In this video, I step through a high-level process and talk about some techniques of forging and finishing a hook knife and "sloyd" knife for carving spoons. For the methods I used to create these carving knives, I focused on using only very basic tools, so that anyone interested in getting into the hobby could use this video as a starting point.
The metal I used for the knives was an old rusty file, and for the handles, I used a tree branch. Beyond that, I used only a few affordable tools you can buy or create yourself!

Fascinating presentation. Approaching 80 so I find these simple, basic methods quite relaxing to watch. Thank you.

Really great tutorial, liked that you used more common everyday tools. I’d like to know how long it actually took to get to end. Not to discourage but to give a realistic time for the rest of us. Thanks for a great encouraging video.

Thank you! I think the total project time with all the videoing was in the 5 hour range. But there are a couple steps like where I did the annealing of the blades after they were forged, where they were left in the coals overnight. Got back to work on it the next day.

I. Want. To. Do THIS! Thank you so much, hugely inspiring. Where could I find info I need for types of steel, and just general blacksmithing 101? I'm good with my hands in general, but don't know any of the basics around heating, cooling, etc, when it comes to blacksmithing! Thanks again!

This is awesome 👍🏻 Why did you not put the tang of the hook knife in the center of the handle? Is it for ergonomics or to get the tang closer to the wood? Sorry if I missed that part.

Simply just to show a different method of doing things. I could have done it the same as the sloyd knife for sure.

Hey hey. I used an old file for the steel. It works very well for this purpose and is easy to forge.

Wish ànyone playing Bladesmith would check out for suggestions as to build with known steel for the project such as 01 or 1095 and suggestions for quenching oils. Don't just make videos that doesn't teach correctly. Sorry I just wasted to much work on junkie steel building tool just better than the Chinese and 3rd world nations
