Forging press vs power hammer... Let's see the difference! Which one is right for you... hydraulic press or power hammer?
Both tools can be very handy to have in the shop, as we address in this forging press video. I discuss the difference between power hammer and power press for forging...
A blacksmith press hydraulic makes quick work of a thick chunk of steel. You can make your own homemade blacksmith press or purchase a hydraulic forging press for the blacksmith.
I hope you enjoyed this hydraulic press vs power hammer video. I'll probably start a playslist for more press vs power hammer videos on doing different forging operations.

I’m making a small press soon. It’s nowhere near as strong as yours but it suits my needs. 6 ton press for drawing out billets and bars. Love both though

about avoiding the press sucking out too much heat.. clamp down a hot piece of steel in the dies and let it sit there while you heat up your work.. that way when its time to work, the dies won't draw out as much heat

Hi late getting into hot forging did cold forging most of my young life but as I am developing carpletunnel I am looking for the right tool to offset hand hammering when having to hand hammer for long periods of time I am fairly new to it but again did a lot of manual labor in life so body at what it used to be this has always been a passion and now I have the money to start any advise would be awesome

Press and hammer is complimentary to each other. What one is good at the other not so much. Like having both.

Thank you for doing this type of video. Is really like to see more pros and cons. I live in a neighborhood close together houses. So I’m leaning towards a press cause of the noise. Hydraulics can be loud too. But I’m sure a power hammer would be louder in the long run. I think.

I know nothing about smithing, but on that power hammer, wouldn't it make more sense for the base platform to be a little larger than the hammer head coming down?

+Curtis McPherson I currently do not sell plans for this press. This was my first time making a press and so therefore there is a lot of things I would change before I put it in plan phase. Induction coil the dies I draw out 1 inch stock 45 inches in one heat. I use a mot grounded.

Another thing to mention is the fact that power hammers one has and presses one has may not even be directly comparable to pressure/ force to have an accurate comparison in forging time. A 25lb little giant hammer may not be very reasonably comparable to a 50 ton press.

I've been noticing that there is a lot of people using the press for forge welding would that be better then power hammer? maybe you can do a video comparing the 2.

Seems like there is more control with the P. Hammer than the H. Press because it would be easier to go too far with the press.

Lou Fazio - the control mechanism is connected to a large foot pedal that you have to use to operate them. Check out some other build videos and you see...

I've used both for 30 years. I mostly used the PH until my elbows were shot. The PH was faster for some operations and not as loud. But for punching and die work the Hydraulics are best, but for drawing billets slower. Now I'm 60 and just can't take the shock of the PH.

I think I have a good idea for a press with a car jack There would be a (cordless) drill mounted to the Jack. The only problem would be to put the drill in reverse mode. I thought about an electric motor with a little circuit in it and a pedal from a sewing machine but that would probably a bit to high-tech for me🤷

Rostissiere motor. Slow and powerful. Don't know if they reverse, good luck.

The major difference is loss of heat! With the press the work piece is in touch with a the pressing bodies longer than in the hammering process.

You need both. Buy a power hammer and build your own press from a 25 ton log splitter. And there ya go! 😁

So essentially powerhammer introduced heat back into the billet, is more precise. Really expensive and specialised. Build / buy a press first then a powerhammer. Thanks

I say press imo it's just so much easier takes a bit longer but not as wild and out of control as a hammer slow is steady steady ud fast

I don’t think any of them Won. The hydraulic Forge would help you get started and set, especially if using multiple layers. And a hammer forged would help you the rest of the way. I think I’ll have to build both.Because they have two distinct jobs. I’ll build the power hammer first. Thank you for the video.

Hi nice video. To be onest this power hammer od relatively small. My power hammer is from old times 1958, simular to this russian. Theo hammer is 80kg and IT hits 50-80 times stronger. In a free timer i can sens you my video with such a metal dice. IT can be comperable to yours press. Metal squising by hammer is much beter. The metal have more spreded and dense structure. Specialy whan you have goodbye quality steel.
