This is an old video but it's still very entertaining to watch the Fifth Gear team testing the 1.0L ecoboost engine in the focus. Voted best engine in the world 2 years in a row, it combines quick performance with maximum fuel economy.

Last year i had a 1 litre ecoboost which was the Fiesta Zetec S Red Edition and was a blast to drive. 140PS and a car that didn't weigh that much actually pulled through every gear and had such a sporty feeling to it, such a impressive engine. January i picked up my MK8 ST 3 cylinder and this is different gravy but that 1 litre was still a good laugh. If your young (I'm only 19) and are a petrolhead look at the 1 litre ecoboost's because you wont regret it. Low insurance group and cheap to run. You can pick up some cheap deals with them now as well

I’ve got the focus 1.0 125 and I love it.. nippy enough and cheap to run.. just make sure the degas pipe has been changed for the uprated version. Other than that, all good.

I have been driving the Fiesta Eco Boost on holiday & I am well impressed, considering I drive a VW Bora 1.9TDi 115bhp at home, the Fiesta is an excellent wee car. The model I have is I think top of the range, 4 elec windows, Sony Bluetooth stereo, half leather seats (heated), alloys. A further reviewer says it can be remapped to give better bhp, but the 125bhp is fine for me. It's very torquey considering it's only a 1.0 engine. I give it a 5 star rating. Well done Ford

As the owner of a Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost with just over 100,000 miles on it I can tell you they don't hold up well. Apparently head gasket leaks are common and and they self destruct. Of course to be fair, no engine does well with a head gasket leak but I've never had one go at 100K miles or sooner. (...some have reported as soon as 30,000 miles) . The cost to repair mine is well over the current Kelly Blue Book value so now I have a giant EcoBoost paperweight sitting in my driveway. ($5700 not including the turbo...) I'm going back to Subaru... I got 350, 000 miles out of my Impreza with no issues and it least it started to give me a little rod knock when it was time to rebuild. I'm done with Ford...

That’s why I was wary of them and ended up getting the 1.6 ti vct Duratec powered focus mk 3 last year. Was on 67000 I’m nearly on 82000 now. Tried and trusted it’s asking too much long term for a 1.0 3 cylinder to pull a focus around for many years. No oil is burnt between services which I’m impressed with that’s very rare (we change oil every 5000 as I don’t care what the book says oil at 5000 is past it’s best, you can hear the engine get quieter after changing so I wouldn’t want to leave it 10000 miles). I’m sorry to hear of the problems you’ve experienced hope things improve for you.

Well anyone who looked at the performance charts of these engines would have guessed it. 1.0 is turbo charged, and provides a little bit more torque at LOWER RPMs. If you get your torque fast and at lower rpms, you will get higher performance. One being 1.0, other being 1.6 litre does not matter much as long as they spend similar amounts of fuel. And turbos usually are better at fuel efficiency as well.

Wow, this played out like an advertisement. Like those "first drive" ads where people (actors) supposedly drive a brand's vehicles for the first time. They try to make the viewer trust the ad more by first showing skepticism of the product then have the actors get "blown away" by the performance. You beat an 11 second 0-60 time by a single car length. That's embarrassing, not impressive, no matter how many jump cuts you make with closeups of the ground to make it look faster.

+Sir Mutton Chops The ford focus 2.0 145hp reaches 60 mph in 10 seconds , so why should a tiny 1.0l do better than 11 seconds? If the 145 hp is such slow , I can't imagine how could be the 1.6. I'd never buy the 1.0 Ecoboost, but in the every day driving it will always be more pleasurable than the 1.6 and even cheaper to mantain... IMHO.

