I am someone who only needs an extended cab and is going to pimp out the back of the 6 foot bed for off road camping adventures. After a lot of research and pricing, the Ranger is my choice For me, a deeper bed is a better option as I am going to have a lifted platform sleeping bed in the truck bed and custom storage and drawers underneath. Great video comparison that helps one decide the truck they want and need for how they are going to use it.

Good breakdowns on the topics between the two for each category. Most people will drive these daily and it's important to mention the things you did. There's a typo however at the 10:11 mark for the V6 displacement. Not a big deal that ruins the video, but just a heads up!

I was in Oregon helping my sister buy a truck last week. I got a Tacoma as a rental (3000 miles on it) as this was one of the cars she was interested in. We ended up buying the Ranger over the F150 and Tacoma. I drove a few hundred miles on the Tacoma up to Mt St Helens and hated it by the time I got back. I found the handling at highway speeds difficult and downright dangerous at times. Hitting a pothole caused something similar to the Jeep death wobble and I later hit a large puddle at 40 mph which caused it to pull worse than any vehicle I have ever driven. This was not an alignment problem but felt more like a suspension that couldn't handle the larger tires it came with. The Ranger handled far superior, had better head room, better leg room, better seats along with the larger bed with the extended cab. The Ranger was a 21 XLT with 18K on it. I really don't get why companies give so much credit to Toyota and other Japanese manufacturers over American vehicles. They may be slightly more reliable but I find the interiors small and more of a truck for those that don't really need a truck. As I told my sister the Toyota is a truck for a 20 year old not for someone that needs the cargo capabilities of a real truck.

You sir, have won the internet. I have these same exact thoughts and always called the Tacoma a “I want a truck just to fit in with the fad, but don’t really need a truck” truck. I see Tacomas everywhere (I live in Olympia, WA). They’re all clean. I never see them towing or carrying anything in the bed aside from maybe a keg lmao. Thank you! I love my Ranger. I get crap all the time for the looks. But guess what? I have a truck that can out tow your Tacoma, has better handling, and better speed. Sure, the Tacoma has reliability for anything from 1st gen to 2nd gen. I’ve seen tons and heard of tons of Tacoma 3rd gens breaking down. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I don’t care for looks! I care for being able to tow my 7000lb camper, being able to carry my tools, wood, mulch, and whatever my wife needs for her garden. I don’t off road, so I don’t care for that. But if I ever needed to, my Ranger I’m sure can get the job done. Maybe not as good as a Tacoma. But at least I won’t be stuck in a ditch like a Ram would lol.. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Just test drive both and see what you like. I was split 50/50 until I drove a 2020 V6 Tacoma. It felt lethargic when trying to pass at highway speeds. The transmission was clunky and felt like it was from a truck built 10 years ago. On the flip side, the Ranger had much more pep. Additionally, for less than $1000 I had the dealership install the Ford performance package that is supposed to add 40 hp and 60 ft/lbs of torque. The difference is significant. I still think the Tacoma looks a little better, but I love my 2021 Ranger.

This is a good review. I will say you shouldn't buy a Tacoma as a lower cost truck alternative. The suspension on those trucks in all options is great, steering is great, its got a tight turn radius, and the clearance is enough to match the larger trucks. Its the favorite of field engineers and surveyors and I prefer it (as an engineer) over an f150 and Silverado for these reasons as long as you get one of the upper models with the v6. They offer blistein and fox struts too. They can take a beating and are useful on top of mountain trail for exploration and down into the mine pit. With that said, I might take the ranger if I was an everyday home owner due to the higher tow, the higher sidewall on the bed, the acceleration, and the lower cost. Tacoma is a smaller work truck for those who need this and a much better offroading vehicle (assuming you don't buy that antiquated base i4, the mpg is low because that's a very old engine model). The Ranger is a lower cost and better mpg alternative for an f150.

Can't argue about the tow capacity and payload, but the real world MPG are pretty much the same for both, also the lower initial cost will mean higher cost to maintain in the long run, a 4 cylinder Ford will never last long as a V6 Toyota. Buy once, cry once.

@@westcoastplinkin6559 That may be true but my 1990 Tacoma SR5 with a 3.0L V6 was a pile of junk. It was grossly underpowered, CV joints would regularly fail (3 times in 5 yrs), transfer case took a dump and after only 5 yrs it became a rust bucket. Had two Rangers, two Edge Sports, an Escape, Explorer with nothing more than routine maintenance with a couple hundred thousand miles on each (I drive a few hundred miles a day for work). In Toyotas defense, my parents never had the issues I had with my Toyota. I’m not a Toyota hater by any means but ‘statistics’ are typically personal opinions of a survey and not very scientific. I’m sure there are a lot of people that hate Ford or Chevy or Nissan for that matter and a prime example is my experience with my Tacoma. I never bought another one and never had reliability issues with anything I have driven since. Call it luck, I call it taking care of a significant investment. 😁

I’ve owned both. The Ranger has been more reliable. Tacomas DO break. My frame rusted out from under two Tacoma’s prematurely. However, the ride is a bit rough in the Ranger. Also, it’s hard to get the best MPG from the FX4 package. I’ve had one with the Sport package only that got 23.5 mpg consistently on road trips. For those who don’t know, the Ranger never really went away. It is a tried and trued platform in overseas markets. And the engine is not new. It’s has a long history of reliability. Not a fanboy on either side. It’s a truck, not my friend. Both have flaws. Both have pluses. The aftermarket is better for the Tacoma.

