Forging a Froe (part 2) - will explore the initial shape of the log splitting tool and hopefully answer the title question: does it work?

@@cmosphoto1 Maybe i didn't say. ha. Its Engalmann spruce, the tree was a standing dead tree, so basically full dry. These could be things to mention in the video.

You just have to do your blacksmithing a little better boys . plus curved froes are gonna bend .... they inherently have to , by design..each hit wil make it bend a tiny tiny bit with each hit ... straight froes last and last .. untill of course their finally grown too thin .. my uncle ised the same froe for years and years and made thousands and thousands of shingles with just a couple froes only replacing the handles from time to time .. Where are you guy located ?

Interior BC. You are absolutely right. The curve idea was more so the froe wouldn’t get stuck in the log and that part worked great right until it crumbled to pieces. We are kind of mis using the traditional froe and we know it, huge spruce logs sometimes 32” long and we are cracking them open. Not a froe around that can take that forever. We have been using a 10-15 lb homemade straight froe made from a large leaf spring in combination with a 16lb cast hammer for over a year which is a new record though.

@@MountainVoiceInc well , you are sure in a good area for tonewoods ... you're experimenting... that's good ... sometimes you think everything's been tried before, but people overlook the obvious all tje time.. and even when it fails you always learn something... Just a note .. I watched a guy on KZfaq take a beautiful, huge Appalachian Red Spuce, cut it up , and made 2x4s for his wifes she shed .. I almost cried .... Stay warm up there ..
