Should I upgrade my daily driver? Come along on my daily commute to work and let's talk about the 2010 Ford Ranger 4 cylinder 5 speed manual XL regular cab truck with the 2.3L. This is my daily driver. I spend 3-4 hours per work day in the vehicle during my 165 mile commute. We will test the MPG fuel economy on my daily commute, and talk about things I like and dislike about this vehicle after almost 40,000 miles of use. #fordranger #toyotavenza #rav4 #businessman #corporate

The IMRC in the first two years of the 2.3l Duratec (the 2.3l engine from 2001-2011) makes a HUGE difference in mileage. Its such a pain to keep working right that ford dropped it in the years 2004-2011, but my 2003 got 33 MPG on the last 300 mile drive I did. Also believe it or not the bed covers also make the gas mileage worse too.

Glad you left that segment in the video about perception. Young people really needed to hear that and if they’re listening, they should know it shouldn’t matter. I know very successful people who drive beat up old farm trucks or older cars because that’s what makes them comfortable. I like being at the age in life where appearances and facades no longer matter much to me. Thanks for sharing this!

Don't sell your ranger to keep up with the Joneses. Most of those executives with their fancy cars to go with their fancy titles are actually broke. The bank owns all of it. Its all a dog and pony show. Keep your good little Ranger and if you want things like cruise, go grab the parts from ebay or a scrap yard and put it on. Its plug and play. You can add a heater seat cover if you want for winter use. Every day you keep driving that paid off Ranger is a day it is putting money in your pocket for your family. Your commute would instantaneously destroy the value of any of those cars you listed after just a year or two. Also, a Ranger makes for much better content than a Rav4. I found your channel because of that Ranger. Keep it up. Ill leave you with a quote from Dave Ramsey, "Dont buy things you cant afford with money you dont have to impress people you dont even like." If you have to take a loan on it, its definitely not worth buying.

I have a 1996 Ranger XLT Supercab, 4 cyl 5 speed manual that I bought brand new. About 250,000 miles on it. It was running a little rough so I did some work and sunk a little money in it a few months go. I've done very little to it in 27 years of ownership. I was excited to see what kind of gas mileage I was getting, so did some testing late spring. Doing about 62 mph on a 4 lane country highway I travel frequently, I got around 34 mpg. Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised. I almost got rid of it 6-7 years ago, so glad I didn't.

Great story! I hope to get to and past that 250k mile mark too! What all did you do to it recently? Plugs and wires?
@dannyvernon1098
@dannyvernon1098 9 ай бұрын
@@PurpleCollarLife Nope, although it could probably use a new set of both. It was running/idling really rough, so I replaced the idle air control valve. That seemed to help some, but not fully. I then figured out that the coolant temp sensor was bad, the one that tells the CPU what the water temp is and adjusts the idle accordingly. It would idle 3000-3500 rpm at times, then barley idle at all, but mostly idle way high. Replaced that sensor, ran like a top. I run my tires about 5-10% above recommended pressure, and I've always been easy on the gas pedal, no matter what I drive. If I keep it between 55-62 mph or so on the highway, I seem to be able to get that kind of mileage. Once I go above that I don't know exactly the milage I get right now (haven't checked it at that speed), but I can tell it is quite a bit lower.

Thanks for the review and thoughts. I loved my 2007 Ranger SC 2.3L auto. With a cap I would always get 26.5- 29 mpg and oddly it made little difference if it was loaded or not or towing a little 4 x 8 trailer and the best milage was above 70mph, defies all logic I know. I even got 26 with 2000# a 4 wheel pop up camper, the only thing that made milage drop was a head wind and the worst I ever got was 19-20 with a head wind and the camper. Sold it after 100k miles and it still looked like new, wished I had kept it.

26 MPG is really good for a truck. A lot of vehicles tend to lose their fuel efficiency as they get older with more miles, but the Ranger has stood the test of time really well. 👍 Still a really good number! My dad just bought a 2023 Nissan Rogue with All Wheel Drive. He seems to like it, you might put it on your list of vehicles to give a "look see" 😎 Thanks for sharing, Chad! I had a 1997 Ford Ranger with the 2.3 and 5 speed. My nephew ended up with it....by the time he got it, it had close to 300K miles on it. I got similar milage with it. I just took my 1999 Ford F250 Super Duty about 375 mile round trip yesterday picking up a 1967 Ford 2000 tractor. It has the V10 and I got around 10-11 mpg overall, pulling an empty 18 foot trailer on the way there and hauling the tractor on the trailer back home. My truck doesn't seem to care whether it's pulling an empty load or hauling something, it gets about the same mileage empty or loaded.