They all make decent trucks now. Interestingly, as I type this from Uruguay, I’ve seen about the same amount of Amroks, Hilux, and Rangers here. Only pointing that out because none of the three were available in North America for a long time and now only the Ranger is. In a culture where they don’t identify as their vehicles, the three seem to have even footing, even though the Ranger and VW are built on the same platform. P.S. The one POS Ranger you can manage to find still running isn’t going there. And Toyota’s don’t require much maintenance. That is kind of the point of them. Get real.

No, you don’t rest your case; the ford ranger looks like a sedan fusion got sliced in half and someone added a bed, literally has the ugliest f**kin front in the lineup. But hey, to each their own right? 😏 also when it comes to dependability, toyota out classes the ford in every aspect; there’s a reason ford has a reputation and joke in the auto industry as ( FOUND ON ROAD DEAD) so, the fact that the auto industry clowns on your so called precious brand also the dependability sh*ts all over ford. But hey again, to each their Own….:)

And to add on top of it, the frame the body is peanuts compare to American made Tacomas and tundras, I see countless videos on KZfaq how fords get banged up pretty good by cars twice as small, like a Prius for example. And ONLY THE FORDS 😆 looks like quality has also gone down the crapper here bud. Sure the Tacoma may not have the best and fancy interior but at least the overall frame and engine is bullet proof.

Ok, so one thing I want to get clear is that you just said you were In a head on collision with this titan and your “side” was crushed? Hmm interesting was it one side or both? I just really need to understand your logic here 🤣 because unless you hit a side wall or battered in from a side/front collision there’s no way in hell your “side” would be crushed in. So was it one or both? Having a hard time believing this little tale of yours. And hey, like I said, I feel just the same way with the fords. And I used to like em, but they’ve really gone down the crapper and not only that but the brand itself is in a lot of economical doo-doo and they’re pushing EVs faster than they’re producing the infamous Ford F-150 “military grade” 🤣🤣 I actually know someone who’s worked at the ford plant in Detroit and he said they couldn’t pay him enough to go work back there.

I’ll be honest with you because when it comes to vehicles I like to be upfront when talking to people about it or my mechanic. I have never ever in my entire 38 years of living had an issue with a ford model prior to 1999… Toyotas I’ve owned 3.. NEVER had an issue with the transmission or overall any mechanical/electrical issue. My grandfather ran a old model Toyota pickup 800,000 miles and he still owns it! I’ve had excellent fords from 1994-1999 models that ran spectacular. Now In todays world, Toyotas are notorious for their dependable engine/electrical reliability, the Japanese know their stuff! American made cars have lost their way. It’s sad because they truly were the crown jewel in the industry. Ford f150s have become cheap aluminum trucks with a half ass chassis with most materials out of china. Not to mention an aluminum block. Toyota runs a cast iron engine on the tacomas and withstand heat a lot better than the ford trucks. But overall! I’m not going to bad mouth you and your opinion on ford. I like Toyota you like ford. We can leave it at that

@@johnappleseed9290woah, that was a lot. One minute you called Tacomas and Tundras “American made”, the next minute you’re saying you won’t bad mouth someone for their opinion immediately after bad mouthing them for their opinion. Toyotas are great for reliability and dependability, I’ll give you that. But when it comes to doing actual truck things like towing, they’re awful. Horrendous mpg, slow af, very expensive when something does break, and notorious for being one of the most uncomfortable trucks on the market. They’re also extremely outdated and very overrated compared to other mid sizes. If you’re going to bash Ford and list all of the cons from Ford, then at least do the same for Toyota. In other words, stop skewing your argument in favor of Toyota just to make Toyota sound more appealing…. 😂

Drove both: 2022 Ranger and 2023 Tacoma and here's what I found: The RANGER is more fun to drive, more responsive and feels like a sporty car that sits up high; however, it comes with an uneven suspension and a clunk thanks to ford's quality control; you will feel this clunk when going over speed bumps or potholes. The TACOMA feels more like a truck: heavier and more solid; its not that responsive, is not a fast truck for sure but rest assured it will outlast the ranger...so at least you get that.
