Going to be doing this job with my son tomorrow. I've done plenty of valve cover gaskets over the years, but not much work on Fords, and never a gasket on a plastic valve cover, so a bit of a new experience for me. Your video certainly helps me to familiarize myself with the procedure, and what things I will need to move out of my way to get good access.

This is a super great video for replacing that valve cover gasket! For those back wire retaining clips, they get super brittle because of the constant heat up and cool down of the engine with them sitting right above the exhaust manifold. Plus, ultraviolet light like from the sun is really bad on plastic too. I ended up replacing both of my plastic retaining clips with rubber cushioned metal clamps, 4 x 1/4" lock washers, and 4 x 6M-1.0 nuts, it's a pretty cheap alternative and shouldn't be as susceptible to breaking like the plastic ones are. Thanks again for a great informative video!

Really great video!!! Just bought an 05 2.0 with a 114,000 for a beater. Took home from used car lot and ran into the exact same thing. Started pulling the non oem plugs out to change with motorcraft and the last cylinder boot had oil. Not as bad as you. When pulling the plug that oil went into the cylinder. I was able to get 80% out and reinstalled the old plugs and fired up. Smoked for about 20 seconds and cleared. Ordered the gasket and will install new plugs once the gasket is installed. Thanks again for an informative video!!!

Tackled this today with help from your video. I was able to buy just the boots at Advance Auto for about $5/pc. Gave me an excuse to get a small torque wrench for inch pounds, but man it didn't feel like much. I probably would have way over done it by using the German standard Goodentight. Thanks for the videos!

Recently completed this myself for the first time & thought the exact same thing regarding the torque. I actually used a larger torque wrench for foot-pounds & did the conversion. I must have checked like 3-4 different sources to make sure it wasn't a mistake bc to me it really felt like there was still a lot of slack left.

A few other tips that helped me: 1. You might need to use a screw driver to LIGHTLY finesse the valve cover itself loose. Mine was on there pretty good, but once I cracked the seal open it came off easy. 2. You can rent a torque ratchet at Auto Zone. $50 deposit that they give back when you return it within 90 days. 3. I ALWAYS flag any plug that I disconnect with painters tape and I label and number them. It only takes a few minutes to do and it makes reassembly stress free and super easy.

Question. I did this job with the help over your video for my mothers 09 focus S. Thank you so much btw. The question I have is that her car is still really rough idling and I am afraid the pvc valve being clogged somehow caused the gaskets to prematurely break. Is this possible? Also where is the location of the pvc at? Is it on the top right corner of the valve cover where the tube was unhooked? Some help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you again!

Great how to. Thanks! Add me to the list of leaky valve cover gaskets needing replacement. Went to change my plugs today and 3 of the 4 plug ports had oil. I removed the plugs for now (some oil got into the cylinder...will try and remove that before I put the new plugs in) and will take the valve cover off soon to replace the gaskets. Regarding the Ultra Black Permatex gasket compound, the instructions say let it set for an hour before fully torquing down the valve cover. Not sure if it matters that much, but thought I'd mention it.
@TheJuanSolid
@TheJuanSolid 4 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about this. I did what the instructions said and put the two globs then immediately seated the valve cover and hand tightened gradually in the order linked. I waited a bit more then an hour and torqued it down in proper order. I did check it over a week later and still no leak at the seams. I am going to keep checking because it seems to me if the rtv hardens enough it could cause a tiny gap where the gasket, rtv, and metal meet when you torque it down. I wonder if the 1 hour wait before final torque is specifically when there is no other gasket being used. If no one hears back from me assume there was still no leak detected at the seams or around the rtv.
@boabm6522
@boabm6522 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheJuanSolid the wait is so the compound sets enough that it acts like a gasket itself and not just squeeze out.
@TheJuanSolid

@@boabm6522 Thanks! Makes sense. I am concerned in this application though because that's a gasket on a gasket, something I was always told is bad, like double gasketing a oil filter by accident. I can say this never leaked for me from the install procedure I noted above.

Just did this yesterday on my 2010 Focus. Two driver's side plug holes filled with oil. One on end was to the top. Anyhoo, new plugs and gasket, 80% of rough idle gone so coil packs next in line. Wet rubber boots were a little chubby. Side note. Leaking cover gaskets on a 2005 Subaru Outback actually displayed marks on the spark plug, a distinct brown line, where the spark was traveling down the outside of the plug into the block.