I can tell that my Ranger has lots of life left in it too. I wouldn't be surprised if it makes it to 300K miles or more - as long as the body and frame hold up. I have it oil undercoated each year. Congrats on the new Ford tractor! That V10 F250 is a keeper also.

Star fire Solaris. Really increased my MPG’s. Check them out !!! 235/75/15. Also I put some Bilstien shocks on mine and the ride is unbelievable. If you have much wind noise around your doors/ windows going down the road check out a video on adjusting your hinges in just a fuz to pull door tight against the seals for a little less wind noise. Hope it helps !!!

I got 39 mpg from Fort Worth Texas to Lorena, TX. 130 mile trip only burned 3.33 gallons of 87 regular gasoline. Tires are same size as factory height but narrower worn down close to wear bars 40 psi . 4cylinder 2.5 Liter 5 speed Manuel transmission. Now I drove between 45mph to 60 mph 95% of the trip all in 5th gear . And I was in bumper to bumper traffic for 30 minutes or so . Now Fort Worth Texas is at a higher altitude than Lorena so the 130 mile trip was mostly ever so slightly down hill most of the way . With a brand new air filter I suspect with the same careful driving I could get 24 to 35 mpg up to Fort Worth and 39 to 40 mpg back . Tire size new air filter at least 40psi can make a huge difference in mpg, and absolutely no going over 55-60 mph . At 70 mph your fighting a very high persure air buildup and your adding lots of rpm to get that speed

Hey there, I bumped into your vid randomly. I like your POV and appreciate your input in all topics you mentioned. I wanted a Ranger or Tacoma as my first new car when I was a teenager but I ended up with a Nissan Maxima which was great but complete opposite of a small truck. I don't think I'll ever get one unless I buy a brand new one off a dealership since the used car market is bananas and I don't know when selling cars approaching 200k miles was a thing (those used to be in the junkyards). IMO just keep driving the Ranger until the wheels fall off and don't worry about car payments, insurance and other people's perception like in you work parking lot. Some of them are most likely struggling to keep up with the BMW, MB, Lexus name just so they can get seen getting out of the car for those 2 minutes. Why is your commute that much. I once had a job in Deerfield Beach from Miami, FL and I didn't do that for too long.

It was a beautiful car, with the 302 - magnaflow exhaust, and only driven on nice days. Stored in the winters. Never abused or raced. I sold it to get money for a Jeep - but then found out about a year later that the new owner had crashed all four corners, destroyed the engine, and didn't care for it at all. So sad!!

Recently purchased a 2006 b2300 single cab base model (A/C and auto are the only two options on this truck). Had only 43k miles, and paid $3k for it. Needed new shocks, ball joints, brakes, new plugs and wires, O2 sensor, and the A/C was/is still broken (multiple leaks so far, fix one and another shows up). Once the A/C is fixed, it will basically be a new truck. The interior is in perfect condition, and the exterior has normal scratches. The engine is in great condition. I bought it to drive while my modified first-generation Tacoma gets rebuilt after a drunk driver totaled it last year. I have not decided on if I want to keep this b2300 after I finish the Tacoma rebuild or not. I've put so much money into it, I dont think I could recover that money from selling it so soon. However, I am also planning on buying a 2025 Mustang GT Convertible once the 2025 order forms open up later this year, and I don't need 3 vehicles😂 Edit: BTW, my best highway only mpg with the b2300 is 26.9 mpg after a 170 mile trip. This was sticking to speeds of 60-65mph.

One thing to consider... purchase a 2-year-old car in your 30's then trade it every 3 years - take the residual and roll into a new 2 year old. You will not pay too much more - and you can drive a mostly new car all the time. And yes, I agree the vehicle you drive places an image in some other's minds. Depends on the group but - the "In crowd " is a thing. So, it is something to take notice of - whether it means anything to you - or not is another story. It may be of importance in some jobs..

