Something to keep in mind is that points ignition systems usually run the coil at a reduced voltage to extend it's life and the life of the points. However, there is normally a "bypass" circuit that supplies full battery voltage to the coil whenever the switch is in the "start" position. On a GM that comes off the R terminal on the solenoid. GM vehicles use a resistor wire in the harness to the coil which you have to remove or bypass if you convert to an HEI ignition.
@chriswells14403 жыл бұрын
What color is it ? Yellow ? I twisted the 2 wires together that went to coil. Then to bat. On HEI... I think I shouldn't have .. because part throttle I have spark rattle really bad .(Detonation) I'm thinking of running a straight to battery with a switch. Or from the fuse block. 12.3 volts to HEI right now other hot wires have 12.6 or more Im sure its in time been doing this since 1988..
@jusngonzales53492 жыл бұрын
HEI was a Godsend! Points were always so troublesome. I'm 68 yrs.old and have owned many Nova's in the past, and still own a 69' SS, converted automatic, small block, tunnel ram, 9" Ford rear end, w/18"wide MT tires in the tubbed rear end. I drove it 400 miles out of town last wk.end, with no problem. Very dependable, and fun to drive. Love it.
@nquinutolo1970 Жыл бұрын
Yes, the pink wire from the steering column to the coil is a resistive wire to decrease down the voltage from 12 to 6 Vdc. If you upgrade from points to an HEI OR A Petronix unit the pink wire has to be bypassed with a new non-resistive wire.

Or general motors engine either way it's made by them. That's A?desncent fishers body still to work with to. AMD metals has replacement parts for chevys.&etc. 18 gauge & 20 gauge to. For body work on older style vehicles brotherman. Good luck with your build to. Yeah those 1972 super sports are nice bodies.& sharp looking rides to drive around in.,or ride around in to. Their powerhouses for sure. Those 350 engines are beast to. I'd try some Lucas oil stabilizer with stop leak in it just for more insurance reasons alone when you change the motor oil. I know it's called motor oil.& people call motors engines right. Either way more protection in the oil is better for first oil run is good in them like that with high millage oil mixed lucas& zinc additives can be A game changer.& make a lot of difference to.

Especially if it has doubled humped heads on the engine also. Try running some true FUEL through that carburetor mixed with some premium gasoline.& WD-40 in the fuel tank to. I know it sounds crazy it really does work though it'll free up that stuck fuel pump problems for ya to your having not pumping fuel to your carburetor

72 nova is the reason I love cars. My brother had a 72 ss 350 4 speed when I was a kid. Your coil power is a resistor wire and should only have 6-9v
@jusngonzales53492 жыл бұрын
I agree. A bad registor or corroded resistor wire will not allow your car to start or run.

My 1st car was a duckshit green 1970 Nova that we sanded down, primered and painted International Harvester black because farm implement paint was cheaper than automotive paint at the time. It was a cool looking car but the bench seat had a hole in the backrest big enough to throw a cat through, it went through oil sending units like they were candy and with everything being as near to stock as I could get, those bias ply tires squalled going around a curve at 35mph, lol. I never thought of a Nova as a classic car, just an old one. But then I'm 52 and I'm not a classic myself, LOL!

Im currently working on a 69 and a 70,… very cool find you have there! That’s great the motor wasnt locked up after sitting all those years! I would do a compression check to see if and cylinders are weak. I think the 72 Vin# you can tell if its a true SS if the 5th digit is an “F”?
@NoL1m1tGarage Жыл бұрын
It is true SS and all #s match

I had a 70 nova SS 350 one morning it wouldn't start. The first thing I did was check for spark and found none and the plugs I then checked the point and found no power from the coil. checked power to the coil and found the wire to the coil had melted and replaced it. The car started just fine after that. A week later I started up the car and seen smoke coming out from under the hood, The whole wire harness was on fire. I replaced the wires and got a Chilton book covering my car and found it had resistor built into the wire to the coil. I had a junk yard just down the road so although they didn't have the proper wire they had a resistor block from a Plymouth Valiant. I wired the block into place of the resistor wire and never had a problem with it since.