It's a good video, would make one suggestion though I wouldn't use a rag to wipe the gasket surface or push down near the timing chain because the rags deposit lint they don't want to get into the engine and ultimately end up in the oil pickup screen, I rebuilt transmissions for 40 years in many times I saw do-it-yourselfers wipe parts with rags and you although you can't see it once they filled it with fluid and started the thing all the lint got sucked up into the filter and I saw many times where it actually plugged the filter up. the valve cover operation probably wouldn't put that much lint into the engine but I think I would use paper towels just to avoid any possibility of lint contamination

Sometimes, it shuts off right away... sometimes it runs for 10 -20 seconds then shudder and shuts off.... sometimes it doesn't... sometimes, I managed to shut it off with the key removed by simply hitting the door lock/unlock button in the radio console.... any ideas what could be the root cause....an relay stuck closed or an ignition switch... or something else? A question: I was doing the plugs on my 05 2.0 and found oil in the wells. None on top in the trough, and none around the valve cover. AFAIK the car went its 12 year 85k mile life on those original plugs, and the plugs themselves looked OK. Is it OK to watch this problem and see how severe it is before doing this work? I feel like I've got the potential to create more problems than what could have been a very, very slow oil leak into a few of the plug wells. Also: amazing video. I've watched a few of yours and they are easy to follow and really well shot! And this is coming from a massive critic of this kind of work. So thanks!

Quick question, how did you remove the fuel line clip? I’ve tried and I’m almost ready to take off the valve cover but the clip keeps snapping back into place :/

Thanks for this video. I just got done doing this job on a same year Focus and this video helped out a bunch. It took me several hours with getting the oil out of the spark plug wells and cleaning everything up. I also changed the spark plugs and coil boots. Car seems to idle smoother than before but I didn't run it long so that the sealant could set.

How did you get the oil out of the wells? Someone said to run the engine with the spark plugs removed to blow out the rest of the oil after soaking up with a paper towel but wouldn’t that allow sludge to get into the engine?
@Mr2004MCSS
@Mr2004MCSS Жыл бұрын
@@tylermitchell8927 I used a turkey baster to get the majority of the oil out and then used paper towels to soak up the rest. I would not take the spark plug out with oil still in the hole.

Used this video as my guide and got it done. My hiccups/advice for others: 1) I got sprayed with gas when removing the line since the engine was hot. Would have gone bad if it hit something hot like exhaust manifold. Need to at least wrap rags around it before removing. 2) New gasket wouldn't stay in place, kept falling out. I used grease to hold it in place. 3) Some of that silicone you scrape off had been in a bad spot and seemed to deform the lip around the valve cover sealing surface on mine.

Off topic (but could be related) Do you know the actual part number for the pcv valve and hose for the 2010 model? Thank you! This might be a reason why the gasket of the cover needs replacing.

Still recommend that Bosch PS41-2A small impact driver or have you replaced it/upgraded? I'm looking for a small and handy like that. For use on my car and home.

I competed this same task on my 2008 Ford Focus SE. I have 2 questions. I did everything else spot on but there are two concerns I have. First concern is I did not use sealant when reattaching the cover . Is that a big deal? And my second concern is there was a very small amount of residual oil in the plug seats, is that a big deal?

xD I just did my valve cover gasket watching a KZfaq video. First time pulling anything with that much shit. Was intimidating at first, but really easy to do. There was so much oil in those little reservoirs that you couldn’t even see the spark plug. Oddly though, it never caused interference. And yes, motor craft doesn’t sell boots separately. The foreman told me that you don’t need to replace the coils unless they fail.

I agree replaceing the coil is not needed, but I would replace the rubber still, you can get aftermarket ngk ones (I got them from Rock Auto). I cleaned a bunch of oil off my old boots and placed them in the spare parts bin. A week later I was organizing and found beaded up oil all over them (including inside). Seemed like the rubber absorbed oil and expelled it over time, sort of like condensation but oil. I just checked the bin again now and there was a light visible film of oil over the boots up to where they were soaking in oil. It's a shame motorcraft won't sell just the boot and spring but I would definitely spend $12 to $15 for new rubber boots after a valve cover gasket change to ensure a clean connection. The ngk spring will not twist on to the coil like the OEM motorcraft ones. I ended up reusing the old springs because I did not like the idea of them being loose in there with just compression holding them together (probably fine). I also had a small scratch, maybe start of a crack, in a coil so I replaced that one only just to be safe. I would reuse that coil but I am very hesitant on reusing any of these boots unless I was in a severe pinch.

I did this on my 05 Focus 2.0L last year, but don't think I put the dab of sealant on those two spots by the cover. There is a little leakage in those spots, do you think it would be worth it to pull the cam cover back off and dab some sealant on there? Great video BTW, wish I had seen it last year!
