I believe the 2006-2011 Ford Ranger truck may be the best daily driver ever! Specifically, the 4 cylinder model, 2 wheel drive versions. I prefer the 5 speed manual transmission setup. I also prefer the XL base model, but do like cloth seats, and air conditioning. I WISH this truck had cruise control. My Ranger averages 25-31 mpg in my daily commute. The Ranger is a perfec runaround pickup, and certainly an economy truck. Great value. #outdoorgans #purplecollarlife

This whole concept of having multiple cars, one to use as a daily driver and the other ones for god knows what reason, always cracks me up. The point of a car is transportation for me. It needs to be all weather, full time start every day and drive. I have 1 car. Always have always will.

I totally can appreciate that. I just don't want to put all those miles, all the wear and tear, and all the gasoline/diesel through our big truck taking it on my 165 mile per day daily commute to work. So for me, it makes sense to have a commute daily driver, and a separate 1-ton truck for our camping adventures, boating, etc.

I have 7 cars comes in handy when the people around you can't drive. They crashed 2 of my cars this year and if it wasn't for the back ups I would have been in a shitty situation one guy hit my daily driver when I was about to get home from work and it took 4 months to get repairs because the other insurance wouldn't claim fault for the accident until I got my attorney involved

I'm so happy that I've found your video. I'm from Brazil and I have a 2007 2.3 Ranger that I love. I have it as my daily drive. It's made in Argentina but has the same 2.3 Duratec engine. It works well with 27% of ethanol in our gas. Very reliable, although I must replace around 700 ml of 5w30 oil / 1 thousand km. Same fuel consumption as yours (about 12 km/l on the road and 9 km/l in the city).

David - you're right. If I were going new, I'd probably choose the F150 over the Ranger. A coworker of mine traded a Ranger with the 4.0 V6 in on a new F150 and said he gets better gas mileage with the new F-150 than he did with his 4.0 Ranger.

It really pays to have a gas saver. All of our trucks are fuel pigs but need to be to get the job done. I commute 150 miles a day to the plant when im active. Bought a 14 nissan versa just for to and from work and its been great! Good review of the ranger, some weight in the back will help a lot in a storm. Our go to winter truck is our 2004 ford excursion.

I love the ford ranger 4 cylinder manual trans . I have had 4 curantley have a 06 great for a every day driver if the roads are dry Just make sure you keep up with the timeing belt.

I have a 1990 4cyl 5-speed ranger. I bought it 4 years ago for $800 and it’s been a champ since. I beat the shit out of it and it doesn’t ever complain. Has a 7’ bed too, that thing goes to the dump so much. And the lumber yard

Yep - I’m getting older to! I used to cringe every time some old guy bought a truck because the first thing they always did was put a topper on the dang thing, thus advertising to the world they were a geezer! Now, I like the dang things too……😂 I own a pristine, low-mileage, 2009 Ranger (my second) that I bought new just because I like them and it has lived a very pampered life. To quote the service writer at my local Ford dealer, it’s “the cleanest f-ing Ranger” he’s ever seen! The thing that I find funny about my Ranger is how much attention it gets when I take it out around town - I think I get more people that come up to look at it then I do when I take one of my collector Mustangs out-and-about! Most of the Rangers from this era were purchased to be used and abused, and if you have one that is still in nice shape, people really take notice!

I agree. I have a 2010 XL short bed w/ vinyl seats, rubber floor mat, cruise-control, automatic, 4.10 gears, the upper-end factory Pioneer stereo, HD hitch, etc. It now has 63k miles.

I love Rangers, have had so far- 1986 2.3l single cab 2wd 5spd, it had over 700,000 on it when I sold it. 1990 2.9l V-6 XLT 5spd, that one I still have but, took off the road at 425,000 miles. It's going to get a frame off resto for my next big project. 1994 4.0l V-6 XLT auto, my current daily driver, over 260,000 miles. Luckily I live where we don't need road salt and with decent care a Ranger will last a long time with just normal wear item replacements. The best one for mileage was the 1990 2.9l, I could easily average 28-30, but the little 2.3l wasn't too bad at 23-25.

