Using chlorine bleach, followed by letting a paste of water and baking soda dry in them, will generally take the smells out of jar tops. If you get Odoban, spray or pour a little in the top and let it sit for a while, will take the odors out. I got it by the concentrated jug and have hardly made a dent in it, and I use it all the time in spray bottles like about 1 part Odoban to 30 parts water. It is used in hospitals and will also disinfect in higher concentrations. There are vacuum chambers that you can buy,(I got one for about $20.), that will vacuum-seal most glass jars with their original lids, and I have found it very useful for dehydrated or dried herbs, vegetables, nuts or even refrigerated home pickled items.

Dawn Jenny beat me to the advice about using the sun. The tip about the quick vinegar soak requires that the soak be quick, otherwise the vinegar will deteriorate the metal cap. I have learned not to use the vinegar method because I will inevitably leave the vinegar in the cap for "just a little longer", which will lead to too long. You can leave the cap sitting upside down on the top of a window sash in the kitchen to get some sun, too. As a last note: I have noticed that stored covered jars tend to smell "stale" over time, so I store the jars with the lid loosely sitting on top of the jar, but not screwed down.

Its funny how some Dollar Trees seem to be stocked and have a wide variety of choices and some DT stores selections are not very good, shelves are often bare. I can't even recall when I've seen a selection of dry beans. Canned bean choices are a bit better, but dry, good luck. I would love to see how you enjoy eating your bean dishes Alaska Granny. Yes, it's good to be a prepper. I've been making and storing herbs for tea's lately. Sometimes I forage and find wild turkey mushrooms and elderberry (in season). I also love stinging nettle with honey and ginger. I have mixes of camomile, rose and lavender, perfect before bed. Learning to make some herbal medicines and having them on hand is another important part of prepping. I'm currently doing a black walnut detox, we can find black walnuts all over the place here in Michigan. So simple to make and once you make it, it lasts forever.

Teddy loves to snuggle you, so cute. That's a good list of longest lasting foods. Our Dollar Tree was out of beans and rice for weeks, finally had beans, rice and lentils back in stock as of last week. That's good to tell people about kidney beans, not many know that they have those toxins until they are fully cooked. I have found some of the brands of lentils and beans now seem to have more debris like tiny rocks, leaves, stems and so forth so important to check and pick them out. Good tip also about the honey, the best for you is local, raw honey. The imitation products like imitation syrup or vanilla just aren't good for us either, the more natural the better. I like to grow flowers and give to friends and family. I clean and save jars during the year so when I want to give a bouquet, they don't have to remember to return a vase and they can also reuse or recycle that jar and saves me from having to buy vases as well.

@@wasnevernurseratched439 one interesting tip I heard was if you get a scratchy or sore throat, to take some local raw honey and it can stop the soreness very quickly. The honey has very potent natural antibacterial properties. My husband tried this recently and said it worked.

I don't know how AG cleans hers, but when I save half'n'half or creamer bottles I make sure to rinse them completely out with the hottest water the very minute I use the last of the product. Then I soak them in hot soapy dish water, and if the bottle brush won't fit, I put a dishcloth into the bottle and use the handle of a wooden spoon to scrub the inside. These are some of my favorite repurposed containers because they are tall and slender, so less space taken up on the shelf, and they aren't breakable like glass jars
