I have a 2022 Ford Maverick, 2.0 Ecoboost engine, AWD. I have been having brake problems since the beginning. The problem is the front brakes do not back out enough to leave a proper air gap between the brake pad and rotor when deactivating the service mode. Therefore the pads keep riding on the rotors causing glazing and grabby brakes when coming to a stop behind a vehicle. Turning off the active breaking did help with the grabby brakes but did not resolve the glazing issue. I took the truck into two different dealerships and the master techs could not find a solution. The calipers,brake hoses, and the brake master cylinder have been replaced with no success. After watching your video, I now suspect it may be a software issue. When I took the truck in for the recall notice 22C24/NHTSA recall 22V730, the dealership said they could not do the update due to no error. I plan to contact the Ford motor company hoping to get help from them in order to get some kind of software update.

I have the same problem but my dealer did the first fix it did nothing! The only thing I did that helped was shutting off the automatic brakes where it would hold the truck at stop signs or lights, and you could take your foot off the brake peddle doing that helped more then anything

Thank you for the continued coverage of this issue. My truck is a 2023 model built on Dec 17, 2022. I want to love it but the brakes drive me nuts. According to Ford chat, I have the latest software and the TSB doesn't apply to my truck. Having said that, I have had this issue. It is impossible to develop a natural brake method as a daily driver. Over a three day stretch, my brakes grabbed at every single stop. Then one day it stopped and now I am back to it being a once in a while occurrence. One thing I noted is that when the issue happens I find that the brake score pops up way early. It definitely feels like this truck needs more processing power throughout. The bluetooth disconnects a few times a week. The transition form gas to electric has caused shuddering on occasion. The truck operates oddly in the cold. So many weird things that feels like the computer/software needs a reset at times. I just hope the laggy software doesn't wear down or break anything in the process.

Just had my “software” updated and flashed “multiple” modules and its worse than before. Almost hit cars parking often. Don’t know when they are going to lock up or feel like they are letting go coming to a stoplight in traffic. Overall I hate the brakes in mine. And my transmission shudders constantly at low speeds. Which they said is “normal” after telling me they have never worked on one. Anyone having shuddering in transmission after letting off the gas at city speeds?

I have a 23 Maverick (delivered in early April) and noticed a bit of what you are discussing in this video. But, for what it's worth, let me throw this out there...I have a 98 Ford Ranger which I put less than 1000 miles a year on. I sometimes don't drive it for a couple of months, then to just pick up a load of mulch at the hardware store. Often in the past I've had the rear brakes really grab and lock up as I come to a stop. Somewhere I read that you can fix this by backing up at five or six miles and hour, then applying the brakes firmly to "adjust them". This certainly works on my Ranger and completely eliminates the problem I had. I know the Maverick has an entirely different system, but has anyone having the problem on the Mavericks tried this just on the slim chance it might alleviate the problem for awhile?
@TestDrivenTV
@TestDrivenTV Жыл бұрын
As discussed, it's a software programming issue - not a mechanical one.
@aldenpines
@aldenpines Жыл бұрын
@@TestDrivenTV Probably. However, the actual braking force against the wheels is purely mechanical, however the method to make those brake discs move. Those parts can, obviously, get out of adjustment. The very fact that the fix "wears off" after a couple of hundred miles is proof that it's something OTHER than software. Software doesn't change. The chip instruction to the braking system cannot change over time.
@TestDrivenTV
@TestDrivenTV Жыл бұрын
It's not a mechanical problem, it is a software problem. It's why software fixes it. It's a learning system, so it does adjust over time and how it behaves. That's the problem. The TSB software settings aren't permanent. The possible reasons for this are explored in the video.

I got my 2023 at the end of January this year and it has this exact problem - actually happened on the way home from the dealership but I've never had a hybrid so I thought it was normal. However, I was driving to Flagstaff last month after a snow storm and while driving on snow/ice in town, I pulled up to a red light at low speed and the brakes did their jump/grip behavior and I slid forward due to the road surface. If I had braked any later, I would have hit the car in front of me. I'll note I was also driving in "slippery" mode. I love my Maverick but with this brake issue happening sporadically and the experience I had in Flagstaff...I finally decided to Google if anyone else was having this problem. I can't thank you enough for your videos on this issue! I'm glad it's not just me... but I'm also concerned because there's clearly a problem and no definitive resolution at this time.

