Forging the Avatar movie hunting knife from two rusty nuts. See me forge, process and decorate some scrap metal into a very beautiful Na’vi dagger - the wing claw of an ikran. I think that Jake Sully would like this.
About the Avatar Navi hunting knife
The Na'vi hunting knife is used by all the members of a Na'vi clan. The blade of the knife is made from the wing claw of an ikran. An ikran is a large, dragon-like aerial predator and all young Na’vi hunters must tame their own ikran in order to become a real hunter.
Me Forging the knife
I found the 2 nuts in a scrap metal container outside my garage last summer. Yes, I do metal dumpster diving. (The luxury life of a youtuber). And for a long time I have thought about creating this legendary Avatar Knife.
So I did a sketch and then started by cutting the nuts open with an angel grinder and heated them up to around 1100-1200°C then I opened the nuts up on the horn of my anvil and forged 2 flat pieces of metal. Of the first piece of metal I formed the blade of the knife and from the second piece of metal I formed the handle. There was of course a lot of metal filing, angle grinding and hand grinding involved in this metal working process of the blade and knife handle to achieve the correct dimensions and look.
Then I welded the two metal pieces - blade and handle - together. I know that this is a deathly sin that I could get hanged fore in the blacksmith community. You always do a knife in one piece of metal. After the metal was united, I decorated the knife with marking and scratches so it would look more like a Na’vi knife made of a claw from a wild ikran.
Then I hardened the knife with heat and oil and sandblasted it to achieve a matte raw metal look.
I coloured the metal black with a fast-acting liquid used to blacken metal or antique brass, copper and bronze part. Very poisoning stuff. So remember safety gear if you work with this at home.
At last I gave it the final touch with 4 colours that I use to dry paint on tiny details. I gave it a very simple handle of burlap and burlap laze. As a little extra I engraved a tiny “Jack Sully” on the bottom of the handle. I really think that this ended up looking like a real Avatar Na’vi Hunting Knife - one that Jake Sully would be proud to wear in the movie.
Me and my family are going to the cinema during Christmas holidays to see the Avatar 2 movie. We are really looking forward to seeing this beautiful cinematic masterpiece that James Cameron has created. We were very thrilled about the Avatar 1 movie, so we have high expectations of this 12 year later successor.
