Oh yah, happens all the time on these engines but thankfully its a pretty easy fix. However do NOT use anything but an OEM gasket for this particular engine. All the other options tend to fail rather quickly if not immediately after. I highly recommend rockauto if you want OEM or similar parts for fairly cheap.

@AltruisticWarrior
@AltruisticWarrior 29 күн бұрын
@mejhon6592 i would personally just replace the coils and make sure to use either OEM, Bosch or Hitachi. They tend to go bad once you remove them and you won't even know it half the time outside of poor performance and really bad MPG. My mechanic changed my harmonic balancer not too long ago and put the same coils back in. Car didnt run right and only got 11mpg. With a better scan tool i was able to see the small misfires and fixed with Bosch coils. Now I'm back up to 25mpg or so(transit connect van). So yah, just with the amount of hot and cool cycles, the coils don't do well once theyre removed. It's another story if you're changing your plugs every 30k or so. But at 100k, save yourself the frustration.

I have modified my 2007 2 Ltr Duratec engine with re-enforcing the bottom end, fitting Raceline cams and throttle bodies increasing the output to around 205bhp. My question is do you recommend that I use the standard plugs as identified in the video or something else. The original plugs are still in the car and when i checked them yesterday there is not much left of the centre electrode and the gap was 130 thou so thought it was time for a change and that there maybe is an alternative plug. The engine is fitted to a Lotus 7 replica.

To prevent cross threading I have always gone backwards slowly and with little pressure when I hear the click that's the two in threads dropping into place and I go forward slowly you should feel the threads bite as soon as you go forward. I have done this many times to prevent cross threading especially with something as delicate as aluminum threads.

This is probably the best video on how to change spark plugs on a Focus, period! When i changed mine today on a 2011 Focus, i noticed plugs 2 and 3 were a little bit rusty on the hex part where you torque them. Also, i could see some liquid inside these 2 cylinders with a flashlight. It was on top of these 2 pistons that i could see the liquid and on the threads of the spark plug. The other two cylinders and spark plugs (1and4) were fine, normal wear. The liquid looked like a mix of windshield washer fluid and coolant mostly. I am considering a head gasket failure or a cracked head... Otherwise this car starts and drives fine. If the valve cover was faulty, could it create this kind of mess? I am puzzled with this one. Thank you!
@Da5hiz
@Da5hiz 7 жыл бұрын
If the vehicle still runs great then my best guess is that the liquid was fuel from the intake or compression stroke.

+Diego Meneses check the engine mounts first. lot of reasons it could be vibrating, if this is happening during acceleration mgiht be a fuel issue or could be a tire that wasnt tightened correctly. or an axle. could be a million things does the vibration stop when at a stop light or parked?

Thanks for the video; have some questions: 1. What is the socket size for the plugs ? 5/8 or 13/16 ? 2. After the plugs are extracted, you sent compressed air to clean the threads; wouldn't it cause any tiny debris to fall back to the engine and damage the engine ? 3. Those grease for threads and boots are really necessary ? Are all mechanics using them when plugs are changed ? 4. If I do the change myself; can I skip those application of grease ?
@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco 7 жыл бұрын
1) 5/8"2)No the cylinder and threads are cleaned at the same time with the compressed air creating a high pressure area nothing is falling into the cylinder.3)Anti Seize can be skipped the new plugs are plated but will still gall coming out next time.4)Dielectric grease is a must.

I don't recommend removing the electrical connectors unless you absolutely have to. I did this on the first one and when I went back to clip it on it wasn't clicking in. So I lifted on the tab and it broke off. Probably because it's made of plastic and the engine heat has made it brittle.

Great video! Looking forward to more Focus related ones Recently changed the plugs for my 2010 with 75K, I did notice one plug feels a bit "sticky" while threading in, will that cause problem later on? I used the "old school" method to start the thread, a piece of 3/8 hose grab the boot end of spark plug, and threaded in by hand. I did torqued them to spec. Didn't use anti-seize though
@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco 10 жыл бұрын
As long as it threads in and tightens down you should be ok. I noticed the anti seize from the factory still on the threads in the head can make them a bit hard to turn by hand.

