I have a Ford Mondeo Mk5 2016 2.0 TDCi BiTurbo 210 bhp estate. The model only comes with a Power-shift gear box. My local Ford dealer in Devon charged me £356.54 just to change the gear box Oil. hate the power shift box your right what you say about the correct oil if you use the wrong typeit makes the plastic spacers disintergrate in the clutch pack making the car judder and the plastic magnet holders on the selecor forks to brake away and the car dosnt know what gear it is in. what i would sugest and i know its expensive but get a box service kit from ford they come with the back seal for the oil filter housing that is bolted to the side of the box and replacement bolts and gaskets for the mechatronic unit so you can clean the swarf from the selector magnets runs like a dream after. the reason for going through the gears befor hand is it puts the box in service mode opening all the solenoidsalowing the oil to compleatly drain. you do the same after as it will purge the air from the system and take it out off service mode. its the same prosses when changing the clutch pack

Have a 2016 180ps with powershift. Love it. Only had 1 issue where it would go into "limp mode" under heavy load. Turned out to be an oil sensor on the gearbox (changed under warrenty). This is my 1st owned auto and will never go back to manual, I tow with it and its superb. Though I had a VW passet 2012 DSG for a week and hated every minute of that.

I run a 2011 S-Max same engine and gearbox. Had the car 6 years. Local Ford Stealers will charge anything from £250 -£400 for the service, I pay £250 obviously but will probably do it myself now after seeing the video! Ford recommend servicing the powershift every 37,500 miles or three years. My car is coming up for 110,000 miles. You know when the oil needs changing as the clutches start to slip to the point where every change is an issue and in gear acceleration is met with major slippage, change the oil and the car is beautiful and smooth again, I love it and have no complaints, I also tow with it and again it’s fantastic. I would definitely have another. Thanks for the video 👍

Hi Graeme, thanks for this comment. This/these seem to be my issues. Mainly in 1st and 2nd at the moment but suspect it'll get worse the longer it's left. Certain I don't have any leaks so must just be wear and tear. Have owned the vehicle since 119,000 and now on 142,000 with no evidence it's (outbox oil and filter) never been changed. Just ordered the same kit that's in the video for £112. Just a case of trying to figure out how to get the car jacked up and level to carry out the drain and re-fill.

Not a bad gearbox when its working although a read through various sites and forums on the internet might just put you off.Like most automatic gearboxes it will need regular servicing which most owners seem to neglect getting done and is often over looked due to expensive parts (mainly the cost of the oil)

Live in France and use local garage who does not want to do this job. hate the idea of going to Ford but might have to. Re the box, great. Just towed large caravan round Spain and Portugal, 3,000 miles with only one problem. 2 hours continuous driving including lot of hills at approx 55 mph, then turn off and immediately a 1 in 16 ramp up to campsite. car stopped and warning message "transmission overheating". waited a minute or so and proceeded slowly up the hill. No other problems but smell of hot oil that lingers, hence need to change oil. car has 95,000 miles on clock and don`t think oil has ever been changed. Good car, good gearbox. Hope that when time comes my sister-in-law will buy me another.

Same engine and gearbox inside a Ford Galaxy, I do the gearbox oil change every 20k miles . Its the tiny metal filings that go into the mechantronic solenoid valves that cause the issue of a faulty gearbox. Changing the oil earlier resolves this problem.

The Powershift transmission on these Mondeos/Kugas (6DCT450) aren’t the problem. The ones Ford had problems with are ones fitted to the Fiesta, Focus, Ecosport, BMax,(6DCT250) up to 2016. They had dry clutch packs and people who where used to driving automatics were driving them like torque converter autos and letting them creep along and holding them in Drive on hills. This made the clutch packs get hot and burn out almost like riding a manual clutch in a manual car. As the clutch packs got seriously hot the drive input seals would get hot and perish allowing gearbox oil to leak onto the clutch packs making them slip and eventually destroying them. The gears boxes are not made by Ford but a German company called Getrag, who make transmissions for other manufacturers.

