I was 15 when the '69 Boss 429 came out. I used to ride my bike to the local Ford dealership (Huntington Beach, CA) and drool all over the Boss 429 they had on the showroom floor. Before they would chase me off, I would sit behind the wheel and fantasize. Back then, I was a true blue Ford guy and that Mustang was the ultimate car. I was so obsessed about that Mustang I read every article in every magazine I could find and memorized every spec. I knew the rev limiter spec. I knew the rear end spec. I knew they came with solid lifters and then switched to hydraulics. For a 15 year old, I knew way too much about that car.

I will take that one....exactly as it sits. Beautiful Mustang BOSS 429. I would drive it everyday.

the 1970 mustang fastback is almost the best looking muscle car of all time, only the 1969 looked better.People thought the mid seventies trans ams and z28 cameras were great looking cars, in my opinion they were not even in the same league as these, in performance or looks.

a close friend has a 70 Boss 429 Mustang in this same blue with less than 10,000 miles on it. He bought it when he came home from Vietnam in early 72. He drove it locally for a summer and put it away. It's literally been in a heated garage ever since. Zero rust, immaculate condition. Still has the Polyglas tires. He has several old muscle cars in the same condition that haven't seen the street in 40 years. He has offered it to me and me only to buy. We are in the early stages of negotiations. It's truly amazing.

These motors are impressive to look at and would be awesome to say you own one but in reality, these Mustangs were made for a small block. My '70 fastback with factory shaker hood came with a 351 Cleveland and the 4 grand or so I invested in the early 70's to that motor brought me up to about 550 hp in front of a top loader and a Detroit Locker with 4:10 gears which I paid just $200 for, and it was a blast to play on the street and mid 12's in the quarter mile. At 65 I wish I still had it!

Guy up street had one when I was a kid. I remember it stock has a Holley 735CFM and the GIANT heads. Basically a HEMI-Ford.

My uncle had a rare mustang like this in 1969-70, he raced his at the local drag strip and was a member of the local mustang club. He was killed in Vietnam in 1971, and the car sat in my grampa's barn for a couple years before someone bought it. The last I knew, the car was rotting away in someone's back timber, stripped down of all it's parts and has trees growing out of it....really sad. THIS car has always been my 'if money were no object" dream cars, though I would have mine custom painted with candy apple red with gold metal flake mixed in the paint with the original black accents. Awesome cars:-)

In 1969 ford won the nascar championship with the boss engine in the Talladega. The hemi in the charger 500 and road runner couldn't keep up. This is why Richard Petty switched to the ford Talladega in the 69 season

Awesome car !!! I'm a proud Mustang enthusiast and have been for 35 years. In my opinion, 67-71 Mustangs were the best as far as classic muscle goes. It's unbelievable how inexpensive they actually sold for back then. If you were fortunate enough to buy one back then and still have it, you have a piece of muscle car history.

I think this car was previously owned by a buddy of mine, Joe B. in PA. I took a bunch of photos of it many years ago and listed it on ebay for him sometime prior to '08/'09. Last I heard... it was in some museum in Talladega. Super sweet car !

Race versions of the BOSS 429 used full hemispherical combustion chambers with domed pistons. Only the street versions used semi-hemispherical heads. As delivered, the street BOSS 429's were underrated but they did not make 500 HP. The later BOSS 429's had more horsepower than the early ones because they had more aggressive cams.

I grew up in West Los Angeles in the seventies, and a couple of guys I knew had these. They were not the best cars for street drag races, as NASCAR motors are tuned to make power at higher RPMs than desirable for a stop light grand prix. During the gas crisis back then, you could buy these muscle cars for a song. I remember buying a 70 Z28 in 1974 with only 27K miles for $2,000 on Van Nuys Blvd. It was a Wednesday “club night”, stop and go traffic up and down the strip and the car drove by with a For Sale sign. We pulled over and I bought it after a short test drive on side streets. It was a great car I owned for several years.

In 1971 I was a lot boy at Bountiful Lincoln Mercury in Utah, I drove a yellow 429 Cougar, you barely step into the gas and the rear tires would brake loose.

Back in the summer of 1975, I was out cruising in my Grabber Bue 1970 Mach 1 Cobra Jet 351C with my best friend when we went by Cochran's Auto Sales between Eugene, and Springfield, OR and saw one just like this car on the lot. We stopped in to take a look and was blown away by the motor and the stance of the car. We took it out for a test drive and the narrator is right, the Boss was not at all fun to drive in town. However, we got out in I5 and opened it up and that's where it shined. When we got back to the dealer, he offered to swap straight up for my CJ. I laughed and drove off. Months later that car was still on the lot. Today, I wished I had been smart enough to get and keep both. FYI: my avatar is me and my CJ at Monterey Bay when I was 19. Hot car, sun, surf, and pretty girls. Oh, the memories.

