2000 Ford F-150 5.4L ... just changed it out. Simple as changing a light bulb. 8mm for the battery and for the Air Control Valve. $45. Dealer wanted $327 to install! Needed a longer flathead screwdriver to reach and unlock the electrical connector. Thanks. Thumbs up. All the F150 forums led me to this fix. Ford mechanics said this is 99% of the problem.

Here are some symptoms of IAC problems on the 5.4 and 4.6 engines. A horn or hum sound at the air breather assembly. A surge idle that goes up and down. I idles too low or idles too high. And yes if you tap those with a hammer sometimes they start acting right. Most of the time you dont have to replace them at all, you take them off and hold the motor side upwards and spray carb cleaner through the top hole until it drains out the bottom hole and reinstall them, as they get carbon between the valve between the two holes

I have an '02 Lincoln Navigator (same thing) but my motor looks a little different and I think the module for mine is right on the top of the motor in the middle. It's idling rough though and I have to two-foot it at stop lights and stop signs. It does not idle rough until it's warmed up though, first 3-5 minutes but after that, it's pretty much every time I have to slow down I two-foot it. Is this what was wrong with yours?

My 2001 e250 5.4l had this problem. Thanks for your help, it's really easy to get at on the van: just remove the engine shroud inside the van and there it is. On the van it's a 5/16 socket, the 8mm is a little loose and gets stuck (jammed) upon tightening. Thanks again for your invaluable info in this video. 100 thumbs up dude!

Thanks for the upload. Your problem is exactly like mine. I have a Ford Expedition. I actually took a old fashion way of fixing it and it was to place a find a place a limiter to not allow the throttle mechanism to drop below a certain level. Set to 700 RPM when the engine is warm. Took about 10 minutes to put in and adjust. Passed a Calif. smog check. The problem is when the engine is cold the engine would really idle low and sometimes die. I live in So. Cal. near the freeway so it not so much of problem. When I have time (LOL) I'll fix it right.. Thanks again.

Fantastic video! I need to do this with my 2000 Expedition. Could you leave the IAC connected when removing and then disconnect the coupler? I have a 2004 expedition, I took it of Ford and for $39.95 they told me that it was my idle air control valve. Ford wanted almost $300 to install the unit. After looking on youtube, it appears to be a relatively easy fix. Most say it takes 10-15 minuets. Amazon sells the valve for $40. Big difference in the pricing here .... the reviews says that these aftermarket parts works fine. your thoughts ...

OK I drive a Ford F-150 2000 Model And my truck has been having some rather weird issues. Its from up north so I had to replace an exaust manifold the other day. BUT She doesn't want to climb hills. she can, if I give her gas she'll rev up and climb no problems, the initial Rev up concerns me. Secondly this started like 3 days ago... I came to a stop light and the Idle would stutter and drop down to about 900-1000 RPM's, Pop it in neutral give it a little gas she's good. Today however she started dying at red-lights. And now she's kind of stuttery while moving at lower RPM's... Would this be a culprit? Or maybe an assist culprit?

I have replaced all of the vacuum hoses except that one, and the fitting back there, which I hear cracks and leaks. Hello. I have a 2001 F-150 5.4L 2V, and it has a rough idle it doesn’t out right die but it seems like I’ve got a misfire, it’ll idle for hours without dying, it also has significantly less power. I hooked it up to an OBD-II, and it coded P0171, I don’t hear any sucking noises, I’ve tried STP concentrated fuel injector cleaner, chased the vacuum lines around I don’t see anything broken. This happened after one of the heater hoses blew off at the fire wall (the quick connector failed at the crimp to the hose). It’s the very same hose in this video, runs from the front of the engine back to the fire wall, it’s 5/8ths heather hose. Now I don’t know what to check.