That's awesome! You certainly know something about Ford Rangers! I did like the 2.9l I had, but I don't remember it getting nearly 30 MPG. But mine was a 4 WD, 5 speed, extended cab. And I was young and probably wasn't conserving gasoline.

Nice truck. I too, live in the rust belt (Chicago) but I bought a California 1 owner 2000 Ranger XLT extended cab with 78,248 miles. I would have liked a 4 cylinder but this one is a 3.0 liter Flex Fuel V6 with automatic. It runs great and I use it mostly for hauling small stuff from Home Depot and stuff to the recycling center. It’s rust free and in great shape. I love my little truck. Thanks for a great video.

Oh boy that’s a nice Ranger! Dad has 3 Rangers and I have one. I’m currently working on mine in hopes of getting it dependable again. I agree 100% on the Ranger being the best daily driver or run around vehicle ever. I wanted to find Hayden a Ranger but it’s hard to run across one in good condition or with low miles. You did good finding that one!

We are on our 4th Ranger. Our current one is a 2011 XLT super cab with a 4.0 V6 and auto transmission. Our 1st was a 83, horrible 2.0 L , In 90 I bought one with a 3.0 and didn’t care for that motor either. My wife bought an 89 from her uncle. It had the 2.3 with a 5spd stick. At about 270K miles she didn’t lock in the hubs, hit some ice and flipped it in a ditch. Our insurance fixed it so we continued to drive it until about 300K and the wiring harness fried. We Love our 11. It’s almost 12 years old and only has 35K miles.

These little Rangers with the 2.3 are super reliable and easy to maintain. At least that's been my experience having owned two of them.

@@PurpleCollarLife Yes the 2.3 is a bullet proof engine. The new Ranger’s have the 2.3, but they’re turbo charged so sadly they won’t last as long as the naturally aspirated 2.3 that you have now. I’d like to find a low mileage 2.3 4X4 reg cab short bed for working around our orchard or doing a little bit of off roading. The wheel base is too long on our current super cab 6’ bed for that. But we still use it for hauling gravel, dirt etc around our property and getting us to my favorite fishing hole. You mentioned that you had an oil undercoat. Here in the PNW we have LineX spray in bed liner sprayed as our undercoating. The LineX also makes the cabin quieter. I sincerely hope you get as many miles as you can from your Ranger.

I've owned three. Great trucks. All two-wheel drive. I live in Colorado, and we get some snow. I installed an Eaton Trutrac differential. That helped greatly with the snow. I get the same fuel mileage, 28/30 mpg. That's with the 2.3/5 spd. This one is a 2008 regular cab. One set of brakes, I'm on the second set of tires. Three sets of shocks, our roads are junk. Zero problems so far. 110k miles. Great lightweight truck. I have diesels for the heavy stuff.

I live in Eastern Ontario Canada, I have only ever daily driven 2wd trucks and cars, and while the amount of snow might pale comparison to northern Ontario, we still get quite a bit.

I have a 2006 Ranger with the 2.3 engine and auto trans. It is black, and I don't have a shell on the back. It came without fog lights, however I installed them myself. I put LED lightbulbs in the headlights and the fog lights. I love this truck, it just fits me well. I will tell you about a feature that I didn't discover for years. In the bed, there are four indented areas on the side walls, two ahead of the wheel well, and two behind the wheel well. If you put a 2x6 or 2.4 in these, you can carry a 4x8 sheet of plywood, or drywall flat. Or several sheets. I used a 2x6 on the front ones, and I installed bicycle fork clamps to make a bike rack I can keep in the truck or take out as needed.

Nice truck. I'm driving a 92 Ford ranger xlt 4x4 with a five speed and a 2.9 . I'm getting 21 mph I love my truck. Nothing like a good simple dependable. Enjoy your new ride.

Kevin - that's awesome! I really enjoyed my Ranger XLT 4x4 with the 2.9. I had it all repainted nicely, a set of American Racing Outlaw II wheels on it, and it was a sharp truck. It was always very reliable and simple to fix if something did go wrong. You're in PA too, right? Do you undercoat the Ranger to keep it from rusting?

