Ford Mustang: The First Boss 429

We're back to finding the firsts! Today, we explore Gary Thompson's ‪@ford‬ #Mustang Boss 429. This 429 is the first to be delivered to a customer - titled Job #1.
The Boss 429 is recognized as being among some of the rarest and highly valued muscle cars to date. In total there were 1359 original Boss 429s made. The origin of the Boss 429 was to fulfil Ford's need to homologate the 429 semi-hemispherical engine for NASCAR racing. Ford was seeking to develop an engine that would better compete with the 426 Hemi from Chrysler in NASCAR's Grand National Division, now known as the NASCAR Cup Series.
‪@NASCAR‬'s homologation rules required that at least 500 cars be fitted with this motor and sold to the general public. After much consideration, it was decided by Ford that the Mustang would be the car that would house this new engine. Production of the Boss 429 began in 1968 at the Ford Rouge plant, where front apron assemblies revised to accept the large Boss 429 engine were installed during vehicle construction. These also provided a stronger and cleaner front structure, important considerations on such a performance car, and were coupled with reworked front fenders. The cars were then shipped to Kar Kraft's new assembly plant in Brighton, Michigan for engine installation and further modifications.

Had a 69 Mach 1in 79 with a bad 351C, had a rusty t-bird. My buddy said that a 429 will fit. We didn't know the part about kar kraft helping it fit. That wasn't a job for a 19 year old to do in the street with a sledge hammer and cherry picker. Sold it for $90. And learned

Just imagine the issues Kar Kraft had!! The Boss 429 was even WIDER than the 429 from the T-Bird! Your 351C was 25.5 inches wide, the 429 was 27 and the Boss 429 came in at 30 inches! BUT the widest mill Ford made was the 4.6 SOHC or DOHC measuring a killer 36 inches across!

What year was the T-bird it's weird you say that years ago early 2000s my dad bought a 79 T-bird out of a field that somebody had crammed a 1970 429 thunderjet into you just don't see stuff like that LOL be weird if it was the same car and my mom and dad now own a 69 Mach 1

Just like the 4V Cleveland, it was junk on acceleration....Glidden ran Kasse heads on the 500 ci Pro stock engines, and spent thousands of hours on the Cleveland heads to make them work. Both heads were designed for Nascar.....put your foot down, and let it breath for a LOOOOONG time!!

I'd rather have a 390 or a 428 Cobra Jet much more reliable same power 429 is not a street type of motor made for NASCAR racing for high RPMs for long periods of time.
