For those who find themselves towing trailers on a semi-regular basis, the go-to choice is often a light-duty full-size pickup truck, and until recently, buyers could only choose between gas and diesel power. Enter the all-new, all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning, a vehicle that promises to shake up the truck market as we know it. We already know the F-150 Lightning is a capable truck with a fairly long electric range, but how does it fare on a road trip when saddled with a trailer loaded with thousands of pounds of Tesla Model 3? We grabbed a few of the Lightning’s gasoline- and diesel-powered competitors, plus a hybrid F-150, to see how the experience of towing in an electric truck compares to that of more conventionally powered rigs. Will the Lightning’s range be completely abysmal? How many times will it have to charge and for how long? We’ll answer all these questions and more in our Ultimate Truck Towing Comparison Test!

Tank you for this comparison test.. we really need to consider who in the right mind tow daily more than 300 miles really ? (not to mention Europe.. ) Truckers might be the right answer, and even for those Tesla will have the full electric Semi-truck,along with other brands Daimler-Mercedes e-Cascadia Freightliner, Volvo e-truck, MAN, DAF, Bollinger and other brands will be available very soon to tow & carry up to 21 tones of payload up to 500 miles.. So for the rest of people these full electric pick-ups cover more than daily basics needs and most importantly do not pollute in full use even towing and they can regen charging the battery specially in tow that can be very good thing to be exploited specially going down on longer trips .. If some people really need to get on the other side of country why not consider trains, airlines flying-jets ?.. also i watched TFL from US saying that F150-e Lightning tested was the first edition fully loaded with all bangs & whistles the most expensive trim but it can also be ordered to be more affordable in lower trims for example with a single electric motor on rear axle that it will be also lighter than the dual motor- AWD version which for such heavy pick-up EV that aspect is important would instantly translated in longer distance trips travelled between charging points.. so yeah if we also consider that for EV would not be pay any pollution taxes that are recently added for ice vehicles, also the govern support to help people to get a green full EV vehicle there are ways to sort things out for each customer budgets & needs and consider BEV as viable solution on long term ..

Possibly one of the most thorough comparison tests. Thanks Edmund! It opens our eyes to the pro and cons of the EV option. No doubt there are pro: silence, torque, range; but I cringed when he was checking the dash for "where can I recharge". The summary is spot-on: for familiar route use, it's a viable option; for unfamiliar routes, it's too stressful. Take a way the charging infra concern and the game would be changed.

The F150 Lightning is a solid -1. The vehicle has everything to do with the added time incurred on the trip as it's an EV, not a conventional ICE. The infrastructure is secondary as the test proved the same. Driving 55MPH when the national speed limit is 70 to give the EV a bit more range isn't realistic and of course the price is simply dumb.

We tow and haul a decent amount in our older F150. Would love something more efficient, but for now I think we'll look to the hybrid F150 next. The electric does seem like a good proposition if all charging was perfect. For mass adoption you will not succeed until charging your electric truck is as quick as filling the tank.

This was a great video. The charging infrastructure is the biggest drawback at the moment. Hopefully in about 5 years or so, they can partially catch up with the number of gas stations available. Until that time, it's useless to take any type of trip with an electric vehicle. Not to mention spending $30k more for the vehicle.

No pollution taxes are applied for ice cars in US - yet ? (in Europe traffic Comission are recently added slowly to be applied in all countries and payed along with highway road taxations).. Another weird fact these tests are just for exemplification and pushed by auto-journalists to the extreme, but in real life daily use, who really tow daily on such long distances with heavy big trails ( except the truck-workers, farmers or companies with heavy-duty equipments ) many recent reports from US show that on last 10 years, 95% of pick-up truck owners do not tow more than 10.000 lbs less than 4 times per year on average 300 miles distances trips, less than 70% pick-up owners go with them off-road.. So let's say they really need hawling lots of goods & stuff to cover the main case, but then are better solutions available to order right now like : Tesla Semi-Truck along with other brands that build full electric semi-trucks for different purposes and in different sizes capable to tow big heavy duty trailers like: Daimler-Mercedes e-Cascadia Freightliner, Volvo e-truck, MAN, DAF, Bollinger and other brands will be available very soon (in 1-2 years maximum) to tow & carry up to 21 tones of payload up to 500 miles.. so honestly i really wonder is this a new thing to bring down EV's just like they did in the past with GM-EV1 case ?!!!..

