We are forging mokume gane from quarters under our air assist treadle hammer. You can find our air assist treadle hammer kit at our website www.blacksmithingblanks.com.
TREADLE HAMMER WITH AIR ASSIST: This treadle hammer kit with air assist is a complete bolt together kit. A welder is not required. The build will require basic hand tools (ie: drill bits, drill, wrenches, etc.) It can be assembled in as little as 45-60 minutes, onto a 2" x 4" stud. All that you will need to provide is a sledgehammer of your choosing in the 6lb to 12lb range. Also bring your anvil to beat upon. And an air compressor to run the air assist with. The kit will come with a link to an instructional how-to-build video plus everything you need to assemble. This is treadle hammer kit with air assist allows you to use either the foot powered treadle or the air assist without having to hook/unhook anything. You can get it at our product page for $700: www.christcenteredironworks.c....

If you got it hot and quenched it the drilling would have been much easier. For those who don't know metals like copper, silver and gold gen annealed (softened) how you would normally harden steel. I imagine nickel is the same way but not sure

Im working on the beam hammer build. Trying to do a da Vinci cam to lift hammer. Need more measuring drilling and welding to get body set up. I will let you know how it goes, might use a spring to add extra force if the cam works.

i didn't see flux applied to the stack of quarters(?), that's a real missing link...are the quarters actually old, all-silver? it would make sense to stack the quarters, wrapped in iron wire, to weld them, *then* into the vice?

How does that treadle hammer work on steel? Mine has a railroad track head and is only good for small top tool striking.

Roy is it okay to handle with tongs while you're in the finishing process? And what is the torch tip your using called. I don't have it. I need to purchase one.
@ChristCenteredIronworks
@ChristCenteredIronworks Жыл бұрын
You can hold it with tongs but you don't want it to marr it .. holding in hand is the Best way I have found. The torch tip is called a "1/2" rosebud " can be found at most welding supply shops ☺️

What do you think of steel, brass, and copper? Or am I asking for trouble with low melting temps?
@jensdavidsen4557
@jensdavidsen4557 Жыл бұрын
That's a great question and it definitely says a lot about your creative thinking so props to you! You can forge braze copper or brass to steel (just as you can braze with an acetylene oxygen torch), however 2 things: 1) brass contains zinc which can be fatal in enclosed areas 2) brazing isn't welding...it's like a stronger version of soldering, the filler (copper or bronze) melts far cooler than steel; it's a bonding process for sure, and very strong, but it's not welding. Welding requires both materials to reach the melting point. If you try this with something like copper (like Alec Steele very recently did), you will find the copper melting out. Again, that was a great question! Keep up the creativity! We're all here to learn something! Cheers, - Jens

Steel And copper Yes . Steel And brass no.... Brass would be a vapor before the steel got hot enough to do anything

That's awesome to hear! I've really been struggling with mokume gane for soooo long. I keep getting oxidation between layers and not solid bonding. This seems like a great way to do this.