Best winter combo for that truck is nokian hakkapeliitta and weight in the box. Expensive, yes, but I like them too. Truck has traction control as well as skid control. Add top end tires and u R set. -- Used prices on these trucks skyrocketed in the last few years.

I have a 2011 Ranger ext cab 2.3/Auto Silver..... It was built in October 18th of 2011 The last Ranger was Built December 16th of 2011 .....So mine is defintley one of the last of it's era. It only has 70k Miles.

2004 was the beginning with the new grill plus the 2.3 engine hp was increased to 143. The 1st half of 2001 model year had the old German design 2.5 4 cylinder. Then half way through the 2001 model year Ford switched to the Mazda design 16 valve 2.3 4 cylinder engine with 135hp which continued through the 2003 year.

Awesome info. We really like the 2.3 engine that I had in our 2006, and this 2010. It's still a 4 cylinder, but with impressive power. And perfect for a daily driver truck. It just sips gas compared to a big V6 or V8.

I bought a 2010 Ford Ranger XLT 4cyl 5sp a few weeks ago to replace a 96 Accord that got stolen in Dec. It was almost the same size in length and width, engine was almost identical in hp and MPG was the same as my car. The only gripe I have about the truck is that the power windows shudder when you roll them down but hopefully I can get that fixed. Other than that, the truck runs great. The truck would have been the best if Ford had a 4cyl turbo diesel option :)

I have a white 2010 five speed Ranger that I regularly get 29 mpg in mixed driving here in SE Tennessee. I'm pretty much expert in getting good fuel efficiency on a stick and when I drive the truck at a steady 60 mph for extended trips, I get an honest well over 30 mpg! I've loaded up the bed with a thousand pounds at times and the truck will handle the load. In fifth gear, going up any kind of an incline on the highway, don't expect any acceleration because it just can't. The truck is pretty zippy around town and like yours, it has roll up windows, but also vinyl seats and rubber flooring (no carpets). I have about 100,000 miles, I've changed the plugs, tranny fluid, plug wires, coolant, diff and bled the brakes, All those jobs were straight forward and parts are dirt cheap. i'd love to get the storage center arm rest. I guess I'll be checking junk yards for that. I splurged on a spray in bed liner, but this truck does handle mild snow predictably in my opinion. It certainly is good on rough roads even though it's only two wheel drive.

Thanks for your comment, Garth! This is my 2nd two-wheel drive Ford Ranger. The other one was a 2006, silver. I have been super happy with both. During my long commutes, the truck does great. Like you say, it's reliable, easy to work on, and just a great vehicle. I get 26-30 MPG most of the time. But I drive 70 on the interstate. This is my first winter with this truck. With the 2006, I did okay. I typically drive the 4x4 F350 if we're expecting heavy snow. On this 2010 Ranger, I put studded winter tires - so I think it'll do a bit better. The 2006 didn't have traction control, this one does. I wish there was a bit more storage inside (I'm always looking for somewhere to stash my sunglasses, gloves, etc.). I do like that center armrest storage - but it fills quickly. Thanks for watching!

People will generally like what they have in their Rangers as all the engine offering are pretty reliable. But you can't deny the 4.0 is the most saught after for a reason.

I believe you are right about the DD . But i think a older one is more desirable for that use. Electronics is what goes bad with time. So less Electronics is less cost per mile. I have a 96 3L 2wd anto ranger supercab and a 93 4x4 4L 5speed i am building up the 93 to do a 2.3l eco swap. 93 will be my small tow rig/nice daily. My 19 f350 gets 12 mpg with or with out a load. The 96 is the 60miles to work and back and probably my sons first truck.

The 2010 and 2011 were also the only years with adjustable headrests and 4 wheel disc brakes. 5:30 just a few corrections: Ford did not stop making the Ford Ranger. They just stopped selling them in the USA. You can find a lot of diesel manual Rangers in the southern states that came from Mexico. Also the new rangers were rated at 23-26 mpg highway with best in class efficiency and towing. A lot of known magazines and critics say they are one of the most dependable trucks on the market. Consumer reports actually ranked the Ranger second only to the Tacoma. Consumer reports also ranked the Ranger second on resale value to the Tacoma. The new modern Ranger actually beat the Tacoma in reliability, similar to how the latest Gen F150 beat the Tundra in reliability for the first couple years.

agree with you i recently found out there is a 4 cyl manual trans with 4x4 avail it even has the the 4 low 4 high and 2 wd switch my 07 currently has 125 k i put 115 k on it it is perfect rust free no dent garage kept a dealer recently offered me 1500 on a trade inn i was like u are crazy good buy...i am still frig it and will consider all the upgrades i have always dreamed about...

