Just got a truck from my employer and the previous guy that drove it has this issue with it and has a stupid bungee strap set up so that the tailgate stays latched. Opens just fine, just not willing to stay shut. Will definitely be diagnosing and might use your video to do it. Thanks!

Went back and reviewed this to see what happened to my latch. On a good note, it’s not broken and the spring has not jumped. These springs do feel a bit anemic though and the handle was slow to return. Plenty of that Blaster white grease and moving the mechanisms got everything back to functioning. Thanks again for the vid. Helped my situation a ton.

I l liked the way you really focused in on that one side to see what was going on. My 99 F150 was starting to do the same thing. So now I have an idea of what to do going forward with my 2003. Good job! Stay Blessed!

Nothing wrong with teaching anyone who wants to learn more about the vehicle. You get a better customer. He's going to do the stuff that you would have thrown on for minimal charge if any. But now they know what you are paying attention to. So now you get it before its a complete mess. Easier for you, cheaper for them. We don't want to charge customers an arm and a leg. The job is going to dictate that. But I want you happy and confident with me and the shop that you continue to come back. And eventually bring friends and family. Preaching to the choir. Hope you're doing well. Hope things go well with your stomach. Trying to get all my students to follow and subscribe. The need some outside reinforcement to my ethical talks. And the awesome day to day things that I take for granted. There's too many cutthroat shops and techs giving the rest of us a bad name.

I ended up messing with mine. Like I mentioned it was gummy feeling. Very mushy. I pulled the panel and hit everything with brake clean, washed it well with soapy water, tightened the adjustment rods about one thread in, covered it in white lithium grease, and removed all the loose and peeling spray on cover. It is now the nicest opening and closing gate I have ever used. Paired with my gate strut I would have thought I had a limited model. Hahaha

That happened with my 99 F150 ... at first I thought I had locked the tailgate.. after taking the back panel off I saw the plastic dohickey that holds one of the rods had come unclipped. The little clip that holds the clamshell shut broke and wouldn't stay closed.. I just closed it permanently with super glue... I'll put a new one in when the superglue doesn't wotk... I'm sure those plastic parts are super cheap.

Almost the same exact truck as mine mines the 2012 version but with a 5.0L and red letter badging . Love my truck...I do have a tailgate issue though buy with the key lock...it'll lock but not unlock...and I have a tanu cover I cant get into with out wrecking it sadly and not about to blow another $500 to replace it.

You can replace all that yourself you don't need them to do that it's so easy to get in that system

I appreciate the trial and error process shown. Got a little seasick from the camera movement, but I know you were a one man production. @ 7:00 Did you actually move the spring “underneath” “on the bottom” of the latch? You mentioned that, but then opened and closed the tailgate saying working fine at the end. Thanks for posting.
@FordBossMe Жыл бұрын
So there is two holes on that one side of where the spring was mounted and I moved it to the lower hole with a pair of needle nose pliers some people may have to move the latch from inside the tailgate and do it outside to tailgate but I did it inside with a long thin pair of needle nose pliers

I have a 2018 f150. The tailgate opens on its own. Lost some items the other day. Has that been an issue with other Ford or maybe just mine?
@FordBossMe2 жыл бұрын
Yes bud there's a recall on unintended tailgate opening there's been a recall on those for quite some time but lots of people don't come in to get it fixed now you have to replace the wires that go to the electronic tailgate with a new connector in the rear Call up your local dealer give them your VIN number and ask them what recalls are available on your truck and go in and get the unintended tailgate opening done

I have the FX2 version, same issues. Its a 2013 model made October 2012, it had already rust forming at the front bumper at year 2. Now it looks like total rust, and even the rear bumper is rusting around the sensors as well pretty badly. Can't believe they built these trucks so cheaply.
@itsGuy Жыл бұрын
Update, I just fixed my tailgate, the spring was stuck in the same spot as yours lol. Only thing is my key doesn't turn, I can unlock and lock it manually, but the key won't turn, possibly needs a new cylinder or not seeing something stuck. Will check out again another day or just suck it up bring to a locksmith and maybe they can fix the lock or replace it

My 1988 GMC PU had rods running from the tailgate handle in the middle to each latch on the side. The passenger side rod was made with two bends in it to get to the location. After years, the angles opened up and the latch would not open up. Had to pry the fender away from the tailgate to open it !! Re-bent and good to go. Poor design.

Ecoboost are junk! My letter from Ford yesterday proves it. The letter was in reference to the "undesirable noise" from the engine. The cam phaser gone bad because of the computer. I'm tired of getting recall letters. Then my Ford dealer does not want to provide a loaner. I've used 4 different Ford dealers in the DFW area. I buy a new one every 18 months. Eaglegards...
