Detailed tutorial on how to remove & refit Ford Focus MK2 instrument cluster (Dashboard binnacle) - The 'Clocks' in these cars often fail, with faulty needles dropping to 0 & various warning lights on the dash coming on for no reason - fault codes stored are usually U1900 & eventually leading to a starting system fault where the car does not start or crank when the key is turned with an accompanying rapid flashing of the red ‘key / immobiliser’ LED light in the dashboard. You may also get error messages on the display screen such as ‘Transmission fault - service now’ & maybe even accelerator pedal failure
The best way to diagnose a faulty non starting Focus cluster is to hit the top of the dash! If it temporarily repairs the fault then it’s a sure bet your cluster is the fault!.

Thank you so much. My Ford Focus had the message “engine malfunction” then “transmission malfunction” then acceleration reduced. This problem affected the air conditioning and the gearbox. I visited the electrician and showed him the video, after suffering for 8 months, the repair was done at a cost of 50 dollars, and the car became excellent, thank you from Saudi Arabia. Hi I've got a 08 focus tdci with the engine malfunction light coming on the fella I bought the car off mentioned he'd done the resoldering after a month of ownership the light just comes on after about half a mile I've put it on 3 diagnostics an im getting no codes also noticed that my petrol light is now off with 30 miles of fuel any info would be much appreciated many thanks Jason .

Hi, it would be best to either use a wiring diagram, or check on your car which wires to need to make your own bench cable..

I have been getting front right and left rear speed sensor errors and power steering malfunction. Looked at the soldering, looked fine. All guages work apart from speed and mileage. Swapped ABS sensors, swapped battery. Still happening. Is it likely to be the dash at all?

Hi, it’s most probably not the instrument cluster in your case, I would advise checking the live data on your wheel speed sensors, wiring tests & ABS pump ECU - have a look at our ABS testing video for tips…

Hi i have this fault stored in a kuga wont crank over i can start engine if i power up the starter relay it will run i get a code for clutch switch corrilation also fro what i can tell clutch switch signal goes the keyless vehicle modual And instruments and to pcm Looks like iv got signal to kvm and instruments just dont think its sending signal to pcm Do u think the instrument panel is causing this

Hi, it is possible, but not by cloning - to clone these units they have to be identical part number - to change type we will have to install them, program keys by OBD & adapt the ECU to work with the clocks & manually adapt the mileage, if you are interested please contact us via the website (You will need to bring the whole vehicle to us to do this)

Hi, yes it’s possible.. but not by cloning - first you will have to program your keys to the IPC & then adapt ECU to IPC, and then make revisions as necessary - Forscan would most probably be the best tool for you to purchase & use for this..

No, the cluster is a critical part of the immobiliser system - the car cannot be driven without the cluster & a cluster from a different car will not work as a temporary fix..

You will need good soldering skills to repair this fault - the main reason we have to replace clusters is when people attempt repairs themselves!

Hi Sir. The LED display on the indicator of my 2009 model Focus turns off 10 minutes after locking the doors. So far, so normal. However, after 30 minutes or 1 hour, the led light starts to turn on again. I took it to a couple of mechanics and they couldn't figure it out. I wonder if you can give me an idea?

Hi & thanks for watching! The fault you have is generally not a cluster fault, there is most probably something ‘waking up’ the CAN-BUS network, this could be anything from an aftermarket stereo being fitted to a faulty door mechanism etc etc… these can be a bit of a nightmare to find even for a good auto electrician- good luck!!

Hi, thanks for watching!.. I’m pretty sure that in your case you will have GEM module problems- first thing to check is the multiplug connectors.. these have a habit of getting kicked by passengers & usually just need plugging back in correctly!

Hi there, My car is giving the same issue.. engine malfunction message displays on and off with traction control light and reduce acceleration message displays. Sometimes all the needles in cluster goes to zero as if the car is in ignition mode but the engine still running. Can all these problems be fixed if send you my speedometer cluster? Or do i need to visit your shop ?

Hi, I'm not familiar with this fault on these clusters.. there is apx 8 LED backlights on the circuit board, I can't see it being a faulty LED causing the whole unit to go out. I would imagine its a circuit board fault & in your case I would advise cloning (Refurbishing) a secondhand unit - we are able to do this if you need, immobiliser data & mileage will both be transfered - visit www.ecuconnection.co.uk for details.

Hi, possibly.. unfortunately there is no way I would be able to say for sure, my advice is to either take it to an auto electrician for diagnosis or if you want you can send in the cluster for repair to rule out cluster faults & see what remains. www.ecuconnection.co.uk

It will show the mileage of the car it came out of - furthermore your car will not start with a cluster from a different car due to the cluster being part of the immobiliser system on a Focus - it will need to be cloned to work on your car, this will also transfer the correct mileage - we are able to do this if you need!

Hi, sorry there is no way of knowing if the cluster is your fault with just this small amount of information - rule of thumb is that if you bang on the top of the dash or gently press on the front of the cluster & it temporarily fixes the fault then it will be your cluster..

Just wanting to know what things MEAN on the cluster display The numbers…the “mls” numbers Nothing in my manual, impossible to search for the right thing online. So annoying. I just want to know what things on my car MEANS!!!???

The first ‘mls’ is the full mileage covered by the vehicle, eg 78000 miles - the second ‘mls’ is a trip meter, eg 250 miles - this one can be reset to 0 by the controls on the stalk or the push button on the cluster…

Had my cluster go in yesterday for repair, for a 2009 Kuga, locally in southampton. As soon as i started the car, ESP and Engine Malfunction came up. The engine ran like crap, Accelaration was awful! cost me £150, picked the car up, it was great all errors gone, she ran great, then 30 mins later, errors came back. To say i was upset and pi**ed off was an understatement. I am at the point now, where by is it worth sending it away to this guy, who looks like he can do a professional job?! or do i waste money on a second hand unit, and pay another £150 to have it coded?! Are your prices the same? im sure i can stretch another £70, and a few days without a car!! please help me!!!!!!