The insurance company stories are true. I had several muscle cars in the 70.s and early 80's and my agent actually had a booklet with all the models and engine horsepower ratings for every performance car, with the difference in premiums beside each engine option.

Honetsly Ive wnted a Boss 429 for decades. That was ,is the pinnacle, theres nothing that tops that imo ..... but learning what Ive learned in the last 6 months or so about all the engine specs and handling etc ... Id almost be just as happy to have thios car with a Boss 351 as opposed to the 429 , yes 429 draws the crazy money, Im talking personal preference. Driver preference, Ive became a big fan of the BOSS 351 lately.

It came with a 735 cfm Holley carb, not a 785. It had a smaller carb than the Boss 302 at 780cfm

He said the Hemi won more races than the Boss 9. It should be noted that the Boss 9 was basically built carte blanche by Holman-Moody! It had 50 more hp than the 426 in NASCAR trim! Look at the 69 NASCAR season! A 427 Ford won Daytona as the 429 wasn't ready! The Boss 9 went on to dominate the season! Richard Petty even switched over to Ford and the Boss 9! Chrysler had to revert to the "aero" cars to compete with this incredible engine! This led to the Charger 500s, Daytona's and Superbirds!! Also, Ford fielded the Taladega Torino and various Mercury offings!! 200mph with these incredible engines!! What a time! Love MOPAR and the HEMI, but the Boss 429 is probably the least understood GREATEST engine in racing history..not to mention the street versions (of which I have had two) including a Grabber Blue 70! I am here to tell you that these cars are phenomenal..even in retrospect!! An absolute THRILL to drive!! Our 69 S code was modified and would literally slam you in the seat! Quite impressive after 40 plus years! Love the Hurst shifter in the 70 and the better exhaust, but give me that 69 S code every day of the week and twice on Sunday!! I gotta drive a 427 SOHC Ford next!!

My friend owned the Orange Boss 429, blk interior, stripes and loovers. When he got it running after a used purchase. We went down to the local cruise strip and he pulled a hole shot, it blew a head gasket or something. That was the last ride in it after that he was in a crash, a Mach 1 passenger where he was the only survivor out of three. He was heavily handicapped and rigged the car with a handcapped system where he could drive the car. They put a 351 in it after all this.

I had the badest . I had a 69 1/2 Mach 1 SCJ fully loaded with the GT package added on top. Very rare with the low ratio rear end. More power didn't get it moving faster. I had to skip second gear to get it to grab. Many of the Bosses that were detuned to conform to DOT . Loss of midrange power was a negative. I'm not a motor head,I'm a driver and came to realize many more negatives with all the big blocks than almost nobody talks about . Street racing was crazy but you really could tell how your car performed against many other cars. Most muscle heads won't admit that the toughest cars vto run had half the horse power. My worst and most dangerous run was against a Porsche Carrera. I topped it at about 115 and lifted the car air born . The Porsche didn't move ahead but stayed with me and I thought I'm driving the wrong car. I have no respect for most all muscle cars and if I had my Mustang back I'd sell it. The only one I would probably like would be the Boss 302 . That car is the Top Boss and all other big block Mustangs are only worth slow Sunday driving. I did like cruising at 60 though, but I wanted my car to prove itself and drove it as hard as McQueen. I did one more and broke alone at 95 and put it in a full spin on wet pavement. The car just swung around that big chunk of steel up front. The only good thing about the car was the disc brakes. My recommendations if really driven is a bash plate ,and heavy duty coils up front and probably taller gears to keep it from just turning rubber. My car was stock with only upgraded shifter and traction bars,and no need for more HP. There is a replacement for displacement and that's reducing weight,and drive it like Steve. 😜❗

Car insurance was pretty simple to figure out in the 60s and 70s. Manufacturers fudging on the actual horsepower numbers helped a bit but the name of the car was the major determining Factor. Corvette, super sport, Z28, Cobra jet and so forth automatically got the highest rate. The rates were little bit lower for lower horsepower engines like straight sixes but any type of V8 meant a higher rate. AND I BEAT THEM!! In 1975 I dropped a 454 into a 1970 Nova two-door, I paid the same insurance as I would have had it had the original six-cylinder in it.