There's a much simpler way to check the oil level and is probably more accurate. As with any automatic box, pour your oil in and start the engine and leave it in park and fill until it reaches the level, that way the hydraulic circuits are already primed. I typically find they need about 7.5 litres for a service, I wouldn't rely on the amounts drained to be an indicator as I've seen plenty with hardly any come out! When they work these 'boxes are lovely and smooth to drive, however they're far from reliable due to poor design of the clutch pack which fail - hence the nickname "powersh!ts" 🤣

Used to be a time when a gearbox (auto or manual) would easily outlast the rest of the car. Something that deeply offends the insatiable corporate greed. So it was deemed necessary to redesign the oh so simple gearbox to create an insanely complicated new kind of gearbox that could be relied upon to fail regularly and thus generate a continous revenue stream. Just like all those engines with EGR on them, another guaranteed multiple engine failure revenue generating system (which can be rectified with the fitting of a simple and cheap oil carch can, somthing that no car manfacturer supplies or fits). I wouldnt have a modern car if it was free.

Love your VLOGS I work in Australia for a Mitsubishi dealership Mitsubishi Evo and ralliart have the exact same trans there bulletproof reliable but over here there hideously expensive to maintain $350.00AD just for the filter. Then another $250AD for oil the only reason I’ve heard that the powershift trans has a bad name is due to the sane use of name used in there dry clutch version behind the petrol variant the wet clutch one you serviced are so reliable and used in so many applications/manufacturers. Typical bloody Ford trying to claim something that’s not theirs and then stuffing their version of it up.

So yes the powershifts have got such a bad rep that ford have had lawsuits and had to extend the warranty up to 10 years in some countries, only 5 in the UK. From what I've read it appears that the majority of faults were in the dry clutch versions fitted to the fiesta and focus models with the Mondeo having the wet clutch version. I think ford started fitting traditional torque converter auto boxes in the focus from 2016 onwards and also in the Mondeo from fairly recently. I believe the wet clutch ones are generally more reliable than the dry ones as long as they are maintained properly but still a complicated bit of kit.

Jadder at 1st to 2nd gear is a common behaviour with PS boxes. Check how old is your battery. If battery cant hold the voltage the gearbox will jadder between 1-2. Please dont ask me why. This is the cheapest you can check before you start spending money on crazy expensive components.

There are a few things you need to know before you buy ford with powershift automatic gearbox (MPS6) or before you start complaining about it. The powershift transmission manufactured before 2015 are less reliable because they use the same oil in wet clutch and in hydrolic gear shifting valves. Ford uses plastic parts in the clutch assembly. These parts break, wear off and small bits of plastic then block the hydrolic valves that move the gear shifters. You get all weird problems. Gear shifting works on cold engine then stops on hot engine etc. These plastic parts are causing all the problems. Changing oil is not gonna help much but you should still change it max every 20k miles (ford says 40k). Plus there is an oil filter inside the gearbox, which you cannot replace without taking the gearbox apart. The gearbox manufactured from 2015 has gearbox oil and clutch oil separated. And that does the trick. The plastic crumbs do not get into the hydrolic valves anymore and the whole gearbox is much more reliable. Ford considers this gearbox as non-serviceable. If anything brakes inside this gearbox, ford would tell you to replace the whole thing. And it costs milions $$$$. And because Ford considers this gearbox as non-serviceable there are no spare parts available. It is not particularly faulty gearbox when compared to other automakers but if it breaks you are doomed.

Just done this job for a customer, Retail prices as of 21.10.10 from Ford are, £40.89 for the filter £150.53 for 5L of oil £31.76 for 1L of oil Total, £223.18 As expensive as it is though, on a customers car it’s was still cheaper than a replacement gearbox should the aftermarket oil not quite be up to same spec as the genuine oil. Genuine oil also has a green tint to it for some reason.

Great video as always.. Just an addition to this MK4 facelift, the first version, from 2007-2008 they had 2 types of automatic transmission. Guys this box is the 6DCT450, from Getrag in collaboration with Ford at that time. But there is another one from AISIN W. (AWF21) with classic torque converter which has no exterior filter to change, and requires ATF red oil (WSS-M2C924-A)... for those who are still driving an old Mondeo, like me :))).

@@ln5747 well as you saw in Alan video, this gearbox has an external oil filter, and the classic torque converter has only magnets on the inside of the cover.
