Truck experiencing a 'Hard Start', or 'No Start' condition? This could be the problem! YKP's quick 'How-To' tutorial by a veteran mechanic shows exactly how to find and replace the crankshaft position sensor on your 2.3-liter 'Duratec' (2002 - 2011) Ford Ranger or Mazda B-series pickup truck, along with what this important vehicle sensor does and how it works.
This information also applies to virtually any other vehicle (Ford Focus, etc.) using this similar, Mazda-derived engine. Almost every car and truck built in the modern, fuel-injected era utilizes one of these sensors which can cause all sorts of starting and running-related issues. Note: On various other engines this sensor may be located in a different location, although the purpose will be the same.

Hey Nick -- sorry to hear you went through all that... WoW! Glad we were able to help though... ironically someone had suggested our fuel pump was bad as well, but opted to try the crank sensor first and that did the trick!

As I understand it, the CPS will affect the fuel pump operation some how.

Bro I’m goin’ through the same thing. Almost took my bed off to get to the fuel pump. But didn’t feel like it. Gonna buy the Crankshaft Position Sensor and install it. Hope it’s this, can’t take my kayak to go fishin’ without my truck workin’. So it’s important. Lol 😂

That's entirely possible Chris. The ECU may not trigger the fuel pump unless the CPS receives a proper reference signal. Probably need the OEM Ford service manual to confirm that though -- pure speculation at this point. Appreciate your comment!

The sensor is supposed to come with a plastic alignment tool. And therr is a specific procedure to properly align it. Just lutting the new sensor in the same location as the old one doesnt guarantee it will be properly aligned and can greatly affect timing and kther factors.

None of the sensors we've purchased have ever included an alignment tool Perjian -- if you'd like to share a more accurate method (the specific procedure you mentioned), we'd be happy to share it with all viewers here on the channel. Thanks for posting!

Will this cause no spark to the coil pack? Everything else kicks on but when I tested the coil pack it wouldn't do anything tried holding a screw driver and wasn't shocked
@YourKeysPlease

Hey Devin, it's possible -- put simply, the crank sensor sends its signal to the ECU (engine computer) first. The ECU then adjusts timing and triggers the coil pack based on that information. Rather than risking a violent shock, try removing one spark plug, securely inserting it in the plug wire, and grounding the spark plug base to a metal part of the vehicle. You can then watch for spark while the engine is cranked over without being shocked... hope this helps!

Does the engine have to be at TDC when replacing the Crankshaft Positioning Sensor?
@YourKeysPlease
@YourKeysPlease 2 жыл бұрын
Hey JT. No, it wasn't necessary to bring the engine to TDC. The toothed reluctor ring on the crankshaft self-references when the engine is turning over. Just keep an eye on the bolt locations if your sensors are slotted. Hope this helps -- appreciate the comment!

Will that cause my vehicle to act like it's running out of gas after driving about 40 to 60 miles? It shuts down, but after it sits a little bit, it starts up fine and runs for awhile then shuts down again

It's possible Mike, and it's an inexpensive part. Ours never set a 'Check Engine' light either, so it may be worth a try. Appreciate your comment.

so dont need to relearn?
@YourKeysPlease
@YourKeysPlease 11 ай бұрын
Since the battery usually should be disconnected when working on electrical aspects of the vehicle, the ECU will go through a relearning process on its own once you drive the truck a few times. If you're due for a state inspection that includes emissions testing, relearning every drive cycle monitors on some vehicles can take up to 100 miles of varying driving conditions. If you have access to a good OBD-II scan tool it will also show this data. Hope this helps!