I don't really care what people think of me because I'm laughing all the way to the bank, plus, a vehicle is one of the worst investments one can make. So I choose to spend my money on other things. Also, not gonna lie, I enjoy performing my own maintenance and the 89' has been in the family since I was a kid, so sentimental value for sure. You can actually somewhat work on these old things too without obsurd dealer prices. Thanks for your thoughts! I do like that the Ranger is fairly easy to work on. I don't do engine work but it's been easy for me to change oil, replace brake pads and rotors, and the Ranger really hasn't need anything else other than a new serpentine belt at around 90,000 miles. I'd never trade the Ranger in at a dealership - they wouldn't understand it's value. I'd either sell it outright to someone who appreciates it, or keep it (shhh - don't tell Jennifer we'd be adding another car to the fleet!). :)

That's got to be tough daily commute. We live by the Pgh airport and often fish up in your neighborhood. I've commuted long distances in past years but thankfully my current drive is only across the Ohio River. On longer trips I'm definitely more comfortable in my wife's smaller suv than my truck. Keep up the great videos and maybe you won't have to make that long drive anymore. Ps. We try to save on fuel with Sam's club or Costco and have found that Love's off the Slippery Rock exit is always cheaper than other chains in the area.

It gives me lots of think time for sure! We'll keep putting out the videos. Please keep watching and commenting and maybe I'll get to retire a little early! :) I always used to get gas at the Pilot (New Castle 422 exit of 79), until that Love's came in at Slippery Rock. Now I have that Love's app that saves me 10 cents per gallon! For this video though - I wanted to fill up closer to home and get a better representation of the drive from place to place without fueling up in the middle. Thanks for watching!

You are very fortunate to have that Ranger. Anyone who is in the market for a compact truck knows how good this Ranger was/is and they have become highly sought out and prices are crazy. You are getting good economy considering the speed you're driving. I considered buying a Ranger if I could find one, and was looking at the Hybrid Maverick pretty hard as well. The more I thought about it I decided that since I already have a truck that I only use for doing truck things that I should probably just replace/update my car. So after considering that idea and the tax credit situation for electric vehicles I decided to buy the EV. I don't really care for a lot of distracting tech in my vehicles. The thing that I really wanted in the EV was the adaptive cruise being the biggie and the blindspot monitoring and alerting. Those two features were the things that I thought would be important and I made sure the vehicles I was looking at had those features. I thought Android Auto or Apply Carplay features seemed to make more sense than the walled garden of the manufacturers. The insurance difference in cost for the car I bought wasn't really that much more than what my previous car was costing me. Would it be nice to have a compact truck? Sure, but it would have been more of a compromise than a car. I am enjoying the EV. It gets charged at home for the regular local commuting stuff, and it has been on a few road trips already and has worked out very well. The big complaint is the charging infrastructure needs to be dramatically improved for those infrequent road trips. Since I am charging at home most of the time that isn't a deal breaker, but when you are road tripping it complicates things by having to think and plan things out. I didn't buy a Tesla. The Tesla does take care of a lot of that hassle, but I felt the Tesla tech gets in the way of the driver experience in ways I don't like. And beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and I am not a fan of how they look. The efficiency has been great so far. I am happy with it. Jim Farley is out doing a little road trip action in the Lightning and I think 2025 we should see some really good second generation EV's coming out of Ford and the other brands. 2025 is going to be a big year it appears and the tech and batteries are improving very quickly now. I would hang onto the Ranger for a bit to see what is coming. It should be pretty impressive. On the company impressions thing. I don't know if it really is that much of a factor anymore. People used to be very focused on what people wear, things they have, the car they drive. But that really seemed to fade away as they relaxed the dress code at a lot of places and being in the office became optional. As for those fixated on what people are driving I always have parked out in the back of the parking lot away from everyone else and very few people knew what I drove when I went into the office. I really would not make any decision regarding a vehicle based on others impressions at the job. Just keep doing what you're doing!

Thank you for the great feedback! I appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences and your thoughts. I'm curious what EV you ended up with. There are certainly lots more options now than in 2014 when I purchased the Chevy Volt that was my daily driver for 7 years (until we let Mackenzie have it to drive when she turned 16). Thanks again!