@simonp347 10 жыл бұрын
FordTechMakuloco Thanks for the reply! I just went back to check the workshop manual, Ford did call for dielectric grease on the end of boots, but did not mention putting anti-seize on thread. I know anti-seize will make my life much easier the next time when changing the spark plugs, but always wondering how effective will it be. Any insights from your experience?
@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco 10 жыл бұрын
Anti seize on the threads of spark plugs going into and cylinder head is a good idea but especially on aluminum heads because of galvanic corrosion. The new spark plugs are supposedly coated with a nickel alloy composition which makes anti seize not totally necessary but who is to say which ones are or aren't? So I just put a light coat on as a force of habit and then I will never have a problem.

tjamison36 There is no wires on this engine. If you have the older zetec engines the Ford wire sets come pre installed together so they just push in.

vK ProdigY uuuggghhhh were both on the same page, I own a 09 focus and also and I don't want the DRL ( for reasons of my own) I don't need another person preaching to me about the importance of DRL. But im looking for answers online and apparently there is this pcm that only the ford dealership can turn on or off through there IDS tool. Reason why our focus have DRL and other focus 08-11 don't have them is because some were built in Canada and there is a law that cars built in Canada must have DRL. The rest were built in Mexico. Have you figured it out yet? I would like to know myself.

+vK ProdigY These cannot be turned off like others it is PWM so no separate fuse-If the SJB is configured for Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) , this feature illuminates the low beam headlamps at a reduced intensity when the following conditions exist: The ignition switch is in the RUN position. The headlamp switch is in the OFF position. The transmission is not in PARK (P) (automatic transaxle). The parking brake is not applied (manual transaxle). The DRL is not a programmable parameter for this veh

Where is head temperature sensor? Ford Focus 2010 2nd generation North American SE. The problem arose when I had a leak in the heat radiator, I put some special matter into the coolant liquid, the leak disappeared. I wonder could this stuff make an effect on the sensor? Will it help if I purge the system?

the 2.0l duratec uses a timing chain setup and there is no set replacement interval.

Yes the earlier zetec and spi did use a timing belt that had to be changed at 120k miles, all the new duratec 2.0 have chain.

This is awesome! I nearly freaked when i saw there was oil around my sparkplugs on top of my engine! but i'll just change em. Hay i'm having another issue: -bout a year ago: my 2008 ford focus overheated, had no coolant, the heater stopped working until i replaced a bunch of hoses, one of the hoses that lead to the radiator literally fell off when i touched it. -present day: heater blows hot as hell!! and i can see a leak dripping onto the pavement, now creating a small puddle. It's coolant. My coolant runs out every two or three days after being filled completely. My car does not run hot. It has 120k on it. I can't find a leaky hose anywhere, but can see some of my hoses are wet. Can smell antifreeze upon opening my hood. Sometimes it seems to have trouble switching gears. The mph will go up, while the rpm stays at zero, and then bumps back up where it should be. While this goes on, it has a momentary stall, drives shaky, and the check engine light comes on. thoughts?
@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco 9 жыл бұрын
Yes get the check engine light codes read at auto zone, and get the cooling system pressure tested, or clean off engine compartment with a hose let dry and run engine at idle to hot and pressurized and look for the leaks very close.

If there is oil by the spark plugs you will need to replace the valve cover gasket or have new misfires.
@ashleywest6212

FordTechMakuloco Thank you! Someone suggested the pressure testing, and now i have a second opinion(: only thing is the check engine light goes off after my car has it's little episode... will it still read it? (they probably arent very expensive, those valve cover gasket things...?)

Do not use any anti-seize its not needed at all for spark plugs they are already rust proof.

Did you ever find out what the miss fire was...Worse case it could be a warn camshaft and one of the valves is not seating right or to put it better a bit out of time. I use to see that problem on old MG cars

I am attempting to replace the plugs on 2006 2.0 l ford fusion. I started to loosen plug and it was very tight. I was afraid it might break off,(seen your other videos on this disaster) so I was wondering if one should use any penetrating product? Car had quit running completely and wouldn't turn over, but lights worked. It finally started and ran fine. Had codes read and it gives a U0100, which is lost communication with drivetrain, no specific thing to check for that. I'm thinking possible misfire and caused computer glitch. Also had P0128 code, which I think is thermostat, seems to be common problem with this engine. Little oil around one plug, others dry. Can't tell it's misfiring now, starts up good. Appreciate any thoughts on this, I need to get my new truck back from wife! lol
@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco 9 жыл бұрын
David Bowd I would put wd-40 down in there yes. Some are scary tight but take them out by hand and be slow about it and the threads will be ok. The P0128 is definitely the thermostat very common on these just be sure to vacuum fill or follow the bleed procedure exactly or you will have an overheat situation after the fact. If you have oil around the one plug now is a good time to replace the valve cover gasket also. The oil around the plugs can actually cause misfires.
