I'm a RHFH dominant player, and I would really like to see some comparisons of spin rates produced for forehand throws using different grips. Single finger vs two-finger, and a variety of 2 finger grips would be a cool comparison.

Interesting! Last year I switched from a single finger to a double finger grip and it increased the distance I could throw, and my discs behave more stable than before. But my 2 finger grip is probably a little different. I rest the pads of my fingers against the inner rim rather than the flight plate, and I don't tuck the disc all the way into the webbing of my hand between the forefinger and thumb. It just rests of my forefinger.

Great video as always guys! Some ideas for BH spin testing: Straight wrist on the hit vs. "slinging it"/ flinging / cupped (I hope this one makes sense) Deeper pocket = more spin? Holding nose down vs. rolling to a nose down at the hit Hyzer vs Anhyzer

Keeping the wrist looser seems to increase the spin on my Techdisc numbers vs trying to keep it stiff so the disc snaps out at the hit.

On the backhand I'd love to see how grip variation and thumb position on the disc can change spin rate. I get so much advice from the old timers at the course that all seems to contradict each other.

Cues I've seen work for spin, but you might want to test: 1) deep pocket vs shallow pocket 2) wide rail vs straight reach back 3) curling the wrist in the power pocket vs keeping it neutral 4) imagine you're throwing just the rim of the disc, applying force to the inside rim BTW the advance ratio is the relationship between spin and speed. A good backhand number is 50% and a good forehand number is 30%. I don't the advance ratio is worth chasing, specifically, but increasing the spin as much as possible is still important.

I would love to see the data from a forehand tech disc session with Ricky. It seems like he generates an incredible amount of spin, even by touring pro standards. I've heard him talk a little bit about firmly jamming the disc into his hand before he throws, and you can see him do it anytime he is about to throw a forehand off the tee, but I wonder if there is anything else specifically related to generating spin that we can learn from his form. Maybe you guys could do a video breakdown sometime or try to get an interview with him this year?

Can you look into this with the glitch, spore, sonic, etc? Or maybe just putters. Probably one of the craziest examples I’ve seen of people thinking a disc is floppy when they are absolutely not if they get spin. I’ve seen an ultimate style forehand with the glitch be thrown well but when people try to throw putters with the forehand they can’t because they’re trying to throw them like drivers. Would also be interested if there was a way to measure “off axis torque”, flipping by rolling the wrist.

I would be interested to see how the stats change when the palm is supinated, neutral or pronated in reach back as well as halfway supinated and pronated. Also, supinated reach back to pronated release vs pronated reach back to* supinated release. Or if that even affects flight at all or just players preference.

For spin, you might explore how power pocket zone affects it. Clavicle height vs belly button height. Find out which is the optimum.

BH spin idea: mess around with wrist angles on pull through. For example, try a neutral wrist where your palm/top of the disc are more or less facing your chest, and rotate wrist to desired angle at release. Kind of like Gannon or Simon do sometimes.

Danny Lindahl in his most recent videos RHBH appeared to have an outward flick of his wrist at peak reach back. I tried this when I was developing my LHBH (Right arm was injured) it seemed to produce more spin and skip. But it was LHBH, I never incorporated it RHBH after recovery. But it seemed I got more RPM with this flick technique.

@bbd1254
@bbd1254 5 ай бұрын
The distance calculations are off. Always have been for some reason. The other data is good though. I wish that they would have an option to train the disc. Like go into a field and throw it a bunch of times, and you tell the disc the actual distance so it can learn better. Probably just way too many variables to get it accurate. (Wind speed, wind direction, temperature, elevation, moisture in the air, etc…)

When I tested my tech disc in the field and against the same mold without the tech, it actually measured within about 10’ of the Udisc number. I do think I throw differently into open field vs wailing on a net.

This makes me think of a video iceberg tv did a while back saying you could get a better flight on a putter or mid (i.e. get the disc to turn) using a fan grip. I guess this means you are putting more speed and less spin?
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf 5 ай бұрын
Probably the opposite. Better speed for the spin you’re throwing i would guess
@isaknilsson71
@isaknilsson71 5 ай бұрын
So let me get this straight: I've seen disc golf articles/science estimate spin numbers based on speed by the simple rule "let's assume the disc rolls out of the backhand throw as if rolling along the flight path". Would that equate to a "100%" number for your tests? In that case, this rule of thumb must vastly overestimate the spin if you measure about half of that with your tests. Would you agree?

To me, when I watch Wysoki, he ssems to curl the disc more during his backhand throw. Could this generate more spin.

Not surprised. BH holds a line much longer. FH dumps quicker due to less gyroscopic stability. I use fan grip when I want a putter to dump faster because I generate less spin.

The advance ratio is pretty clear in the manual, it's a comparison between spin and speed. They say 50% is good for backhand, 30% for forehand A roller has 100% ratio, as the disc is rolling at the same rate it is spinning (at the disc's edge). The formula they list is spin times disc radius divided by speed. (no units given so it's hard to figure out the exact formula) Spin X radius gives us a linear velocity at the disc's edge (converting RPM to MPH) and that is divided by the disc's speed to compare spin and speed. This is all required, because you can't measure spin in MPH, as it changes depending on how wide the disc is, so first you have to convert from spin to speed at the disc's edge.

PRetty much what I expected. Now if you have too much time on your hands, you could check the same but at approach speed. I feel like you can generate spin on slow FH throws easier with just a flick of your wrist compared to actual throwing motion of the BH.