I have a 1970 Nova SS small block that I have had now for 15 years. I did a lot of research before buying it. finding that there is only 1 way to know for sure if it was actually an SS. That is by the car's VIN number being stamped on the engine pad behind the alternator along with the engine code. So, mine has the matching VIN on the block and dash and it is a CNJ code which is an L48, 350 cu in, 300 HP engine which was the stock Corvette V8 and was the only small block available in the SS. Some folks claim that only SS's came with disc brakes which is not true. You can have ordered Disc brakes in any Nova as well as any suspension package. This only applies to pre 1972 Nova's when the Nova SS added the "K" code to the VIN.

The jumper wire is how we used to steal v.w. Bugs 35 years ago….just had to push start it……also old fords but you can bump the solenoid with a screwdriver/ butterknife if you were solo and pushing wasnt an option due to auto trans……0ld 911’s would literally need a 50lb slide hammer, and most motorcycles just a flat head screwdriver and some visegrips…..im not proud of my past and lucky to have survived it all…….as a responsible adult ive had a few of my trucks stolen as well and i just chalk it up to karma….moral of the story, nobody likes a thief or a liar….dont do dumbshit cause now days your liable to get shot……….and istall a hidden kill switch or fuse box in your older vehicles to prevent them from getting stolen…..i have a LSA supercharged nova and a supercharged LS c10 both of which have hidden fuse’s and fuel pump relays to make sure they stay where i put them!!!!! Also a blinking light helps prevent broken glass

so many things done or should say not done before trying to start it. 1. first check if engine is free by turning engine by hand. 2. disconnect fuel tank from fuel pump. 3. put a lubricant in each cylinder, 4. put gas and oil mixture in carb.
@NoL1m1tGarage2 жыл бұрын
1. Engine was checked to make sure it was free. Theres another video on that 2. I knew i wasnt going to run it but a few seconds. Fuel pump was disconnected right after confirmation that it ran. 3. Yep, could have lubed cylinders, usually do, didn't. It happens 🤷♂️ 4. Gas that was in the redbull can was fresh and had a scosh of oil in it. Just didn't mention. Thanks for the pointers! I appreciate you watching!!! I should probably explain what I'm doing a little more, but I get caught up and eager to hear things run. Lol

Advice for beginners. Best way to check an old engine is to use starting fluid. If it doesn't spit and sputter, then you ain't got no fire. Then check your points, fuel pressure, timing,, spark plugs, or hot wire it. Starting fluid is essential in first initial attempt. Better than gas, won't flud your engine, and eliminates most of the guess work.

This is the dumbest thing you should do, if you happen upon this type of greatness. If you happen upon a car that has not been started in a couple years you'll want to check the fluids, look at the oil, make sure it's not a milk shake, where antifreeze and oil mixed. You will then look at the heads, lifters and rods with a scope, finally, try to hand crank the engine, and get it to turn over manually, If you can get it to turn over manually, then you will want to check for spark, after spark you'll want to prime the engine, autozone make a 50$ tool, you will hand turn and then prime through the distributer hole on the manifold on every 1/4 turn till you are all the way around. Then, throw your new battery in and check the transmission, make sure you are not in first. if it turns over, and is not syncing, you'll want to tune it up. this guy could have ruined an engine trying to be a motortrender green horn. lol ALSO AND IMPORTANT, do not use that gas, check the fuel lines and dump it, I would use valvoline starter fluid to get it running, then go through everything. This video has 26k views, it's scary that people think this the proper way to do this. A lot of false information. he didn't even check the radiator... omg. unsubscribe. That coil is also probably fried. lol
@NoL1m1tGarage2 жыл бұрын
Coil is fine. And didnt check the radiator? You must not have heard me say the freeze plugs were rusted out and there wasnt coolant in it. Hence why I didn't run it long. I could go on in the list, but its probably not worth it. I did a majority of the things you listed. But i appreciate the view!! I never claimed to be the smartest, just out havin fun and enjoying great old cars! Another one saved!
