Ever see something and say "I better make a knife out of it"? Thank you to Luis Montez for his expert sledge work. Do not use galvanized or coated cable for forging. These are the most commonly available cables (i.e. Home Depot, Lowes and even online wire rope retailers) and will release poisonous fumes.

There are many folks out there making knives and decorative pieces with cable damascus, search some of their vids and sub them!

One of the craziest Damascus patterns I've ever seen. Super cool. Nice vids, I personally like more commentary because the few instances of humor I've heard from you have been pretty entertaining, but either way keep doing what you're doing. It's good quality and the results are impressive.

***** Let's call it pattern welded steel. I know Damascus is 2 alternating steels, I just thought most people would recognize the etched patterns as Damascus. Either way looks really nice.

You're right that he's more beginner friendly, both the projects he does and his 'just give it a go' attitude; his casting a brass hammer video being a good example. No it wouldnt' bobbafet. Heating it would weld it together, then all you have to do it hammer one end like you do any other knife. As long as the cable handle isn't damaged it would be fine, numerous blades have had wire handles.

@GreenBeetle

+Silent- Hill it's called "razor sharp" for a reason. Hair is actually a pretty complicated matter, especially facial hair, some can be as hard as copper wires (same diametre of course), it's implied that if you can get a blade as sharp as a razor, then it's as sharp as it can get
@rei_cirith

+Silent- Hill For me, it was always cutting a piece of paper from the top edge and straight down.... less dangerous.
@Bru741iX
@Bru741iX 8 жыл бұрын
+reicirith The thing is, with printer paper, you can easily cut it with even a moderately sharp blade. It just requires the right technique. I saw a video once where they tested sharpness by taking a single newspaper page, folding it so it can stand upright, then cutting it in half with a knife without any sawing motion. Now that's sharp, and needless to say it shaved like it was meant to do it. (it was a kitchen knife) For me, a knife that can be dragged through a phonebook page without tearing it or "jumping", is sharp enough to do most things you can do with a knife.

+Jordan Nazif that's just wrong, here is a link to say how it's made www.madehow.com/Volume-3/Fertilizer.html you are refering to manure which can be used as fertilizer. it's not a piece of crap it's a steel cable, a useless small chunk but none the less something of worth.

+Green Beetle I see. Is it just the zinc that gets into the gas as a toxin or are there other toxic chemicals/elements being released if you did heat up galvanized metals? Also how can you tell if a metal is galvanized?
@darrenleonard4642
@darrenleonard4642 8 жыл бұрын
martinaee Yeah its the zink. You could use white vinegar to soak it for a few days to remove most of the zinc which would bring it into safe levels but your probs best Just leaving it because of you have an alergic reaction to it then it will be that much worse regardless of the volume it might still irritate you.

It takes 10 min to forge a knife to a shape you can rough out on a grinder, but that is hot time. it takes my forge 30 minutes to heat up to forge tempurature if I use coke. if I start with coal tack on another 20 min. steel takes a good 3 or 4 minutes to heat up the first time and I am sure it took a couple hours to weld that cable into a billet. sanding and file work take up the most time for me that is a whole day. so for me it takes about 3 days to go from peice of cable to a knife if that is the only thing I am doing.

10 minutes of hot time. Where the metal is actually on the anvil. This does not include heating the forge or the metal. If you are working a piece 1 inch wide and 1/4 inch thick of,something like 1084 it goes fairly quickly. Grinding and sanding take up the most time.
