This is one of the best food preservation video's on YT. You did a fantastic job of describing the products, the why's and why not's and you even included a pump demo. Most people don't even mention the fat content and what that means for shelf life. It would be nice to know how long the mason jar storage compares to Mylar bag storage. Thank you for adding the links to each site you use to order the different products. Awesome Job!

I'm 72 and live by myself, I only hit the grocery store once or twice a month, I freeze a gallon of milk in 5 quart mason jars, after it freezes I vacuum seal it and place it in gallon storage bags (bags only as insurance in case of jar breakage), I mainly use milk for cold cereal and baking, for baking I use powdered milk. I thaw out a jar of milk for the next two days usage for cereal. I've found for me 8 wks is the longest I like to use the frozen milk, freezing is a method to extend milk life over repeated trips to the store.

Girl,you sound like me,lol I love my cereal and cold milk and I freeze my milk in plastic gt. Juice jugs.They are on narrow size and fit well in my freezer.If I catch milk on sale I buy several and freeze them in my juice jugs.they do take a bit of time to thaw in fridge so I take something deep and place my milk in water for couple Hrs. and the water stays very cold as it thaws out some.Have a good day.

This will be a good way to cut my food bill, by making my own sauces and soups, and being able to stock up and store the dry version. Thank you for the information. Place milk into your trays and freeze milk in the freezer once frozen then place into freezer dryer once done then place in food processor, to turn into powder then package into jars or into milar bags . My kids used to drink a lot of milk (way, way back) but hated the powder & can so I used to use the can or powdered to dilute the fresh stuff, they never knew😉 I, Like you don't drink milk, not even in my coffee but I do use it in meals occasionally. I've tried the Nido, I personally don't like it at all, I think it is creamy but tastes weird and leaves a funky after taste. I made myself a mini chicken pie yesterday and want a milk sauce, the powdered worked perfectly. I'm currently using Anthonys powdered organic whole milk because I found it on sale, I personally think it's one of the best I've tried but it's pricey.

Several months ago, I tried but could not find reliable info anywhere on how to preserve powdered whole milk for long (12-18 month) storage). You answered all of my questions beautifully. After watching your video, I went ahead and confidently increased my Azure Standard powdered whole milk order! Thank you very much! PS: I have a brake bleeder as well as a Food Saver with attachments. Hint: I noticed lots of times, a regular Mason jar lid doesnt want to seal after the air is sucked out…particularly with the Foodsaver attachment. You pull off the attachment; and, oftentimes, the regular lid comes off, too. So, I took a regular lid and used a nail to punch a hole in the middle. I take the lid with the hole and put it on top of a regular lid - both stacked on top of the jar. Then cover both lids with the regular lid attachment. After vacuum sealing, remove the attachment; and the top lid…the one with the hole…falls off and is reusable; but the lid underneath stays on.

After opening a vacuum sealed jar, do you put on a new lid before resealing? In all my understanding of those lids, once you vacuum seal with them they can not be used to vacuum seal again as the seal is essentially broken and will not seal properly after. I can actually attest to that after using them for some LTS items. Very informative and valuable info on the powdered milk storage and I like your system for once a month groceries. I'm going to work towards that since I now live in a more rural area and stores are not as convenient to get to.

No, I reuse the same lid. I've been vacuum sealing (and resealing) items for 5+ years now, and I haven't experienced an issue with reused lids resealing. But I do know that lid quality varies significantly. Hmm, interesting. Thank you for sharing your experience and commenting! :)

I saw a lady on KZfaq put the milk in brown paper lunch bags and then tuck it under then vacuum seal the bag. I did that and it works great. On jars I use unbleached coffee filters. I take a lid and cut around the lid with scissors and add about a 1/4 of an inch. I get two filters. I place it on top of the powder and then vacuum seal it.

Cook some ground sausage. Once thoroughly cooked, scoop out all but about 1/2 cup of the sausage. Leave the grease in the skillet. Add about 4 Tbs of flour and some salt and pepper to taste, and mix well into the grease & sausage. Pour in 2 cups of milk, let simmer, stirring almost constantly. Cook until it's as thick as you want it to be. Taste & add more seasonings if needed.

I read all the same things as you but decided to try it anyway. That was 3 years ago, and I haven’t had any issues. The only thing I’ve noticed is that my homemade taco seasoning gets clumpy from time to time, but that’s nothing a quick mix with a fork can’t handle. 🙂 If you try it, I definitely recommend using glass Mason jars. I wouldn’t do this with the plastic containers that most spices come in. I think glass is key to making this work.

Is it alright to use oxygen absorbers together with food grade silica gel absorbers for grain in mylar bags? Does the bag need to look like it was vacuumed sealed at the end of the process or can the contrnts be a little loose? Thank you 💐
@foodprepguide
@foodprepguide 9 күн бұрын
You don't want to use oxygen absorbers with most silica gel packs because oxygen absorbers actually need a bit of moisture in order to activate. The silica gel pack can cause your oxygen absorber to not activate. However, there are oxygen absorbers that are "self-reactive." With that type, you can use alongside a silica gel pack. In a mylar bag with a working, active oxygen absorber, it will look vacuum sealed. If it doesn't, that's a sign that the O2 absorber is either no longer working or that it's too small for the size bag that it's being used in - in which case, you could just add an additional O2 absorber. Hope that helps! :)
@LadyMaryanne
@LadyMaryanne 8 күн бұрын
Thank you, for your time & explanation it absolutely helps a lot. Lately I started using silica gel packets along with the oxygen absorbers and I noticed that the mylar bags are not vacuum sealing looking. I think it's because of what you said that the oxygen absorbers need a little bit of moisture to activate. Thank you very much for your time in advance, I will try it with only oxygen absorbers again like I used to. 💐🌸🌻

If I want to buy powdered milk from Azure for emergencies (preparedness) what’s the best method of storing this, and not letting it go bad? If only lasting 1-2 years, do I just use it throughout the year?
@foodprepguide
@foodprepguide 5 ай бұрын
If opting for whole milk powder, I’d do the method discussed in this video and plan on using it within 2 years. However for long-term storage for emergencies, where you don’t want to use it unless you have to (and don’t want to worry about using it within 2 years), then the best option is instant, non-fat milk powder. It lasts much longer & I’d store it in Mylar bags with an oxygen absorber. (It just doesn’t taste that great, imho.)
@j.b.1855
@j.b.1855 5 ай бұрын
I would ask yourself what kind of preparedness your into. I love Azure's products but I won't buy very much powdered milk since I'd rather get milk locally or the store. If you believe the world is going to go to crap and not return then maybe powder whey milk from my patriot supply (or others) with a 25 yr shelf life is an option. Is it organic or gonna taste better then azure's? I highly doubt that, but it's an amazing long term shelf life. If your prepping for smaller scale emergencies then small periodic purchases from Azure and doing your own storage is the way to go.

@foodprepguide
@foodprepguide Ай бұрын
Most brands of oxygen absorbers require a little bit of moisture to activate. For those types, a desiccant will cause the O2 absorber to not activate and therefore not work. That said, there are some O2 absorbers that are "self reactive," and those will work just fine in the presence of a desiccant pack.

Vacuum sealing + oxygen absorber is a little redundant. It's not that it wouldn't work; it's just that it's not necessary to do both. I can get a 2-year shelf life from a vacuum sealed mason jar with no O2 absorber. However, if you want to shoot for more than 2 years, that would probably be a good plan! 🙂
