In this video we have a look at a Ford Explorer Sport Trac that was dragged in with a crank, no start. It is obvious this truck has been having a problem for longer than just a week once we "see" what the problem is! The infamous 4.0 crank pulley (harmonic balancer) separation that takes out the crank shaft sensor. We also get to take a little trip to the Auto Zone! -Enjoy!

Eric re:worry about the radiator. 65 years ago, I hated busting my knuckles on the steel fins. So I just use a 6mm or 1/4" peice of plexiglass or 1/4" plywood and put in between the radiator and my work area. Helped preventing tools puncturing the radiator too.

Tried getting a job at Autozone once. I interviewed with the assistant manager and he seemed visibly threatened by my experience working in an actual shop, since he told me he never so much worked at a quick oil change joint. So, I didn't get hired. No biggie. A few weeks later I went in to pick up some sway bar links that I had set aside and I found that the kid that they hired instead of me was the one "helping me". He didn't even know what sway bar links were and insisted that no such thing exists and it turned into a 15 minute fiasco with the assistant manager that hired this idiot over me just to get some damn bushings that were literally sitting in a box on the back counter. What a joke. A few years late commenting on this vid but hey I hope you get a good laugh out of my struggles 😂

The real tip here is not the head fake by the harmonic balancer. It is that you made those threaded rods at various lengths with the one end squared off (for the socket?) and you knew they could help get that puller working. Awesome insight and ingenuity. ( A trick from meemaw? ). Great video Eric.

Eric you have taught me a lot and it’s appreciated! Back in the day I did all of my own auto repairs because I couldn’t afford not to but cars were a lot simpler back when. No internet then so the library was my source for info. Now I do some but not all of my own repairs. I got a job at Kragen (a.k.a Kragen/Checker/Schucks, which is now O'reilly) back when I was a teenager and you had to answer multiple choice questions on a computer when you were applying, stuff like "if the customer said they had water on the passenger side floor board what could be the issue". I'm sure at autozone its probably more or less the same thing the but the answer for all questions is "replace the O2 sensor".

Gotta know more than they do, and lookup the parts and get the part numbers you need and give them when you walk in, otherwise you'll end up with the wrong parts. I found it odd when they gave me my cap/rotor for my Jeep along with 8 spark plugs...turns out they looked up a Grand Cherokee with the V8 not the I6...didn't really think anything of it, the cap was right, the rotor apparently not so much, I was about 60 miles from home when that rotor decided to disintegrate, luckily right at the freeway exit I was getting off at.

You asked what it takes to get a job at Auto Zone, well I can tell you because I just started a 2nd job there earlier this month so that I can pay my wife's & daughter's doctor bills thanks to Obamacare. I have no auto experience other that working on my own & friends cars since I was a teenager. You are spot on when you mentioned the check box for a pause. AZ is hard up for workers because they currently have over 10,000 job openings in the US. When you called AZ they should have taken your number so that they could put the part on hold for you. If they gave you a hard time about the tax exempt claim then they most likely were a DIY store & not a commercial store. The commercial stores are the ones that handle selling to the local shops. I work at a DIY only store so I deal with idiot customers most of the time & 98.5% of the time they buy the Dorman or Valuecrap branded parts.

I bought a set of valuecrap spark plug wires for my truck the other day...why? Because the over-priced set was garbage, intermittent no-spark on random cylinders and after jiggling around the plug wires it would work fine for a bit then start missing again...brand new engine and wasn't running on all 6 cylinders again...out came the ole brain and said well its gotta be the plug wires since when you move the wires around it starts missing/hitting. So to the parts store I went for the $20 plug wire set, 10 minutes problem solved. Just because you pay more doesn't necessarily mean you get a better product sometimes. I know that's often not the case but seems to be with already over-priced re-manufactured junk parts from these parts stores. I seem to have better luck pulling parts off vehicles at the Pick A Part lots HAHA!!.

Eric, a man is humbled when they can move onward by admitting his mistakes. I was a field mechanic n not much on automotive experience. I have since had to retire due to back problems. But I enjoy watching your videos n learn something evertime. I have 70k into tools, n I honestly miss the cleaner jobs of my past. Look, listen, n think n take action imho. Always go with the basics before you go into fault codes n diagnostic charts n codes. Cat is the toughest critter on the planet, due to their lack of sharing knowledge n procedures for field mechanics. A guy works hard enough to stay up with technology. With all the changes at 1000 mph today it's discouraging allot of guys to pursue a career in heavy equipment let alone automotive. Yet, they'll never develop a robot to turn wrenches all day n slip n crawl around D11s everyday. If I had to do over, I would have gotten in VW, Volvo, Land Rover ect,,, It would have made life allot easier in my opinion. Keep doing your videos dude, I really enjoy learning still n laughing along with ya. Ty

It's one thing to make a mistake. It's another to just not give a rip about your work. Eric O makes mistakes, and owns them. The "Zone" guys just don't give a rip. Don't know which you are writing about, so I thought I'd just cover them both. Or maybe you meant something completely different?

Autozone is the place when everything else is closed & you "might" find the part at twice the cost. This happened to my Ranger; belt squeaking, changed pulleys, tensioners, and a bad alternator and squeak continued. Not until I got under the truck and inspected the harmonic balancer and found what appeared to be a "two" pully system. Sure enough I was dumbfounded when I took it off and looked similar to one on your video. It's a miracle that that belt did not come off and tangle itself on the fan. Good video and thanks for sharing.

Thanks for showing that you are a normal human too. I had a very similar whoopsie the other day, car came in for a roadworthy found A/C belt shredded and a rub mark on timing cover. I did not think about it just told him to come back for some new belts, fitted the belts started up and knock knock goes the 2 piece balancer, DOH. Subaru told him about the balancer at last service.......

@@nydeerhunter5166 Eric seems to be able to go directly to the problem every time using common since. I don't trust any of my local repair shops, especially the dealer. I wish every city/town had a specialist like Eric that has common sense and you know your diagnostic fees are worth every penny. 99% of repair shops are ignorant crooks.