**Gotta love 'grabber blue'.** It looks different in different lighting, in that it looks darker or lighter depending upon the situation. There's a grabber blue A.C. Cobra kit car being advertised for sale on another channel, and it's rare to see Cobras in grabber blue, but it looks better than the common darker blue that cobras are known for.

TOO bad you didn't talk to an owner.. NEVER had a problem cold weather starting in Northern New York. And it really likes the cold air & clear roads. Just watch the ice patches. If I didn't know better I almost thought you had mine. -- Nope smog pump I think is on one of my shelves.... One of the few that I regret selling. And replacing the head o-rings was not that hard.

Better late than never, but the Insurance rates were based on horsepower and your driving record. I know I was there and had to deal with it. I had an opportunity to buy a Boss 429 Mustang just like the one in the video. I was stationed in Jacksonville Fla and the Porche Dealer had one. They were having a very hard time selling it. I tried but my insurance payments were going to be more than the car payments. I couldn't do it. So I settled for a 1970 Mach 1 instead.

These cars were largely overlooked, but on any given day, a stock '70 Boss 429, LS6 Chevelle, Buick GS Stage I, or Hemi 'Cuda could come out on top in a drag race. Boss 429's had monster ports, and a bigger cam and set of headers would truly wake them up. Great episode, thanks!

This engine came from Ford in a very restricted guise, just look at the factory carb. An engine this size needed an 850 cfm at least. This lead to not so great unmodified street performance, a beast none the less

Just a couple tidbits...There were some internal engine differences between the '69 and '70...the 69 had the real NASCAR connecting rods and crankshaft...the HP was the same though,but if you wanted to use the engine as a starting point for the ovals you'd want the '69. Also the hood was the car color in '69 but due to the high heat the Boss engine put out it caused the paint on the scoop to crinkle.

I am not sure if it is significant, but I would like to provide some information about the history of Mustangs racing in NASCAR events. It is well documented that my uncle, Bunkie Blackburn drove a 1969 Boss 302 Mustang prepared by Smokey Yunick in a NASCAR event. The car was prepared to run in the inaugural race at the Talladega Speedway in Alabama. My uncle fielded the 69 Boss in the NASCAR santioned Grand American series. Bunkie took the Boss to the pole during the qualifying rounds. Once the flag dropped, He was able to lap the field two times under green flag racing in the high revving 302. Bunkie led the race until the last lap. Unfortunately, a mechanical failure sidelined the car just before the finish. A Boss Mustang scored a win a few years later in a Winston Cup series event in Winston Salem. This race was a NASCAR santioned event that combined both the Grand Nation & Grand American cars. By 1970 Ford had already improved the exhaust system, a more aggressive cam and even had improved the carburetor, all this for the less common 820A version, but the fame of "slow" had already earned it on the streets in 1969. Perhaps they were not slow but rather not as fast as they claimed to be. Undoubtedly a sensational car

Gotta be OLD to remember those days now...I was a kid when my father bought his 70-BOSS...and from his 1965 Mustang (with 289) to the BOSS, I can affirm his INSANE ANGER that his insurance TRIPLED overnight, when he registered the title trade-over (old for new Mustang). There were CLEAR STATEMENTS by the insurance company apparently, that they WERE charging higher rates based on 'horsepower classifications'...something to do with 'stratified ratings' (I can only assume now that it was a 200-300 HP, 300-350 HP, 350-400 HP, and the OMG, you can't afford that amount of HP). Again, another reason that Ford and Dodge CUT THEIR NUMBERS far below equal GM sized ratings...GM was playing ball with Insurance companies since 1967...Ford and Dodge were NOT... On another note...let's not forget, by 1970, with Vietnam ongoing, the threat of higher insurance if you bought a 'big block performer', and the first minor OIL Embargo already starting...these cars were a definitive RISK to purchase...and MANY were sold for near-scrap prices by 1973, when the BIG OPEC EMBARGO happened! No one wanted the gas guzzlers anymore! (You 'young'uns' don't remember...but cars used to be financed on 18, 24 and 36 month notes...with NO ONE EVEN DREAMING of financing a car for 5-years back then! So, every 3-years was a 'complete model rollover' in the streets)

NASCAR rules states you gotta sell what you race. We can all thank Larry Shinoda for selling this engine. That's how the mustang Boss 429 was born.

At 7:45 there is an add for the Boss 429 Mustang. If you look closely at the picture the engine is a 427 SOHC not a Boss 429.