No car programme covers actual reality of ownership they all cover projected theories Big old simple under tuned engines last forever. F1 engines last a day... Turbocharge a fiat punto 1.4......vs 1.6 sporting....almost double the power. In the turbo...but there virtually extinct now....why overworking kills. Smaller piston gaps stronger materials modern control ecu development..they have made about 25% on Bhp reliably without effecting lifespan. We no longer consider plug colour etc. But the constant drive for carbon levels...the focus is not on engine life or performance it's all about emissions. Cars are so full of wires now they are so heavy they are getting so fat they need to comply to so many rules they can't help but be compromised in certain areas. The areas we can't put rules or emission tests on..well lifespan performance enjoyment (lifespan being very relevant to the environment) So can we have a review that acknowledges for example French car £ parts double alter 8 years

if the first series ecoboost break down, is never because of the turbo. - is because of coolant hoses (later revised and solved) - is because of late oil changes / not using the correct grade and specification oil, meaning the belt in oil will start to deteriorate and the rubber chunks will clock the oil pickup mesh. (solved on the revised 2020 engine on the mk4 focus which have a chain instead) One of my friend had an ecoboost focus who lasted 170,000km (105000 miles) until it got totalled in an accident. The engine was still perfect. only needed the regular servicing, it used to do UBER work. I know i'm replying to an 3 years old comment, but some things don't age well.

They're only built light if the manufacturer wants to build them light. The Ecoboost engine has a iron block, not an aluminium one like most other petrol engines, and uses a long stroke/narrow bore, so for a given cylinder pressure there is a lower force acting on the crank pin than the other way round. They also use high quality modern synthetic oil, which has come a long way from oils of old. These engines have been well tested by Ford, they will last. Maybe not as much as old unstressed engines, but it will last.

colintx800 It's very interesting , The ecoboost 1.0 has 125lbs/FT regardless of if it's a 100bhp or 125bhp. At a guess there's going to be a few kilos saved in 1.0 3pot engine . The 1.6 has 110lbs ft in the 103 and 125bhp . If both cars were equal bhp but the Ecoboost having an extra 10lbs of torque I'd say isn't going to make a whole lot of difference , but perhaps the 1.0 power delivery was better than the N/A 1.6 engine . But personally I know 5th gear dodgy tests inside out. What they most likely did was put the 1.6 with 103bhp against the 1.0 Ecoboost with 125bhp the extra 22 bhp would give it the edge . Hence the outcome we watched . You'd imagine 22bho would make a bigger difference but when you calculate the power to weight it becomes less significant .

Do you realize that, the 1 liter engine would be dead within 100-150k km or so, it is too small for that kind of car, it would be more appropriate for a ford fiesta or something small like that... Now take a look at those old Mercedes engines, 2.5 L with under 100HP, but those engines would take you over 1.000.000 kilometers. Of course if we're talking about protecting the enviorment, i would go for a smaller engine, 1.6 would be the best, it's not polluting so much , and it's not struggling to pull that weight, so imo the 1.0 L sucks... on this kind of car body

+Cristi CR actually a small engine struggles to pull a big car quite a bit and at higher speeds it will use more fuel if you beat on it on a highway. some friend of mine brought a fiesta of 1l ecoboost and it was drinking around 35-40% more than advertised.

+Cristi CR True that, it would struggle a lot more with everything.

iamhim No it won't it has a TURBO. struggling=slow. It isn't slow. So why the fuck is it struggling? It's not a human it's a car. These cars can get over 200k km's without problems.

***** Struggling doesn't equal slow necessarily. Usain Bolt and I can both run 100 metre at 15 seconds. However, Usain Bolt will do it completely effortlessly, while I might struggle a little more. We can both finish at the same time at 15 seconds, but for Usain Bolt, it will feel like he was just strolling, whereas I might be panting with my face red, even though we both finished at the same time. A bigger engine will use less effort to do same thing as a smaller engine, even if they are both the same speed. It's using less effort to work.

iamhim Seriously, engines are nothing like living organisms. Stop comparing them. But usuain bolt has a lot more power, so he IS a lot faster. A 150HP 1L turbo engine VS 150HP 2L NA engine will equally work as hard. As long as the 1L turbo engine is designed for the turbo and that power it's going to work for as long as the 2L 150HP engine. It's all about how the manufacterer wants to build it.

this is such a bullshit test, there is no f way 1.0 is quicker and everybody know it. Turbo would give it perhaps 1-2 meters of advance. With a 1.0 on the autobahn? Yeah, it can do it but not for long as the 1.6.

Move on a few years and the coolant leaks and wet belt failures of the Ecoboost are costing owners thousands of pounds in repair bills. Plus Ford's mpg claim is nonsense