@@PurpleCollarLife Since I don't road trip very often and didn't need a fast charging car I went with the Bolt since it has been around the longest of the current crop of EV's and GM did a refresh and dropped the price. GM has it pretty well sorted out other than the slow charging speed. It was between the Bolt and the Tesla and I just preferred the Bolt more. They are ending production the end of this year on the Bolt so I did a search for one in inventory and made some calls around and was able to find a few within a distance I was willing to go get one for MSRP. Then to add icing to the cake the dealer was willing to drive the car to me across the state and deliver it to me for free. Red carpet service. I say I don't road trip and somehow this year I have more road trips planned than in the last 5 years combined. I am finding for regional travel where I might have to make 1 or 2 stops the Bolt is working out fine. Been on 2 road trips with it already within the region and it as been no problem. For longer trips I would either need to have the spare time since those charging stops add up or take the ICEV. That is what is happening next week. I have to do a cross country run so I will be loading up the truck for that trip. Lots of things are changing very quickly now with the battery tech. If you aren't in a hurry I would hang tight. It looks like the next crop of EV's are going to have better batteries, charge faster, and be more affordable. There should be a lot of new car/truck/suv announcements coming and everyone is switching over to the NACS Tesla plug on the vehicles starting 2025. With your commute I would certainly consider and EV. The savings would add up pretty fast for you. Find something that gets you the range you need even factoring in the winter range loss and you should be in good shape. BTW don't trust the range figures given out by Tesla. People are finding in real world tests that they don't match reality and a recent WSJ video showed that the Tesla fell pretty short of the range figure and only matched the Mach-e so they chose to lease a Mach-e since the tech is changing quickly right now.

Not really comparable to a ranger, but I have a 2020 Corolla SE manual, I average about 39 mpg in my 85 mile daily commute. It's a comfortable car. Pretty easy to buzz along at 80 mph with no strain on the engine. I had a 08' Crown Vic before.. it got about 16 mpg. I also have a 2010 Tacoma V6, it's even worse on mileage.

I’m American, but I call a big semitruck a lorry, like they do in the UK. I just think it rolls off the tongue easier. And not to dump on the Ranger, but have you thought about a hybrid Maverick? It’s a lot easier to maintain in my experience, it gets 40 MPG and it’s a lot lower-emissions than the Ranger. I know you also have a Chevy Bolt, so just a little food for thought.

I'd certainly recommend the 2006-2011 Ford Ranger. I do like that the 2010 and 2011 have the side curtain airbags. I like the manual transmission personally, bu it really depends on your driving environment. If I were in stop and go city traffic a lot, I would probably rather have the automatic transmission. But since my 165 mile daily commute is around 75% highway, 5% city, and 20% rural roads - the manual 5 speed works out good for me.

I am considering a Tesla for my commute. The biggest issue is the Model 3 - it is a bit small for a guy my size. But, no wear parts. Brake pads are saved by deceleration/charging. No gasoline. No time wasted at a gas station (charge at night). It is a interesting business case. Most people inject their politics into the decision. As a finance decision, the Tesla appears to be the vest value. Add in the creature comforts and safety of self driving - and it becomes a tough call. Closer than I realized. The VW TDI's are attractive, too. But the ownership cost of a Tesla is hard to ignore.

I agree that it's not a political decision and it's a financial decision. I drove our 2014 Chevy Volt until Mackenzie turned 16 and we let her start driving it. It was an excellent daily driver too. The gas savings were great (I averaged between 70 and 140 MPG), I never had to replace the brakes (pads or rotors), and it was totally reliable and well-engineered.

As far as you talking about what you drive could be a perceptive of how successful you are, that’s just a bunch of crap and people shouldn’t judge someone by what they drive. I knew a guy that was an airline pilot and he lived over two hours away from the airport so he would commute but I don’t know how many days a week he did that he was a pilot. But he was an older guy and he had been doing it for many years and he was almost ready to retire. But he told me that he didn’t have any car payments because he would just buy the cheapest small little vehicle that was just a piece of crap to drive back-and-forth to work. And that was because he was saving money on car payment and insurance. And one time on his way home, the car broke down at a gas station and he just left it there and called a local junkyard to come get it and then went and bought another cheap car to get back-and-forth to work. Years ago, my dad used to drive over an hour one way to work and he would just drive some cheap vehicle that he didn’t pay much for. And I know of a few cars that broke down on him and he just left it where it broke down and went and got another one because it was a lot cheaper than making a car payment. Who cares what people think of you for what you drive.

How much you fuel ⛽️ up the Ranger in a week
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 10 ай бұрын
It depends on the price of gasoline, how many days I am in the office with this commute, and wich route I take. Typically I get gas every other day (I don't like it to go below 1/4 tank). I usually budget between $90 and $150 per week for my gasoline if I'm in the Ranger. If I drive the F350 a day, or two, that increases my fuel spend a good amount.
