This is a blast from the past. I had a 2001 2.5 RS. 2300 miles before my power train warranty expired, my engine Started knocking on my way home from a backpacking trip. Apparently an exhaust valve guide fell and stuck open and hit a piston. The dealer denied my warranty. SOA regional rep sided with the dealer. It was cheaper for me to get an engine from a wrecked Subaru than to rebuild it. I tossed it in and it ran fine, for about 50 miles. I started hearing this rubbing noise and I noticed misfires. I pulled the timing cover and saw the same chewed up belt. I looked up the vin via carfax of the donor engine and saw it was in a front end collision. The tensioner pulley was loose indicating it got hit pretty hard and the bolt threads were striped. I loved that car until it became too much for me. Before getting that timing tensioner was fixed, I dreamt of giving that car a Viking funeral.

Sign me up for al 16 valves bent. This didn't happen right after he did the install. I bet this happened while under power and there were more than few revolutions before it stopped. When that tensioner finally gave way, all hell broke loose. I may know a thing or two about bent valves and doing your own timing belts. I'm 1 and 1 doing battle with timing belts. I did my first one on a VW 20V 1.8T engine and that came out really well. All factory parts and it was a simple thing to do, even though you need to basically remove or loosen up the front bumper on the 1999 Passat 1.8T. The second one I did was on a 2005 Volvo 2.4T and it didn't end well. The VW and Subaru tensioner systems are very similar and simple, the Volvo system is nuts and overly complicated. That was $3400 mistake. I got 3 of the 5 cylinders worth of exhaust valves in that one.

I was on my first road trip last summer in my subaru outback 96 with a 2.2 engine and my car suddenly lost power and was running terrible. I had just filled up the car with fuel and thought that maybe it was bad gas. The car would misfire and run terrible and then once in awhile it would run just fine for a few minutes and then bad again. I drove around 200 miles like this and had the engine inspected in a small town. The idler pulley with the gear teeth failed spectacularly and bearings were everywhere and the timing belt had jumped. I drove about 200 miles with jumped timing and it would re-time itself once in awhile going down the road. I put in a new timing belt and pulleys and the car ran just like before. Those 2.2 non interference engines are tough just like people said they were. You could not drive with jumped timing in a 2.5 especially not 200 miles

Well, it has to be at least 1 bent valve on every cylinder, and since we'll assume equal chance of exhaust and intake valves getting whacked, all the exhaust valves have a single rocker arm (double chance, since can't bend one without the other also), and that's probably a minimum of 6, let's hope for the best and go for '6' as my shot at the lottery. :D

I specialize in engine repair work at my shop. I had a 2007ish outback turbo engine that the timing belt broke, broke one of the plastic cam sprockets. I did a leakdown test and it passed, put a new sprocket on and timing belt kit and I had a slight misfire on cyl 2. Did a compression test and cyl 2 was right inline with the other cyls so Put my bore scope in and couldnt see a witness mark on piston on cyl 2 however I did see a witness mark on a piston on the other bank so I decided to pull the heads off and pull the valves and what I found was cyl 2 had one valve that was slightly bent you could not see it was bent untill i put in a drill to spin it then i could see it was slightly bent. The engine did misfire worse when it was warm so im thinking it passed a leakdown and compression test because the engine was cold and when the engine was hot the metals in the head expanded just enough to make the valve leak. I put a set of valves in it and it was all good. Ive never seen something like that before super weird.

If the belt breaks, do the valves ALWAYS get bent? I realize it's an interference engine, but wasn't sure if it's assumed that the valves always get damaged.

7 bent valves. It will be interesting to see how this plays-out.