I enjoyed this test and video. Happy to see the Diesel end up on top. Also, while long distance towing isn’t the Lightning’s purpose, it still performed pretty well. Good for pointing out that if you live a few miles away from a lake and want to tow your boat there, a Lightning would work just fine. I feel like a lot of internet comments fail to recognize this. That’s what most 1/2 ton truck buyers do anyways. We’re still in the early stages of EV technology so it will be an interesting future. Thanks Edmunds.

Being in the UK, none of these vehicles is ever going to be on my radar, as such...! However, I found the number-crunch comparison table (at 23:19 in) really interesting, purely from the viewpoint of how towing affects the regular mpg, irrespective of the engine. Silverado aside (I'm mean... come on... it's starting from a VERY low mpg baseline...!!) I found it encouraging that the F-150 Lightning only lost the same 26.7% reduction in expected efficiency compared to the RAM diesel. There are plenty of pessimists out there, screaming that "towing with halve an EV's range...!" but your test proves that not to be the case - in fact, better still, it's no worse than the 'best' towing vehicle, the diesel, achieves. Sure, the ridiculous "charger roulette" that you experienced is an absolute pain in the butt - as is the difficulty in trying to park up to the charger with a trailer in tow - but these are things that will (🤞) only get better over time... After all, for the first 20 or so years people were driving petrol cars, they had to go fill up a jerry can at a local chemist...!! 🤣

You're looking through rose colored glasses. With a boxier tow object and speed at normal, which is not 55mph, the BEV would fair much worse. That along with the charging challenges mean unless it's short tow with charging at home sufficient, it's a no go. However for short tows and charging at home, sure, great! All depends on the use case.

Excellent video. I am arousing some curiosity with the electric pick-ups (pick-ups is the largest market in America than any parts in the world) so California's mandates that only be emission-free vehicles would be sold by 2035 would worry so many drivers . Many carry out activities towing their campers and that must be taken into account by vehicle and battery manufacturers, I understand that there's still room for improvement before 2035, but they have to give it the same or better than what their combustion counterparts do , they should prioritize energy density on the batteries. I know in the car market, the EVs have catched up the ICE vehicles, but they have to improve in trucks before 2035.

okay so based on my knowledge of each drivetrain, once distance is factored in, I'm guessing the order is the following 1. Diesel - with long range and minimal performance hindrance, this is the engine configuration practically made for towing. 2. gas - while performance takes a much bigger hit, and the fuel economy wasn't brilliant, it still has the a decent range an recharge time. 3. hybrid - because the hybrid battery is so small, it couldn't really provide an extra performance. resulting in what is effectively a gas truck with a bit of extra deadweight on board. fuel economy will most likely be a dead heat with the gas engine truck, maybe even with the hybrid getting worse fuel economy 4. electric - like a body builder running a marathon, it really shows it's strength early on, then quickly runs out of breath and needs a break. btw - if a FCEV pickup ever gets built, and one can swallow the price, it should combine the pluses of the electric with the pluses of the diesel. now that will be something to see.

The EV's trucks are not ready for long distance towing at this point but it was astonishing how much time he wasted while stopped without the truck being in a state of charge. The 50 minutes charging should not have put him 4 hours behind the lead group. He could have made only 1stop (not 2) on the initial slow charger and still came in 2-3 hours sooner. That said higher speeds and larger trailers would have favored the ICE trucks even more as far as range is concerned.