Is it possible that an O2 sensor can cause a 5.4 in a 2003 Expedition to idle at about 500 RPMs and stall? I replaced the IAC valve (although I might have gotten some copper rtv sealant in it, should I take it off and clean the sealant off completely?) I also replaced the intake manifold and gaskets as well as the PCV valve and vacuum lines. It's beginning to be a pain in my ass.
@nathanwebster5070
@nathanwebster5070 3 жыл бұрын
Your upstream o2 sensor (sensor 1 before the catalytic converter) tells the computer how much fuel is making it through the engine and can affect the amount of fuel the injectors spray into the intake. A dirty mass airflow sensor can also affect this. It tells the computer how much air is coming through and the computer then decides how much fuel it needs to match the incoming air. The idle air control valve is a bypass to your throttle body while your vehicle is idling and your foot is not touching the gas pedal. If it is clogged, or not able to open all the way you can get a lower rpm at idle. I know it’s four years later. I hope it helps explain how some of the components work together.
@SebastianLong
@SebastianLong 3 жыл бұрын
@@nathanwebster5070 I've changed all that as well as the cat itself when I typed that. I changed all 4 o2 sensors, coils, plugs, this and that. The only thing there was left was the wiring harness. Pretty much replaced every sensor that had anything to do with emissions at that point. Eventually the idle stall was cleared up. Was a missing o ring. I still have the vehicle and I am still continuously replacing the coils. I'm going to get another vehicle soon, just have to find the right one. Preferably with about the same interior space. I might get a full sized van because I need the space with the ability to keep the space heated, at least comfortable.
@nathanwebster5070
@nathanwebster5070 3 жыл бұрын
@@SebastianLong the missing O-ring makes sense. A vacuum leak will cause idling issues and bad readings. Sometimes it is best to get a different vehicle all together. I had to do the same thing with a 2005 Ranger. I eventually rebuilt the engine (timing kit) and a bunch of other things. A family member needed a truck. Once they are done with it, I am selling it. That ranger was a thorn in my side since the day I got it. Best of luck to you with your current/new vehicle. I’m sure you have checked this but if your plugs aren’t gapped properly or are fouled and dirty it will cause your coil pack to work harder.

So I have a 2004 f150 and I'm having a problem where my truck idles super low. Luckily I haven't had it stall while I'm on a big road. I would turn the truck on and it would idle fine at about 1000rpm for about 5 minutes then it would would drop and idle at 900 and felt normal. But when I switched into reverse or drive the rooms would go down to about 600rpm and would move up and down slightly. Is it possible that it's this same problem as on your video?

When you disconnect the battery, it erases memory. There might not be codes temporarily until the engine relearns the memory.
@nathanwebster5070
@nathanwebster5070 3 жыл бұрын
While this is true, there are capacitors that hold a charge and will allow the computer to keep the memory for a short period of time. It’s not the same with every vehicle. A couple of hours will clear the codes. To to fifteen minutes shouldn’t clear the memory.

I have a 99 f250 5.4, has been running rough lately and I know my catalytic converter is bad due to rattling inside it, not the heat shield. figured it was the problem til my truck died today when slowing down. it started right back up but unless I drive it or give it gas it dies again and again. could this be my problem also? how do I check to see if the valve is bad ?
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 7 жыл бұрын
Seems possible that this is a bad IAC valve. Try tapping it with a hammer. If it runs after that it's the valve.

The Original Mechanic thanks for responding, I unplugged the MAF sensor and the truck runs and idles but is sometimes rough, mostly at lower rpm. bought a new maf, when I plugged it in, the truck dies again. so I'm guessing unplugging the maf, which put my truck in default mode, bypassed the problem which has to be with another sensor. correct ?

Try cleaning your mass airflow sensor. Remove the sensor completely from the air inlet tube. Don’t touch the small wire like piece in the middle with anything. Only spray it (on both sides) with mass airflow cleaner. Let it dry for about ten minutes and put it back in.

I spent a week researching. Mine always has issues when it gets cold out. But we are talking 20 degrees and lower. Most of the Ford mechanics and DIY guys suggest replacing the fuel pump. And of course you might as well do the fuel filter while you are at it.

sounds like you guys know ford, when i start 2000 5.4l from cold, it starts then stalls out. when i start it back up i have to keep it running using the accelerator pedal. it usually last about 3 to five min or until it warms up a little. like a bad choke.
@TheOriginalMechanic
@TheOriginalMechanic 7 жыл бұрын
That does sound similar a sticking idle air control valve. There are some differences though. Mine would go weeks on end without acting up and then completely fail to keep running. Try tapping it lightly with a hammer next time it acts up. If it then runs, you have your culprit. Good luck!