I have said truck: it is a 1995 Ford Ranger XL Regular Cab Long Bed 4×4; it has a 2.3 I4 Lima mated to an M5OD and BW 13-54, manual-transfer case with manually-locking hubs and a 4.10 differential. The 4-cylinder 4×4s are quite rare, and they could be had until 1997; the long-bed option on them was even rarer.

Just thought I'd let you know that some of those Chevy volts are catching fire so you might want to keep an eye out for a recall supposedly the LG batteries that are in them are causing fires and the cars are burning to the ground they've had lawsuits with Hyundai and settled and Ford stopped using them and have switched to SK batteries for those new electric trucks coming out. I would definitely keep an eye on it especially if your trusting it to be reliable for your teenage daughter.

Thanks for the heads up. I think the issue has actually been with the Chevy Bolt, rather than the Chevy Volt. But we'll certainly do some research to make sure that Mackenzie stays safe in the Volt. We've been really happy with the Volt so far. I purchased it new in 2014, and it's had almost no problems (other than the thin Goodyear Assurance tires). Thanks for watching out for us. Change the oil every 4K miles with Mobile 1 full synthetic and your 2.3 should get 350K - 500K miles

I've been using the Motorcraft synthetic blend and Motorcraft FL-910 oil filter since I got the truck. I do a lot of highway miles - accumulating 3300 miles per month sometimes. I'm hoping this Ranger lasts me to that 500,000 mile mark!

@@PurpleCollarLife Continue to maintain it and there’s a chance that it will make it to 500K. Change the transmission and rear differential every 30K - 50K miles and you’ll never have a problem with them. When the electrical system went out on my wife’s 88 Ranger at 300K, the engine was still running like new. Also I’ve found that adding a K&N intake and a FlowMaster exhaust will increase your hp, torque and mpg. I did those two mods to our current Ranger 4.0 V6 4X4 and went from 19mpg to 23mpg on the freeway with the cruise set on 75mph.

Thanks for the info. I did look into this previously. I didn't like the way it connected to the engine. It didn't seem as safe as the factory installed cruise control.

I had 2 and I miss them both! ( long bed 4x4 2007 reg cab and ext cab 2010 4x2 2.3 4cyl. Both automatics though) but very reliable and very good on gas. You're 100% right these Rangers were the best ones. Wished Ford still made them as Heritage Edition Rangers

I currently have: 2004 XL 2.3 5 sp manual longbed. 2009 XL 2.3 5 sp manual longbed. 2011 XLT 2.3 5 sp manual supercab. All three are white with a.c. My 2004 is currently for sale. I deliver pizza for a living. One of my brothers has a silver 2011 XLT 2.3 5 speed manual regular cab shortbed. He is a painting contractor.

That’s a great collection, Boyd! That 2011 2.3 5 speed super cab must have been a hard one to find. It’s about impossible to find that configuration around here. How many of yours have the cloth seats? I had trouble finding one with cloth seats instead of the vinyl. But I REALLY was hoping to find one that was the 2.3 5 speed with cruise. I didn’t find one though.

@@PurpleCollarLife 2009 and 2011 have cloth seats, 2004 doesn’t. I still had a year of payments left on my 2009 when a dealer posted the 2011 on Craigslist. It was on Craigslist for about a month when they finally lowered it to $12,000 and I got curious. I looked at it and I liked the extra room of the Supercab and I was approved for the loan. I actually hadn’t been looking for a truck at the time so it was kind of an impulse buy.

I saw that there are some aftermarket cruise control options. Have you ever tried one? I was a little worried about them. I wonder if they automatically turn off when you tap the brakes like the OEM systems do?

