Facing new threats-including toxins from illegal marijuana grows-the fate of this little-known mammal hangs in the balance.
Video by Days Edge Productions
---
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, populations of the fisher (Pekania pennanti)-a forest-dwelling member of the weasel and otter family-were in steep decline across much of its native range of northern North America. Both fur trapping and habitat loss from logging and urbanization took a heavy toll. However, once trapping bans and timber harvest restrictions were put in place, the species rebounded in many regions.
Unfortunately, that trend hasn’t carried over to the West Coast of the U.S., where an isolated population of fishers, known as the Pacific fisher, continues to struggle. Scientists estimate that only 4,000 Pacific fishers remain, with just 300 left in California’s Sierra Nevada Range. These individuals now face a new and rising threat: illegal marijuana grow sites that are cropping up on public lands. Growers use poisons to protect their plants from rodents, and these chemicals are indiscriminate killers.
Despite the Pacific fisher’s high vulnerability to extinction, this little-known mammal has yet to receive federal protection under the Endangered Species Act. In the absence of this type of government regulation, an uneasy collaboration among scientists, conservation organizations, and the timber industry has filled in to take its place. For now, these efforts offer hope for the Pacific fisher-but without endangered species status, there are no assurances that current protections will continue into the future.

Over the past few months I've seen multiple animals on my land that look like a weasel. Then, I found myself here. Now I know I have a thriving population of fishers. Recently, I've seen smaller ones and one that looks like it weighs a solid 20 lbs. Very cool animal. Side note, I see them at least once a week.

I too hunt and spend many hundreds of hours a year hiking, camping, XC skiing, and snowshoeing about the Northwoods and enjoy and care greatly for the environment, wildlife, and the flora. I think most people who spend a lot of time in the outdoors eventually develops a sense of stewardship for the wild. What do you hunt in Oz? Here in my part of the country I hunt mostly deer, snowshoe hare, and ruffed grouse, and woodcock, some also hunt black bear, turkeys, and waterfowl.

I read they have been making a come back over there within the last 15 years. They're pretty cool creatures. Highly intelligent and great hunters. I've only seen one once when I was out hunting, the rest of my sightings have been just via trail cam photos. If you take a jar of peanutbutter and drill a hole through the bottom (enough for a tongue to slip through) and nail the lid of the jar onto a tree about 2 ft (screw the jar of peanutbutter on afterwards) they'll love ya for it. I get all sorts of great photos/videos of them, of course this will also attracts other animals too but the fisher will usually be the dominating animal if he/she is around.

Do you not know your own country on the map? The map shown at 1:15 clearly shows that about 85 to 90% of the fisher's habitat is in Canada. As to crossing paths with them, I have been very fortunate to encounter them 3 times, as soon as they become aware of you they give you a momentary look to try and figure out what you are, then they quickly disappear, unless they hear you or scent you first, then you won't see them at all.

@@swaneeriver4169 while I agree wholeheartedly with complete legalization - I fail to see how that's going to stop the problem. If loggers/growers are finding ways around it or blatantly ignoring it as it is how is legalization going to stop it now? The reason it's not on the endangered species list is because it is not endangered. The species Pekania pennanti is synonymous with martes pennanti . Subspecies are not recognized because they are the same just living in different parts of North America. There is no reason to put it on a federal endangered species list. Instead just closing any hunting or trapping season on it for a time in the North West and giving it state protection is sufficient. These animals are not fragile or picky about what they eat. In Eastern North America the animal is doing very well, in some areas to well and has become a pest.

@@jessejameslatimer8686 Yes, a deer certainly can kill a cat, and I'm sure it's happened. Female deer are protective of their young, and male deer can be particularly aggressive during mating season. The world is full of dangers, and we're responsible for our pets' safety.

@@gertrude574 for the record I was 17 and school when the event happened. My opened the door to get some fresh air. I do not blame her, but the cat leaving had nothing to do with me. At the end of the day these things are vicious, they will even go after your toddler. I grew up on 50 acres of land in Ontario Canada, I've seen plenty of deer and plenty fishers. I'm sure deers have gone after cats, I'm sure deers have even gone after humans, but generally sneaking, since there are exspections to everything in life, a fisher is farrrr more likely to do damage than a deer. And I have never seen it in the 15 years that I lived on that land. All I can speak for is what I've seen happen. And I would never kill a deer.

@@jessejameslatimer8686 You're so full of horseshit. Fishers don't attack people unless it's rabid or being antagonized. They also rarely attack cats. Even if that fisher did eat your cat, killing an animal trying to feed itself doesn't bring your cat back, you degenerate. If you're so fragile you take anything the local wildlife does personally you should live in a city with the rest of the people who don't understand how nature works.

@@alexanderkrummholtz1589 u have no idea krum.. we are part of the balance. I'll take the biologists word over yours. You have any clue what they do to a turkey, quail, grouse and (endangered) spruce grouse population. Ya clueless numbnutz
@alexanderkrummholtz1589
@alexanderkrummholtz1589 Жыл бұрын
@@lungbuster3097 Okay, believe the biologists. Do you know what they say? Fishers don't eat birds in sufficient quantities to reduce their populations, and fishers rarely ever hunt turkeys. Do you know what the National Wild Turkey Federation says about turkey populations? They're falling because of declining habitat quality, not because of predation. Fishers have lived in balance with the birds on your land for thousands of years, until you came along apparently. Funny how that works? Oh, also, the spruce grouse isn't even endangered lmao. But I did find out their eggs are often taken by squirrels. Do you know what an important predator of squirrels is? The fisher. So you want more grouse on your property? Leave the fishers alone. Easy.
