As a Filipino, I can add some characters of Filipino Drinkers: 1. The Jokers, makes jokes and keep the group laughing. 2. Guitarist, do the music if the karaoke is not available. 3. Drama King/Queen, who always cry about their problems or break ups; most of the time, thry sre the reason why they gather for a drink. 4. Linguist, suddenly become english spoken or sometimes can speak baby slung words.

Sharing the same glass goes way back to pre Spanish colonialism. We call it "Sanduguan". Sanduguan was an ancient ritual in the Philippines used to seal a friendship or treaty, or to validate an agreement. The contracting parties would cut their hands and pour their blood into a cup filled with liquid, such as wine, and drink the mixture.

If you noticed, among a drinking session around Pinoys the unspoken rule is *"Thou shall not Pass"* and that is why the shot glass gets passed around to ensure you are not cheating your shot by saying "pass", and it's a last man standing kinda event. Everybody goes home drunk, some throw up, some get picked up by their angry wives, some fall asleep on their seats, some sing while controlling their gag reflexes lol, some cry to a former love affliction incidence. But the bottomline is everybody had fun and had a bit of bonding with whoever was present in the session. 😁

Imagine a drinking session with your own cups/glasses, you won't talk to each and will just mind your own businesses. I experienced it before and it's so boring. You won't get a chance to talk to each other. But if you do it the Filipino way, you can like "Hey it's your turn now". Then it's up to you on how you keep the conversation going on.

This video brings back so many fun memories of my younger days in the Philippines! One time after an "inuman" me and my friends were staggering back to our homes late at night and two of them fell into a drainage ditch on the side of the road. After much cursing from them and much laughing from the rest we all managed to get home though. And we did another "inuman" again a few days after just to poke fun at the guys who fell in the ditch 😂 Fun times.

The "first shot" goes to the unknowns or we call it, the "anitos" as a sign of respect to their presence. We give back to nature what we receive, that sort of thing. It is in the psyche of every Filipinos who drink. We offer them that first shot. Sometimes, when one of the friends have gone on the next world, we do honor him also with that one glass filled with wine. It stays on the table until the end of the session.

There are a lot more different characters in a "Inuman" other than the ones that have been mentioned, such as, "the crow caller": this is the person who always vomits. "the crying lady": this person is guaranteed to always cry and share their broken heart. "the telephone man": this person is the one who is hated by the group because he is always in the phone. "the fire man": the one who is always leave to take a pee. and lastly "the boat man": also known as the "bangkero", is the life of the inuman, always have the jokes and story for the group to enjoy...

Can't blame you being skeptic with the shared glass thing. I had the same thoughts in my first experience of it, but the consecutive session gave me a different view to it. It's pretty much a social camaraderie thing, most commonly done among close friend groups or barkada.

The small portion thrown away before serving the alcohol started in the province where local liquors were served. Local liquors were not regulated and can result to poisoning. The belief was the impurities would float, thus, that's the portion thrown out before drinking starts. We call it gin bulag (alcohol poisoning).

Actually there are more types of Filipino drinkers to be included: * the cook- the one who usually cooks the pulotan *the transformer- from a strait guy transforms into gay when intoxicated, this cannibalistic creature usually preys the "sleeping beauty" to avoid being compromise (no haters but it happens). *the flash- the one who constantly shifting seats in the the circle by either avoiding additional tagay or to have more tagay(haha... Bulaos). *the barber/story teller/joker- the one who talks much, naturally they brought humor for the circle specially when karaoke is not available *drama queen or king- cries or get emotional after get drunk. this creatures are Broken hearted they need advice and comfort * the swimming champion- the one who sleeps with his own 🤮, this creature is the cousin of "the sleeping beauty" except that they are more messy, *etc. It's more fun in the Philippines!

a little advise to our foreign friends. If in any way you were invited to drink with filipinos, ofcourse you can't say no. What you can do is to just drink the alcohol they're offering, or make an excuse. Tell them you have work to do or meeting a friend or whatever, it's not disrespect to reject, just be polite. Sometimes they force you and when that happens, just walk away.

If everyone here doesnt know, sharing a glass is called SANDUGO or bloodpact. The portuguese discoverer Magellan shared sandugo (literal one. A blood pact where individuals slash their wrists and bind them together as a gesture that theyre officially welcomed to the community or simply, considered a friend). this was nice, aside from the fact I am a Bogart fan. love how you totally relate to his drinking ethics 101 video. 😍 language trivia: it is quite okay if someone within the circle passes on one or more round. it is very common, true, to have someone else have the shot which that person passed on. we call it "salo" [sa-lo'] (literal English translation: catch). meaning the act of someone covering up for you so you can skip your task, in this case, the shot you cannot take because you feel the alcohol having its effect already. 😂

Being a "Drunken Master" is just as much about being able to properly pace yourself as it is being extremely tolerant. Remember to take long (30-60 days) breaks from drinking! It's a great way to spot alcohol dependency early on so you can nip it in the bud, and the tolerance break is also beneficial since you get more bang for your buck when drinking if you aren't super duper tolerant!

When I was in the engineering university in the 90s, I didn't like the tagay drinking system (my dad is a physician and I read his books). So, everytime I drink with my group of friends, I convinced everyone to have our own individual glass. We became the odd group in our uni as everybody else were doing the tagay. My group felt so cultured that by the time we were graduating , we were already wearing monocles. We're still broke though because we're students.

Growing up in Philippines and having experienced this type of drinking ritual ,some sneaky drinker would start spitting their drink into the chaser water just to prevent getting morbidly drunk. Drinking from a communal shot glass is a thing in the PH. Myself and booze friends however had to bring our own shot glasses (and chaser cups; though we have a stock of disposable red beer cups ready) during the first few weeks of easing the pandemic restrictions. And wiiiith alcohol comes an alcohol sanitiser spray bottle, and solo plates for pulutan :D It's nice we can have more booze weekends nowadays as all restrictions have been eased. Also that part to evade the potential of getting stabbed with an icepick? That is probably due to the culture of taking a shot offered by a group of people drinking on the sides of the streets or by sari-sari stores back in the day, and refusing a shot kinda sends snobby vibes and may trigger ire. While I haven't encountered getting poked with an icepick when I refused a tagay (e.g. heading to or from work, etc.), I know a few people who got the stabby end of a metal implement when they, um, said 'pass' on the shot. 💦

As a foreigner i was never a fan of glass sharing, it’s just weird, it’s not a competition, people have different tolerance levels, different drunkenness desires, different drinking speeds. The focus becomes about the alcohol instead of just focusing on having a good time. I like a lot of Philippine traditions but I think the west does drinking better on this one.

we think of it as anti cheating method.when we are in a session,a yes to an invitation is like a commitment for camaraderie a sign of bortherhood that a person will go along with you especially if one has a prob, unless its not that exclusive for solid friends.it is not mandatory though.you can say politely that you dont want to drink too hard and thats perfectly fine its not they will force you you can even request for your own glass.