Thanks for watching and commenting. I've had really good luck with the two Rangers I've owned with the 2.3. The 80's Ranger I had with the 2.9 (V6) was also good. I did have that 4.0 in an Explorer and it seemed reliable, but used more gas than it should have. I've never experienced the 3.0.

@@PurpleCollarLife right my mother had a 4.0 explorer 04…just sold this year. My ranger was also made in Mexico which I hear could be some of the problems I had…my biggest problem on that 3.0 was the camshaft position sensor, shaft and sensor failed all the time, changed about every 10k miles, I drive almost similar to you, 100 miles a day so I had to change that 3 times a year. Saying all that tho I traded it off 2 years ago and picked up a new Jeep. Transmission slips etc has a ton of problems 2 years old…warranty lasted a year. I’d take that ranger back with its cam sensor problem anyway, motor and transmission were solid with 215k miles

It’s an amazing and dependable vehicle. Repairs are inexpensive (at least the one’s I have had so far). It’s easy to park, hauls around mostly whatever I need, is fun to drive, is great on gas, and still feels safer than a car.

When I was shopping, I saw some priced way too high for their condition. Used prices are pretty high right now. I cast a wide net looking for this one, and traveled about a 5 hour drive one way to look at it. I paid a fair price for the truck, but still below what KBB value says it should be.

I have a 2011 ranger with the 2.3! I have 104,000 miles on it.Love my little truck! Runs like a top,but now the miles are getting up.Any idea when I should be worried about a water pump,radiator flush,new upper and lower radiator hoses etc?

Hi Brad - Great question. I'm not sure. I believe on my 2006 Ranger, I had 125,000 miles and hadn't replaced any of those parts.

I've always read 180-210 on the forums. Mine runs at about the 1/2 way point on the gauge all the time - warm weather or cold. I like that it heats up quickly in the winter and doesn't seem to mind hot summer days with the Air Conditioning on. Thanks for watching!

Hi Josh - I found the Ranger used with the cap already on it. This is my second Ranger that has had a cap - and I love the ability to haul things in the rain, snow, sun, and wind - with no worries about the cargo getting damaged/wet/etc. I've even put a roll-out pad and sleeping bag back there and slept overnight on a few occasions. It's a great setup!

I have a 2003 Ranger edge , mine is the 4 l not the 4 cylinder , and a five-speed automatic not a 5-speed manual . As far as people saying that you can't drive a two-wheel drive because you live in the snow belt . For 4 years I drove a 1995 Camaro year-round in Canada . People that don't know how to drive a two-wheel drive in the snow shouldn't be driving at all . In Europe they actually have driving schools where they teach people to drive Porsche 911s in the snow .

I did fine in the snow with winter studded tires. We do live in the hills of the snow belt of Pennsylvania - so there were some days we had some significant snow fall and treacherous roads. On the worst of the days, I still prefer to drive the big F350 4x4. But you're right that the 4x2 is a capable truck if you have proper tires and know how to drive in snow with some success.

Just like the North Atlantic meets the Caribbean . Instead of hurricanes we got massive Cloud formations that usually ended up coming down as white stuff because we were too far north for it to be the wet stuff . Imagine if every single raindrop that hit Florida was snow instead .

Do you have the 2.3. liter 4 cylinder, or one of the V6 engines? I would think you'd get better than 15 mpg with the 4 cylinder, even in the automatic. I wonder if you need to run some Lucas fuel treatment through the truck? I put some in once a month or so. And I also make sure my air filter is clean.

It's great. I travel on the interstate often. I have no problem maintaining 70 MPH in PA, and 75 MPH in Michigan. For steep grades, I do shift down to 4th, then sometimes 3rd. But it has no trouble maintaining speed on the interstate. Thanks for watching!

It almost doesn’t make sense to him get three or 4 miles per gallon more if you can’t have four-wheel-drive and have to pay almost as much anyway!! You could probably get two or three more miles per gallon with nothing but synthetic fluids!

Is an EV considering Chevy has had a lawsuit with those pieces of junk Catching Fire and burning people's houses down You would've been better off getting her. Our Volt has been extremely reliable. It's currently over 165,000 miles - totally trouble-free. Those incidents of fires were in the Chevy Bolt if I remember correctly, not the Volt.
