When I took my family of 4 to the PI for the first time I had to plan it out so that whatever cultural shock they might experience it would be gradual. I planned all the logistics and discussed it with them. i was born and raised in Panay in Iloilo specifically, after finishing college I migrated to the US, thats was over 40 years ago. But the time I took the family back home as a complete unit the two boys were adults. So they were quite self aware of the difference in the culture and social sphere of life there. So what I did was stayed in the most westernized hotels in Manila and Makati and when we arrived in Iloilo City, we stayed in a couple of hotels in the new section of the city most tourists would use. It worked because even with a few observations of the difference in the lifestyle there, most of the needs of my family was used to were met satisfactorily. After a few days of adjustment we started going to places in the interior part of my province where I was born and also in coastal towns were my father came from. So gradually they experienced rural life. I have farms in these places and to them it felt like treading into the wilderness. The locals made them feel welcome and we went to many beach resorts in the island. Life in Iloilo is a far cry from other metro cities. So many places to explore especially resorts without the stress of maddening crowd where ever we went. It made my American born children and my husband enjoy our trip which turned into more return trips and now my kids are dual citizens because they relish the idea of living there one day in their future. Its always safe in the part of the Philippines where I come from. We didn’t see or experience any crime during any of our travels. So yes generally speaking, its fun to live in the PI no matter who you are. Thank you for sharing your love for the Philippines. You’re awesome.

Funny how foreigners in the Philippines find it strange to go to multiple places to buy groceries and food. I on the other hand keep looking for specialty stores for each thing I want to buy where I moved to. The thought of buying everything from the nearby grocery gives me the feeling of just settling with what's available. We all learn LOL. God bless!

These two Swedish couple built their bamboo house in Siargao , I think.I’ve been following them in the past . I haven’t seen them for awhile. You guys have to remember the Philippines is not well developed yet. In the provinces , there are not too many supermarkets or grocery stores. We have the open snd wet markets. Also we have the sari sari store but limited contents. However if you live in Makati, Alabang or other well off cities, they’re more Westernized.

For sure the couple understand that. Country doesn’t do the act of adjustment right?. The couple was just giving their very direct personal experience so, what’s wrong about that? Their message was not meant to discourage or insult Filipinos or future tourists right. Try to understand their experience as we Filipinos experience in other Places or Countries too. What’s difficult about that. You sounds so territorial.

@MRS.LIM she just stating the facts , and as you mentioned that she's sounds territorial In what way? I didn't find any sentence here that she was being territorial and she actually wasn't. when I read every single words that she wrote here there is a word that it's up to you if you can manage to adjust or not and that's not sounds territorial was it?

Totally agree. Fruits and vegetables here in the US are laced with pesticides to keep pest and insects away and chemicals to keep its shelf life longer. Now we even have to deal with genetically engineered fruits and we have no idea of the long-term effect its going to have to our bodies.

Filipinos is known as hospitable but even I am a Filipino I am aggree with what this Sweden woman said that during lining up in cue in Sweden they are strict to follow the line and it is rude to insert or ahead of any person who is in the line. I am also a victim when I was in the bank we have a longline and a woman who is not pregnant nor senior citizen insert ahead of me as I about to insert my card it is term in Bisaya way batasan or no good manners. May it will not happen again. I am happy they found friendliness with Filipinos and with warm hearts we always welcome our visitors.

Firstly, we cannot please everyone. 2ndly, Filipinos are not used to please any foreigner. It's Filipino's instinct to be friendly to everyone. Even to our own locals, we're friendly and nice to them too. And if you don't feel liking Filipinos, the way we treat people around us, esp foreigners, it's no longer our problems to problematizing it. Maybe they've just experienced a not so friendly situations when they arrived here. But anyway, Thank you for your enlightening comments for Filipinos. Have a great day to you!

Going to different places just to buy stuff has been part of the culture. In the province, since most don't have any grocery shops, you have to go to the wet market. And yes, the smell is there, and it has been like that ever since. That's why mom took me to the wet market at an early age so I get used to the smell, the crowd, and also, to visit some of my relatives who were selling their produce, such as one aunt of mine from my mom's side that sells dried fish.

i think we should respect what other foreigners are saying about PH. they have different experiences with different Filipinos so i am not shocked if they will have negative things to say as you know people have different attitude. i remembered a youtuber who goes to Guimaras Island then he said that he can't find a good beach there simply because he did not do some research. a lot of beautiful beaches there but the one they choose is like the unheard beach then it left them an impression that beaches there is just normal and he seems disappointed

You go to the market to buy fish, veggies, etc because it's all fresh from the farm or fresh from the ocean, that was just harvested or came from the ocean very early in the morning. That's what I like fresh not frozen all in the foreign supermarkets.