I would have preferred to see the GM with the baby 3.0 diesel. The Ram is going by the wayside so testing this was a non factor IMO. GMs 3.0 diesel is a true power house and I am a F150 ecoboost fan and daily driver. If I were to tow say under 8k regularly I’d opt for either the GM (diesel) or the ecoboost/power boost. @@Arthagnou People were saying 2 years ago that an electric truck wasn't even possible, yet here we are. As far as the grid, no one expects every American to purchase an EV right away especially as the length of ownership of vehicles has increased. If you're so worried about the grid, I'm sure you're happy that the Inflation Reduction Act specifically earmarks monies to modernize the American power grid system. Also, the only folks who say EVs are boring haven't driven the new crop of EVs that run circles around the performance of their ICE counterparts. Furthermore, MOST people drive "boring" cars. It is such an interesting take, to me.

No denying the infrastructure shortcomings. For my purposes I could probably squeak by owning a Lightning if road-trip charging was stable but that may take another few years before it’s truly able to do that.

Funny they call the electric over priced truck the future... The electric truck is garbage. Towing it is no good. Have fun sitting at a charging station.. The future looks pathetic if you have to sit for an hour to charge when I can fill up in 5 minutes with a gas or diesel truck. The future is having to worry about where to find a fast charger and if it works or not. Jeezus... what a painful evolution... no thanks...

My new Sand metallic ZR2 will be here in 2 weeks. They can stick that Lighting where the sun don't shine. Completely useless for towing especially here in Canada in the winter. Just imagine sitting at a charging station in January when it's minus 30 outside and the wind is blowing. No thanks. Power boost would be my Ford 1/2 ton choice. Have an 2015 F350 diesel for real towing when needed. The Ram Eco is Ok too but had a bad experience with a Jeep ECO diesel so I'll pass on that one. EV and towing is a joke.

Really liked this video. I have a couple of comments/questions. Did the fuel cost on Ram include the DEF used? Should have been around $0.91 cents @ 50:1. Diesel used 12.21 gallons? (215/17.6) = cost about $70. In the east, Diesel fuel tends to be about 10-15% higher cost. That, added to DEF at 2% more to fuel consumption (about .004 per mile) eats away at diesel benefit. The increased diesel costs in maintenance over ICE and electric options AND being not as dependable as they once were with the HP fuel pumps, etc. and nearly all benefit is erased. Vehicle costs are another consideration. The diesel, now discontinued and the Hybrid are about the same cost with the Lightning about $30K more unless you buy base ($70-100K). I calculated what the costs would be currently for these vehicles on my area based on your consumption rates. I did this because California is like their own country with their extreme fuel rates: Lightning $22.00, Hybrid $32.00, Ram $33.00 w/DEF .91, Silverado $61.34 Thanks for this excellent video.

In my view, the Lightning did okay. It clearly is not a heavy towing vehicle. But I really don’t think that is what it was designed for. The vast majority of pickup owners (me included) use our trucks to make transporting stuff to and from our homes easier. It is perfect for that. My cost of electricity is about 11 cents per KwH. I have an EV (not a Lightning) on its way to my local dealer right now. I can charge its battery completely full for about $8.50 and drive for just a bit less than 300 miles. The Lightning is similar, relatively speaking. No one vehicle meets all needs and a diesel heavy tow truck is serious overkill for the vast majority of non-commercial use cases. And it comes with seriously high operating expenses all the time. No thanks, I will take the EV for my use cases.

Too bad the the very best towing vehicle, the RAM diesel, is headed out of production this year to make room for more EVs in their product portfolio. Manufacturers are getting ahead of themselves in canceling what works best to make room for new tech that is frankly not ready for mainstream applications like towing. Let’s chat about EV adoption in 5 years and I think we will see an underwhelming growth curve of mainstream buyers.

@@prerunnerwannabe The ban is being introduced in phases that start in 2026 and ending it 2035. This means the market will begin shifts long before the 2035 deadline. Also, it's not just California. There's about dozen or more states that follow CA emission laws. Also, you cannot just buy from another state that sells ICE. To register any vehicle in CA, the car must be CA compliant, which many vehicles sold in other states are not. What's more, wherever the bans are in effect, these bans impact the entire NA market, as there will be diseconomies created by the bans. Prices will rise, servicing and maintenance will become harder to do, selection will become more limited. This will not just impact CA. You already see what production slow downs do to the price of vehicles. Imagine what were to happen when states begin total bans.
