I've really been pushing my luck with the drivers window on the Forester. I drove the red RS through the winter and got a reminder of how bad the window motor on the Forester was in the spring. It survived most of the summer. Parting out the Impreza, I was able to retrieve a good working motor as the parts between Forester 2003-2008 and Impreza 2002-2007 are the same. Working within a door can be difficult, I won't lie. The job is usually completely blind and tools might need to be used in reverse to access hardware. Often the window regulator needs to be removed from a vehicle to change a window motor, likely Subaru's procedure is no different and this may be considered a cheat to get the job done.

This video was super valuable. Fixed my Windows motor . The hardest part was finding the right size for the Philips bit I almost stripped the screws. Thank you! PS. I did not replace mine , I repaired it . Just cleaned up a lot of rust , greased it and boom.!

Coincidentally today I did the other side(off camera) and stripped two of the screw heads. Needed to pull the regulator out to change the motor. Adds almost an hour to the job.

In my case, the brushes of the DC motor were bit worn out, so i just bent them to get a contact. It was a free and quick fix. Thanks a lot for this video!

Nice. I've repaired a couple that had the gearing seized with rust. It's nice being able to get them out without the entire regulator attached.

I'm currently dealing with this right now. I don't know if this is a "hack" or not, but if your window is up, get a small flat mirror and a piece of tape and tape it to the far side of the door and it gives you a pretty clear view of the screws. Much easier to see if you're stripping them. If the window is stuck down, like mine was, give the motor a couple healthy taps with a hammer or socket wrench. That freed mine up enough to get it back up. When the window is down, you have far less space to work.

A few ways to do it. The window will sort of jamb in place and hold itself if you fight with it. I have plastic wedges that I can stick down alongside the window. A wooded wedge for shimming will work too. Good old duct tape is another

I did it without the window collapsing, by myself, just being careful and only removing some of the screws holding the regulator in.

I haven't gotten into a sunroof on a Subaru before. If it's just a seal replacement, the glass can likely be unbolted and slid out of the regulator. If it's an open/close issue, the first thing will be to pull down the headliner to see what's going on. Good luck!

Very helpful video! my window is stuck in the closed position, so it wont go down. Auto electrician said its the regulator. Would you recommend i do both the motor and regulator or just the motor first ?

If the window went up and down smoothly before the failure, just replace the motor. Some shops won't replace one without the other.

Yes. On a Forester the right rear motor fits the drivers door

My 03 wrx driver side has broken regulator spring(and motor). Thought it was just the motor. Any way to raise the window to commute or is that flat coil spring vital? Ordered new regulator assembly as no one has regulator springs seperate. Info appreciated for daily driven ancient subie

Tapping the motor worked last week. Now sadly it doesnt, nor smashing the motor. Can fire help? /Jk

The spring is only really for assistance. If you remove the motor you should be able to pull the window up. Then just use a block of wood or tape it until you can replace the unit.

Probably pretty uncommon for the entire regulator to go bad right? Don't want to replace it if I don't have to

Subaru regulators don't usually fail. They get sloppy or even misaligned which could require replacement but don't normally slow or stop altogether.
