When we were living in Stuttgart, Germany about 1968-69 there was a used car lot that had several Mercedes staff cars that still had all of the insignia markings. I have often wondered what happened to them.

The word "Horch" is the imperativ form of "hören" , meaning to listen , that has been translated into it's latin equivalent "Audi"... beeing now the name of the company, that's Logo is visible on the "Kühlergrill" 😉 (the cover of the radiator) of the "Horch " Thanks from a great fan of your work. The Germans were known to use Opel Admirals as staff cars. The GM subsidy used Chevrolet drive trains. The Opel Blitz used the Chevrolet's "stove bolt" six engine. Ford Werks AG continued to produce American trucks and components under license. Both Ford and GM were award damage settlements in the 50s-60s. The Soviet's produced Ford automotive components and entire cars by license under the GAZ brand.

Dr. Felton I used to think I knew a solid amount about the war until I found your channel before my freshman year of college. You rekindled my interest in WWII, and gave me inspiration to genuinely study the subject, specifically the deterioration of the Wehrmacht. By cross referencing various data archives regarding fielded manpower, O found that the Wehrmacht fielded only 1/2-2/3 of their strength at the beginning of 1945 by Germany’s surrender. An overwhelming majority of those casualties were POWs, as the frequent overextension of the frontlines created several opportunities for encirclements. This was compounded by Hitler’s refusal to retreat, which was the same thing that got almost a million Axis troops killed or captured following the tide turning defeat at Stalingrad. Anyway, I haven’t read any of your books yet, but I definitely plan to. I happily binge watch your content, and I imagine that your books contain even more detail. Keep on inspiring people to dig deeper into what I believe really was the greatest hour of the greatest generation.

Dear Dr Felton, dear Mark, an interesting collection and an interesting story. Plaese allow me a few remarks. 1. The 540 K may very well have been owned once by Goebbels, however your statement on the 500 and 540 K as being the lead cars for the NSDAP top isn't wholly correct. Most cars until 1938 were of the 770 type. There was indeed a small series 0f 500 parade cars for the Reichskanzlei you mentioned. Even with a fully open body, so without a heavy duty hood and roll up windows, the sheer weight made the cars under powered, and no further examples were built. They were replaced by the new 770K introduced in 1938 which were available as Open Tourer, F- Cabriolet, D-Cabriolet and Pullman Limousines. These chassis could also better handle even further added weight when armour plating, which increasingly was in demand, was fitted. BTW, Hitler preferred to sit next to the driver and that seat was always made especially comfortable to his requirements. 2. The Horch shown is a standard bodied type 853 convertible produced by Gläser in Dresden, however Goering's car was a spiffy 2/3 seater roadster bodied by Erdmann & Rossi, and this is not that car. 3. Most NSDAP bigwigs rode in Mercedes, but there was also the Maybach DS8 Zeppelin with a V12 8 litre engine, and for instance Heinrich Himmler and Dr Julius Dorpmuller preferred that car over the 770's.. The Technical Museum in Sinsheim (GE) has two 770K Cabrio on display, one 770K Limousine and a Mercedes G4 Stabswagen. All in perfect condition.

Tonight on Top Gear: The Stig takes the Goebbels' 540K around our track, Martin Bormann is our slimy madman in a reasonably priced car and Richard Hammond drives the Blue Goose off a cliff.

There is one of the Mercedes here in NZ, at Southwards car Museum.

Mr Felton. I wanted to tell you a few things I’ve noticed on those cars you pointed out. 1 that 80 percent Mercedes 540k is more like 65 percent. The paint on the fenders looks to have been done with a paintbrush by a Russian ogre with no idea how to paint. I would rate that car a 6 out of 10 just cause it’s running. But the Gobbels car honestly would need to be taken back to bare metal and painted properly by a guy who knows what he’s doing. The Horch is definitely looking good there, that’s a solid older restoration that with a bit of shining up and some buffing would definitely be a looker, 9 out of 10 .Now the Borman car looks like hell to be honest with you. It’s missing the front bumper, the front panels are anything but straight and it looks like it was crashed into something from the front. That’s a 4 out of 10 car. Overall they all probably need some going over, but those 2 Mercedes’ need significant work. The 540k needs a full paint job done by a professional restorer, some of those little parts might need assistance but a good proper paintjob and that’s an easy 7 figure car ( not because of its infamous owner but due to rarity) The Borman car would need extensive work, many of its parts like bumpers are gone. Those are very difficult to nigh on impossible to locate and Mercedes themselves or a real professional auto restorer might have to actually make many of the parts to do it properly. The 540k painted properly is an easy multimillion dollar car as is the horch, this does not take into accounts their original owners ( that might increase or potentially decrease the value) Not sure on the alleged Borman car haven’t seen many big prewar to war era Mercedes like that

BTW, as a young lad I saw one of Hitlers MB on display in Omaha, Nebraska. It was very eerie for a young boy to see the seat Hitler sat in.
