My Fiesta failed its MOT today for this same problem,l'm really glad someone posted a video on how to clean and adjust the rear shoes i was going to buy new shoes but an adjustment might be all it needs,l will replace if necessary... always helps to see it done.Thanks

This guy is just helping out, i know it has been a while since you posted but he probably thinks it is not necessary to put anything new on them. Ok i have just recently had my rear shoes done by a mobile mechanic and he made it look easy. if you want to try this yourself at home and know a bit about it here is a tip if one of the drums has seized up completely like mine did then take the inner nut of behind the hub cap b4 raising car then loosen your four bolts slightly but leave tyre on raise car then try loosening the drum while tyre is still on by pulling and stuff at the tyre it should loosen it slightly then its a case of gently prizing it off.

Nice vid, clear steady cam, good info. Great to see Anti sieze Compound being used Torque settings needed mentioning. Also a little tip is...if the drum is stuck due to shoes...they can be backed off via (the pawl & ratchet adjuster and small screwdriver) through a little hole in the backplate! If this little tip is not used, in bad cases even using the puller will damage the components on the backplate.

There is no hole in the back plate for this car.

If you don't have a hub puller you can put the wheel back on and put two of the nuts back on and pull on the wheel for leverage.

Shouldn’t the adjusters adjust themselves if they’re working properly??

I changed the shoes on my partners Focus 2003. couldn't get the adjustment right…failed a basic practice of reaming/removing the lip of the edge. If you don't do this, you won't get the adjustment correct. I over compensated for not removing it and forced the drum back on only to find i had adjusted it too much. Hopefully the hand brake will be better now. Was trying to find a video on how to adjust that too.

I'm trying to get the hub off a 2003 ford fusion which is the same type of assembly as this fiesta. I made a hub puller, but it was stuck on so tight I sheared a M12 bolt trying to pull the hub off. Any ideas what could be wrong? The car has done 110k miles and the hub may never have been removed

i just broke a bolț when changing myself the winter tyres with summer one,so can i change only the broken bolț from the drum? or i need to change all 4 with that bracket?

what did you torque the wheel nuts to? and why not torque the hub nut?

Great video many thanks! Q: what is the "paint" anti corrosion paint you use on drum please? Also what is the torque for the wheel nuts. MY Mk5 rear wheels are "locking up" when they get wet (car big wash with pressure hose ) and left for a few days. So i want to totally recondition the hubs and ideally, paint them black (face, hidden, white as you did) but the outer of the drum, black. Many thanks!

Came here looking for a clear view of the spring arrangement on the shoes. Just curious why you did the hub nut to get the drum off? If you take off the 4 bolts at the back behind the plate, the assembly comes away without disturbing the bearings. Just remember to disconnect the abs pick up.

Nice video. very useful. I notice the guy does not use a torque wrench to tighten the main nut? I find sometimes you cannot get the torque recommended; these torque settings are for new nuts/bolts and if you try and set it as recommended you end up stripping threads? Also they recommend you replace the nut; I guess if you torque it to point before stripping threads you can reuse the nut?

Why play with the adjuster before refitting, when you press the brakes it'll self adjust to the optimum position like it's designed?
@colski2228 жыл бұрын
its a 30mill socket for the centre nut behind the hub cap by the way and you will need a big bar to loosen it .

if you needed to replace the rear bearing on one of these would you know does the bearing sit inside the outer drum that you removed - i.e. the bit you removed the corrosion off or deeper inside the hub? thanks!

Yes it does
@davidgilfoyle83359 жыл бұрын
Great video clip, the Haynes manual says the hub nut is a laminated type and should be changed every time. You did not seem to use a new one. Is it ok to use the old nut?
@keitho88667 жыл бұрын
David Gilfoyle no you shouldn't use the old one. I replaced the hub and accidentally reused the old one it stripped before I got it to torque . which is 235nm BTW
@robertsheffer19896 жыл бұрын
It can be reused a max of 4 times according to my Haynes manual for Ford Focus but maybe different for this car
@muddyeighty9 жыл бұрын
How about torque setting of 230 nm for the hub nut or was this not needed .
@ProductionB18 жыл бұрын
Yes this is more important than the four bolts for the wheel to be honest because if that hub nut comes loose the whole wheel could slide off with the drum. I always use my torque wrench but it only goes to 210nm so I just wack it up to that and it has been fine.

Interesting video but how do you know the rear brakes are not up to correct efficiency ? I've had my Fiesta Mot'd and I was advised it only just passed with rear brake efficiency with 53% . I will now have to take it to a garage to see why its so low . I thought you would show us how to adjust the rear brakes .

So the bearings are now full of grinding abrasive, iron and rust dust, at least tape them up if your not going to wash and repack with grease.
