This was a really challenging build, I had to make a few custom tools to get the result I wanted! It was well worth the effort though, and I'm really happy with how it came out!

I make straights for a living. You did a great job for a first attempt! Way better than my first. The grind is the hardest part to get right. Having the rights depth of hollow and dimensions is important. Cool material is flashy, but often makes for a inferior edge. The edge thickness has to be well under 10 thou and heat treatment so it's flexible against the thumbnail. That is the key to a good shaver. That thing would be like shaving with a sharpened axe. And the scales could do with some thinning. You could club someone with those things!

Want to make one of these... not for any reason.. just cause. Is that a special version, as it looks different from most I have seen dimension wise.

It's a slightly wider than average design, I wanted to compliment the pattern, and based the profile roughly off of a design by Lewis Razors.

@@jamesball7322 very welcome! It' pretty simple to make. They do cause a lot of friction and loading on the motor, so make sure to constantly cool the belt and platen with water, which also lubeicates it

Where do you get the Idea that clean billet welding without Flux is more reliable? At 2:37 it Looks like you have a cold spot at the Tip. Maybee because there is a air bubble inside, and another Problem is the MiG/Mag ,Arc Welder destroy the Damaskus pattern. If you didnt grind and clean the surfaces almost perfectly flat you end up in a failure. But your Radius table is brilliant.
@SamTownsBladesmith
@SamTownsBladesmith 4 жыл бұрын
There are some steels that rquire this method to properly fuse, as well as this method provides no opportunity for flux to be trapoed between the layers. This billet welded up flawlesly, and while yes, you do have to grind out the welds, it's a small sacrifice. This method also has the advantage of prolonging forge life, as you aren'teating away your forge floor with flux. It requires more prep, but sometimes taking the time is worth ir

@xj9779 4 жыл бұрын
@@SamTownsBladesmith hmm some good points. I havent much Trouble with Flux welding so I would only use this method for San Mai knifes with carbon steel in the middle and and some stainless Steel on the outsides. Anyway it turned out niceley so big thanks for sharing your Work with us.
