The Porsche 928 was a V8 GT, destined to replace the iconic air-cooled 911 when Porsche felt the Beetle-derived sports car had run its course. Sporting a purpose-built 4.5-litre V8 in the form of the M28, as well as passive rear-wheel steering, polyurethane bumpers and futuristic aerodynamic styling, the 928 was undoubtedly cutting-edge and had performance to scare Mercedes, Jaguar and its 911 stablemate! The transaxle layout allowed for four seats and a big boot, helping it earn the European Car of The Year 1978, a first for an exotic sports car! Now, 45 tears on from release, is the 928 the perfect classic Porsche?

I’m an ex-Porsche technician, believe me when I say that the 911 is complete rubbish compared to the 928. Ancient body architecture that is full of rust traps, engines that leak oil like sieves and need full rebuilds before 100k miles, 915 gearboxes that won’t change gear, archaic wiring loom, the list is endless. The 928 is even today the best built Porsche ever, buy one before we go six feet under. Ps. Please tell the owner to replace that awful single tailpipe rear silencer, it needs the original double tailpipes

@@matthewchannel9981 Compared to 911’s, they’re minor, cambelt and water pump every 4 years, is the only real issue. Apart from that anything else is minor, parts though are more expensive for the 928.

@@matthewchannel9981 if the wiring hasn’t been butchered by add-on alarm systems, they’re fine. All the circuits are controlled by separate fuses and relays. Very reliable. The only “issue” is that the cowl panel drains have to be kept clear of leaves etc, otherwise water will enter the car, possibly getting the lower line of relays wet

I have owned 5 different Porsches through the years including this one. It was all black and in my opinion the finest of the lot. I had the stick shift, a 5 speed if I recollect, and that V8 was unbelievably good. Road handling and run experience was top drawer all around. I still regret getting rid of it, but that's what I do - always turned by the next pretty head that walks through the door. My current ride is a Lexus LC500. It's a really fun car too - a naturally aspirated V8. FUN!

@@matthewchannel9981 Yes. He showed me the fuse box on a 928 and it was a total nightmare. Tracing down electrical gremlins is very difficult and requires taking the car apart & following the harness from front to back. He also showed me burned cathodes and resisters etc..and said that was also hard to deal with. Customers do not want to pay his hourly rate to "try to find the problem" and chase down electrical headaches. So he tells his customers to stay away from 928's.

Registration plate colour scheme is wrong. Should be on black-on-white plates at the front and black-on-yellow at the back.
@adamkravitz6721
@adamkravitz6721 Жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm the owner. I had to laugh at this one. It came with the correct plates (yellow/white), but the black plates are legal on pre-1980 cars (even though "period incorrect" after 1973). I'm kind of a "period correct" person, but the black plates just really went with the red w/black and white pasha (and also signal "historic vehicle"). I kept the plates it came with (not originals... if it had those I would have kept them on) and they are pretty easy to switch back.
@lewis72
@lewis72 Жыл бұрын
@@adamkravitz6721 I did know that they're not illegal on pre-'80 cars but that's only a recent allowance due to DVLA screwing up by linking the permission of silver-on-black plates with the rolling 40-year tax-free historic vehicle status. It took them 7 years to realise and haven't forced people who have cars registered between '73 and '80 to go back to the colour scheme that they were issued with. Your car, your choice, of course but I can't see the point of going down the originality route but then having over-retro plates. Maybe you could go for white-wall cross-ply tyres too ? 😆 Manufactures were dropping the silver-on-black plates years before the 1973 cut-off; there's a 1970 Ford brochure with the new colour scheme plates on.

Had my S2 for 6 years now, had plenty of classics before but this is the one i’ve owned for the longest and no intention of selling. Yes there’s a lot of old electrics that can go wrong but most problems tend to be caused by bad grounds, if rubber fuel and steering hoses aren’t replaced it’s a fire risk but no worse than any other FI car with power steering. If you like an analogue project they are great to work on, and there’s endless support from sites like Rennlist.
