you or coming from the front. What if you let off the throttle does it stop, or change pitch etc?

Good Video What would you guess the growling noise, you feel it up the steering column, would be from a 4x4 2007 Sport Trac when the all wheel drive engages the front drive a bit. There are 4 new tires on the truck !!! I think it may be the front bearings. This only happens after the truck runs a bit on the road and gets warm.

Hi , i have a 2003 ford explorer that has a proble when shifting from reverse to drive and drive to reverse. Mostly it makes a loud noise and if you don't put your leg on the break you will feel like the vehicle kicking and going forward. I have taken it to a mechanic and they said it was. differential. i had the transmission rebuilt and rear differential replaced. The noise and kicking noise still can be heard when shifting from drive to reverse and vise versa. I have seen your video when you reset ford explorer pcm. Did you remember what you replaced on that vehicle. If you know anything let me know.

prefect instructional video no bullshit about your wife & kids (I'm sure they're lovely they just don't have any relivance or added value to my explorer wheel hub replacement) & all the prefessional details that are so often lacking in even the best "right to the point" mecanical instruction videos. It seems quite hard to find instructional videos made by ASE certified mechanics with access to all data (I'm only assuming but clearly your no backyard hack mechanic like myself). so thank you very much for sharing the knolage you have worked hard to learn with the broke & ballsy losers like me that can't afford to pay anyone who really knows what they are doing like you but has the balls to try anything at least a few times.

How does this work having a 2wd running 4wd bearings? I'm trying to see if I can convert my 4wd ford ranger to 2wd. Everything you read says you can't run 4wd bearings without the preload from the cv axle bolt. This factory set up flies in the face of everything you read on forums. So whats the deal here?

Cool man.Also, I had to rent a slide hammer to get it out. It was corroded pretty bad where the bearing sits. So depending on the severity it might not come out as easily.What grit # do you use to remove the corrosion? I was using 220 grit sand paper to clean up the area. Also the 3 bolts used to hold it in place were a s.o.b. too. I had to use an offset wrench and a breaker bar to get 2 of 3 out. Man this thing kicked my ass today! Thanks for your help.

If the noise is in the front then the bearings are at fault.

Wow you must live in a corrosion state too huh? No need for a slide hammer a 3lb sledge works everytime, mine was just pre loosened for the video it was actually really in there. We use roloc sanding disc. I would say to use around 100 grit. You had the axle pushed back and in so you could get to the bolts easier right?

Just replaced passenger side hub/bearing on a 2002 4x4 Explorer XLT using the recommended Motorcraft bearing. The video was excellent,but I noticed when the hub was removed, it had a grease seal snugly fit on the inboard side - contacting the outboard end of the half-shaft. I didn't see one in the removed or installed one in your video. I swapped out the one bearing, trying to quiet a loud groan/whine at highway speeds when there is slight pressure in a right turn. Steering straight away or in a left turn does not cause the noise. Noise is most notable at 60+mph. Any recommendations? Proceed with replacement of the left hub? Halfshafts?

Would my 04 F350 be making a metallic popping noise if my wheel bearings were out? The sound only comes from the front driver side. The sound only gets worse when I drive faster. I have taken off my tire, brake system and hub cover and have been having trouble taking off the 4 bolts near the universal joint but am wondering if its even the wheel bearings.. When I turn it on a stand I don't hear any major noise but when its rolling down the road it sounds terrible

Lots of miles on it? Plow truck? A bearing will make a roaring or humming noise. Hub and bearings are not that common on the superduty but I have changed a few. You wont be able to feel it turning by hand. When turning by hand there should be no roughness, should be smooth as silk.

my first 4x4 i got a good deal on a 1994 explorer when i turn the wheel it moans and groans and sqeaks real bad and if im applying the brake at the same time its even worse i have a slight pull to the right. Im guessing ball joints and tie rod ends. also the 4x4 light is on if i push it it dims a little bot comes back on im not sure if its in or out of 4 wheel drive. this is a good running truck high miles but reasonably taken care of wouldnt mind keeping it but im in need of a litttle help will i be able to work on it?? any advice is appreciated
@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco 10 жыл бұрын
It is not a power steering groan more of a dry metal? Ball joints thjat groan and sqeak are real common on these the lowers that is where as the upper just loosen. I have replace a few tie rod ends for sqeaks on these too. I would get in there and check out what is worn or sqeaking replace those items and then go from there with the 4x4 and pull to the right. Those are very easy to work on so you should be able to tackle it. You live in the rust belt?

I have an 02 Mountaineer V8 AWD. When ever I turn left or right at low to medium speeds, the car makes a grinding/jerking noise/sensation and the tires squeal even at very low speed. If I'm coasting slowly and turn my wheel to get into a parking spot, the car will actually stop since the momentum from the turning can't over come what ever is binding it up. I've had my front dif replaced, replaced my front drive shaft, and just had my rear dif rebuilt and rear hubs replaced. Do you have any idea what it could be? One mechanic said it was my front drive shaft, when he removed my old, the problem was still there but barely noticeable, once I put in the new drive shaft, problem came right back. So I'm assuming its not the drive shaft. I was told it may be the ball joints or CV Axle.

With a sealed bearing like that shouldn't there be something holding the bearing together... when I blew up the front diff on my daily k2500. I was told to break down the cv shaft and put the stub thru the hub and torque it to spec because the bearing could split and lose a wheel while I had the diff on the bench. Normally a dead ifs axle would have a taper roller bearing not a sealed one.

You really need to take a look at your front axle u joints then. Take wheel off, lock hubs manually, turn the steering wheel left or right all the way. Then grab the hub and turn it round and round should be smooth no binding. Also if you think its a bearing noise and its coming from the left front still check the right front. The way the noise telegraphs you will swear on your life it was left front and it is right front. I have seen it more times than I can count.

Yes you are the first one who caught that. I was already in process of removal when the video started. Have you ever had a wheel so stuck on from corrosion that it feels as though the lug nuts are still on and you need to beat it off? The explorers are known for heavy wheel corrosion at the hub and that was the case on this one. So there was no need to put the lugs back on for the video.

Explorers have some weird stuff with them when these things start to go, and it can be hard to tell which bearing it is, particularly after hearing all your friends theories about it being drive train, transfer case (4x4), etc. As soon as I find the torque for the hub nut, I'm going to see if I'm done with mine. Wife should be happy if that elusive whining noise is gone (hopefully). Had it even when steering wheel was even slightly in right direction, like changing lanes. Thanks

I was not going to reinstall all lug nuts just to show it when the rust bond around the hub center pilot was holding the wheel already. When they rust this bad you must whack the back side of the rim with a rubber mallet to break it free. While you are back there beating on the rim to free it you don’t want it flying off and bouncing across the shop so you put one lug nut back on just a few threads loose. Now do you understand?

Your TV is long horizontally, why would you record with your phone long vertically. Turn it for a FAR better result.

nope this is the rust belt the wheels seize to the rotor face. You literally need to beat them off from the backside to separate.
