That's a lovely idea. Now let's do the math. I live in Germany, where we have a total of 1400-1900 hours of sun each year, which yields approx. 1000 kWh of energy per installed 1 kW peak. So with this solution (1.2 kW peak) I could get 1200 kWh per year, if the panel was open all-day, 365 days. Charging loss is about 10%, so usable energy would be 1080 kWh. I'm currently using 17 kWh/100km, so I'd get an extra 1700 km of range each year, or 140 km a month. If I only manage to catch half of the sunlight (since the car is not always parked outside, or outside of shadows due to buildings, or because I'm actually driving the car) which might be more realistic, that's an extra 70 km a month. That amounts to savings of 3.70 Euros each month, when compared to our usual home charging. At 3000 Dollars, it will amortize after 60 years (but only if I take the effort of unfolding and storing away the panel each day for the next 60 years). On top of that, the box on the roof will result in higher power demand when driving. But, as I said, lovely idea ❤

Lets do the same with batteries for balcony solar systems. It’s a great idea, and they are quite cheap now (around 450€ / kwh), but if you do the math the break even point is in 20 years, give or take. I hope this all advances significantly, but atm it’s more about the message than the money 😊👍 (Germans and their logic, it’s heartbreaking sometimes if you see interesting new cool projects that just aren’t feasible on a financial level…)

its a stupid idea the added weight center of gravity introduce alot of wind noise and downgrade its aerodynamics efficiency increasing amount of power needed to do the same kind of range in the first place plus this require the car to be park in the hot sun during peak sunshine prolong that kind of activity significantly reduce the lifespan of rubber components and artificaly age your car the better soltion is have a proper solar system at your home to charge up the car now without space restraint you can actully have decent solar system a 10-20kwh system could easily charge the car up in less then a day assuming you spend one day of the weeked just staying at home the car would be fully charge up for the rest of the weekend.

These concepts are getting better and better. Im not sure how efficient it would be with creating the extra drag. Also If you have to get on top of your vehicle to unfold it all, and for $3,000, you might as well build your own 1200-1500w array out of flexible foldable panels that you just pull out of the trunk, unless of course this includes the power equipment (charger cord, lithium battery, inverter, etc) included in the price.

I had a similar idea but the panels would roll out of the trunk and contain flaps that fall over the sides as well. Sono Motors in Germany was successfully integrating panels into the body panels of the car. That solution is the most practical in my opinion, and it would be my hope that it takes off on all EV’s.

It's a shame that some exaggerated expectations are being created here. On a really good day, it will be possible to generate around 4 kwh. If you then assume an economical car with a consumption of approx. 16 kwh/ 100km, you can achieve 25 km under optimum conditions. However, the car must not be shaded, the weather must be really good and the car must be parked during the sunny hours. Then add to this the orientation of the solar cells and the conversion losses and unfortunately there is not much left of the electricity generated. If you then factor in the increased air resistance, you probably end up with almost zero over the year. As I said, the idea of a solar-powered car is a nice one, but it is a long way from being implemented in practice.

those panels are 1,2KW, if i understand correctly this is minimal amount to start charging Tesla, so if there is a bit less sun then 1,2KW then charging wont even start. And those panels on cars will never be on perfect angle, half of them will be on wrong angle to provide power. It will maybe work when sun is directly above car
@surfntrucks
@surfntrucks 16 күн бұрын
I read both of your points. I'm looking for a system like this that generations 6kW to 7kW. That's the ideal system. This system is 1.2kW and it's enough put energy back into the car while it's sitting 8 hours in a parking lot at work. Or when you've parked your Tesla at an airport while you're on a business trip. Or when it's sitting somewhere without a charger option for a long period of time. The idea is actually overdue. It's a great start until we can get more efficient photovoltaic systems. The real question is, why did this take so long?

So a 1200w array will produce on average 4.2kwh per day in Sydney = 1500kwh a year, $3000 is a high price to pay for an absolute maximum of 1500kwh a year, I would waste 1/2 of that on just the extra consumption dragging the unit around everywhere on roof racks. Forget this sort of generating capacily in the UK - if you're in London this goes down to 870kwh a year. The 1500kwh also only applies if my car is sitting outside 100% of every daylight hour with the unit deployed all that time, never in the shade, never in a garage, never in an undergound car park, never being driven - all of these things will reduce the opportunity to generate electricity. I can see an application for off-grid camping if that's what you're into but for regular daily use it would take me 50+ years to generate the savings to pay it off.

@@jamesengland7461 A 1200w array only produces 1200wh when the Sun is 100% perpendicular to the panel (directly overhead) but only around 10% of that output on rainy days, the output also drops rapidly as soon as there is any cloud cover whatsoever and there are also charge losses to consider. 1500kwh a year is being super generous - the 13,400w of panels on my roof (which by the way are more efficient and start producing at much lower light levels than any flexible array) can produce 90-100kwh in a day mid summer but only produced 12.5kwh yesterday in heavy rain and 35kwh 2 days ago on a mixed sunny /cloudy day and only peaked at 7.5kw output briefly around noon becuase it's now winter here and the Sun is low in the Sky most of the day and it won't produce 100% of its capacity even in the middle of the day.

The technology is readily available, off the shelf, if you prefer to DIY it. But this implementation definitely makes it convenient for the mass market. But energy output claim is definitely exaggerated as power production will vary because of several factors i.e. intensity of sunlight in your area, actual number of hours of optimum sunlight exposure, solar panel efficiency, etc. Also, it would help if the panels were all laid out flat and at the same angle facing skyward.

I could also see it as a good accessory when camping. However, it can't compete with having a garage with a dedicated EV charger, especially if you have some rooftop solar to power it. By my calculations, you'd need about 6 to 8 panels to do that with a Model 3.

Solar panel technology is improving every day. I think that with the technology that will be released in 5 years, we will be able to provide a minimum of 5 kW of energy to our vehicles with a much less system. It will be very successful if we do not see tools or systems sabotaged by the supporters of the oil lobbies. People buy this system, deliberately burn their vehicles, post them on social media, and the company loses money and goes bankrupt. This and similar things will prevent the development of our electric vehicle technology. Our job is hard.

Oh, right... in a garage, or parking lot?... where are charging stations (5 min. for 30 miles)?

@@GoSunSolar Increase the drag 10% at what speed? Adding roof racks alone (just the racks - nothing else on top), and driving at 70mph on a clear sunny day increases the wh/mi from 200 wh/mi to 240wh/mi on my model 3, I'm guessing at 70mph this would increase to a minimum of 320 wh/mi with this unit on top.

The high frequency, transformerless inverter tech that you're using in this device does not provide and isolation between its DC boost stage and its AC output which can damage your EVs onboard charger. You should have designed this unit using a transformer based DC to AC inverter instead.

Tesla claims 6.8 kw for 20 miles, 1.2kw solar IF @1200 watts, 5.6 hours to generate that. Might get 45 miles a day if you drive at night and charge all day from this after you epoxy magnets covered in felt to it. A full 100kw charge if @ 1200 watts ,83.3 hours plus losses. For short trips this could work while you work if you can prevent theft. Eg. unbolt the roof rack and run.

I think millions of people already had this idea, decades ago. Make an electric car with solar panel roof. The reason it hasn't been done yet is not the lack of the idea. It's because it's impractical and does not make sense economically. You'd spend the rest of your life unpacking and packing this thing daily just to get your investment back. The math on this is easy to do. Better to invest your money in home PV, you'll get to break even much quicker, and without the hassle of having to set up it each day.
