Forging a SPATULA from one piece of steel

Hello everyone and welcome to the forge! In this week's episode, I forge a spatula. I broke our cheap store-bought one while cooking and figured it's about time for something better that's made to last. I forged this spatula from a piece of 1.5-inch mild steel flat bar 1/4 of an inch thick. If you get a chance head out to the workshop and give this project a try. @@Mysticmountainforge absolutely!!.keep in mind you won't get a very big spatula surface from the spike, I use the head of the spike for the spatula and the shaft part drawn out for the handle, I draw it out to about 5/16 (8mm) thick and as long as I can, then either bend over the end for a handle or put a wooden handle on the end depending on what I'm feeling for the day, they work great for a camping style spatula or for breakfast sausage patties.. I sell them like crazy..people love hand forged stuff. I season them with cooking oil for a nice blackened rust resistance.

Beautiful. Ive been wanting to make one myself. Ive made them from 14 gauge stainless sheet with a wood handle but thats not hard enough for me i guess haha.

Is this practical? Isn't this kind of metal super rust prone? Like get it wet don't wipe it down in five min and it's already rusting?

I think it is, we use this one all the time without any problems, it's not high carbon so it doesn't rust that fast at all, we also dry it off after washing it. Almost all blacksmith related blanks for cooking/grilling are made from the same steel. Now if it was made from something with a medium or high carbon it would rust like crazy. It's a lot like using a cast iron pan, if you leave it wet and don't dry it afterward it will ultimately rust, but anything not stainless steel will do that in the end.