Same problem on my 2022 Maverick. Been to the dealer a couple of times but no luck. Delar seems clueless, probably intentionally clueless. I still get that inconsistent brake feel and that random clunk at very slow speeds. Makes parking with an object in front of you exciting. I think I'll report it to NHTSA. Only way we are going to make Ford fix this.

I have had the problem, but I have not noticed it recently. But when it did happen, usually it was coming off of the freeway. The truck seemed to be not transitioning to the friction brakes and then suddenly they would grab. The first time it happened, it scared me because I thought I wasn't going to stop before I bumped the car in front of me. But like I said, it hasn't happened in quite awhile. I have not had any of the fixes yet. Going next week for the airbag issue and I will see what they say about it.

I got Casco Bay Ford to do the TSB software update. It definitely helped. Now it's more like a first-generation hybrid. Not great, but if you were not told there was an issue with the brakes, you might not notice anything. The problems are: The owner has no way of "seeing" or confirming that the software update has actually been done. On my first visit to another southern Maine Ford dealer (not Casco Bay Ford) they nodded and said they would do the update. But they put the car on the lift, did nothing that I can detect, and billed Ford for "Warranty work.". My impression is that some dealers know how to do it and some can be trusted. And some, not so much. But it is unfortunate that it is not a user-confirmable change. On my tesla, in contrast to Ford, I can see exactly what software was changed and when. In a Ford, all I can see is the same dumb instrument cluster, with no "smart" information available. Correct me if I am wrong about that. I trust that the software was updated in my truck, because the braking behavior is so much better after the update. But is there a way for an owner to check for himself that the update was installed? Also, I have heard from a new 2023 model owner that his new Maverick has the grabby brakes. Is is possible that Ford in Mexico is still rolling out new trucks with the old grabby-braking problem?

Fishy? If it's a common problem among owners and continues to be a problem "after" being addressed/serviced by a dealership, then it seems to be two different problems. One, with the design and build of the braking system. And a second problem with the dealership's inability to "permanently" fix it. Like you said it may be because of the low cost/quality of parts in such a low msrp vehicle. Kinda sad for this to be the case when they're raising the price of the vehicle while not addressing this issue. Good breakdown of this issue. And thankyou for the time and effort spent in explaining your thoughts on the matter.

It seems like an easy fix would be to add one pedal driving like Tesla's. Then the computer doesn't need to hand off regen to the hydraulics. Probably some technical reasons it won't work, maybe the battery capacity not large enough for downhills or something.

The first mistake is buying a hybrid. Cars are allready unnecessarily over complicated. I owned a 2016 silverado with the 6 speed learning transmission. That truck was absolutely not fun to drive at all. Unpredictability just like what you are describing with the breaking issue. Politicians following the enviro-wacko movement has wrecked the automotive industry.

I told myself several new cars ago, that I would never buy a first year of any new vehicle. Just too many problems when you do and doing so you must realize you are a beta tester for the manufacturer. Well I ignored my own thoughts and ordered a '22 Maverick Hybrid. It arrived 1/22. I spent the next year going through recalls. I followed others on forums that had racked up much more miles than I having major problems that one should not be having on a new vehicle. These include a defective wire harness that would separate from it's connector from a a bad solder leaving the truck dead on the road. Ford refused to issue a recall and instead allowed customers to deal with being left stranded with a dead truck. Owners started carrying around jump starters in case their Maverick died from the bad harness. A defective clutch plate that causes the engine to shudder terribly. The plate is located between the electric motor and the gas engine allowing the system to transition from one to the other as needed. To repair the problem the drive train must be pulled. Then there is the braking problem. Over a year now and Ford still has no real fix. Ford has a lot to learn from Toyota how to build a cheap reliable hybrid vehicle. A Corolla hybrid is cheap and bullet proof. Finally I decided I could not expect reliability from this truck and made the decision to move on. Recently I took advantage of the crazy resale value of my Maverick, made 8k off of it and bought a reliable replacement from another manufacturer. Perhaps in a few years Ford will figure out how to build a Maverick and I will look at another.
