My great grandmother lived her whole life without a bathroom, just an outhouse. My granddaddy built most of the homes my mom was raised in, just old tarpaper shacks. I love to see the old homes being renovated. I just think of the stories they could tell...the pain, the laughter, and the tears they have witnessed. Thank you for this, Donnie. May God bless you.🙏❤️

That’s precious I can’t imagine the stories those walls could tell ! My uncle never had plumbing either he was still pumping at the well at 92 ! He was precious ❤ I love to see old homesteads saved and spared from change that society seems to call better There wasn’t anything wrong with what we had growing up 😊

Hey Donnie. My grandmother on my father's side never had her driver's license. She was born in 1913 the youngest of 13. Her and my grandfather were married almost 74 years when he passed away. He was born in 1910 and was mechanic in his early years and a woodsmith in his later years. I have several pieces of furniture that he built that I will never get rid of. Thank you so much for sharing these stories. It brings back memories of a simpler time and way of life. GOD bless you and your family.

When I see those old log houses, I think of the ordeal they had stacking those logs to make the walls. Those people had a life of work that we never had. Thank you Donnie for showing this and keeping history alive. Blessings to you

It's extremely hard work. I know from personal experience. I helped build the log cabin that I now live in when I was a teenager in the early 80s. We built it using only hand tools and no power tools just like they did in the olden days. We cut the logs from trees off the family farm. I still have and use the axe that I used back then.

Hard times but good times, my grandpa was born in 1908 mountains of WNC, he worked as a carpenter and farmer his whole life. Him and my grandma never owned their own home till they was in their 50's, never took one penny of welfare and raised 2 kids, they never owned a car or had drivers license but the teaching he gave me made me who I am today. Thanks for sharing Donnie 👍

Beautiful old buildings. Kind of makes me sick how we've become such a disposable society. Every time I tried to comment, I started to sound bitter, then I remembered the verse: "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also". So, with my priorities in PROPER order, thank you again for preserving and sharing our history, for the remembering and for the learning. God bless and looking forward to the next one.

Back then, the folks believed in having a bunch a children, and they did hard work to live. Today the adults do not have time for the simple life they want complications, with less children or none at all. But when I watch what you bring on your station is memories that will not be forgotten. It is all about the simple and peaceful life which is history, and the young are missing out on a lot. So, stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings.

Id love to live in a house like one of those out in the Styx. Sittin on the porch in a rocking chair sippin on a glass of iced tea watching and listening to the bird's singing. How folks flock to the City is beyond me. I guess the government found that if people can live off the land, they can't be taxed and controlled. That's what a Free Country is. God bless you Donnie, I love your stories and look forward to the next one.

When I see these old, sad, falling down houses I think about what it must have been like once upon a time. I don't celebrate holidays but we did as kids and I can imagine the joy they felt even in some of the harder times. Families got together on the special days, the pies and other scrumptious deserts they probably made, and family was everything. The boys and men that went off to war walking away from these very homesteads. Specific memories that died along with each person. How terribly sad.

Privilaged to own lil house built in 1900. Lot of work. Folks Said I was crazy. First thing was new roof. Hand huen stone foundation. still worken on aesthetics outside. but, folks come in jaws drop. All furnishing's knick naks 1900's or made myself. You know doillies quilts afgans drapes, n such. Sleep in gma's bed. Made a grapevine head board for it. Lamps were made by grand father lampshades made by grandmother. Dug out the sprig full of beer cans garbage such. Not now Happy to boast ma and pa crawdad new babies this sprig. Brakes my heart see these fine old works of loving art left to rot. Well, you keep doing what your doing Mr. Laws. Love the stories. Without history we're lost. God bless you dear.

It's wonderful to hear that some of those old houses are being lived in and are being renovated. I wish they would do the same thing here in southeast Kentucky. Unfortunately people here tend to let those old houses sit until they rot and fall apart where they stand. They seem to be emotionally attached to them because they refused to sell them or rent them out yeah they're not attached to them enough to live in them themselves.

When we would go to the mountains of western north carolina, there was an old country store outside of Asheville on a mountain road that my dad would always stop at and get cider. The old man that ran it was in his 80's back in the early 70's. It was a sad day when we went by there and it was closed. My dad would go by there when we were in the area but it was obvious that the old man had either died or retired. One of the stores you showed reminded me of that old store. All of those old stores that we would go to have closed or simply rotted down. Such precious memories of how things used to be before the world changed.

Thank you so much for sharing this, cousin Donnie! I never pass an old deserted home without wondering how much laughter and how many tears these old places have witnessed. As a sharecropper's young'un, I lived in a number of old tenant houses that are long gone now. At one place we lived, the main house was a plantation home, built of yellow poplar, and I hate to even look that way today, at the newer home that took it's place. While we were there, we found the old slave cemetery when we were making tobacco plant beds, buried in the brush, nothing but fieldstones marking the graves. My daddy cleaned it up and kept it clean the whole time we were there, out of respect for the poor departed, but I doubt anyone even knows it's there, now. Sad! 😥I appreciate everything you share, dear cousin, and I'm so happy to see you healing and improving. I wish you and yours Shabbat Shalom, dear cousin, and may G-d richly bless you and yours! Please pray for the peace of Jerusalem. ❤

Here in western Washington state structures like what you've shown are nestled up against the foothills of the Cascade mountains. Some are old logging mills along our rivers with homes built nearby for the men who worked there and the families. Most forgotten. Some still stand. Some of the small farms have new houses, barns and farm equipment. Yet, they let the old homestead stand as a tribute. GOD bless them. As already said, these men and families 160 years ago worked and worked hard.

The Hensley Settlement in Eastern Kentucky is where my great grandmother lived until she was 14. It was abandoned and then rediscovered and preserved. I had the honor and pleasure of seeing it with my father about 8 months before he died. He and another gentleman on the tour (incidentally the last baby born in the settlement! ) were able to tell the tour guide some history that she didn't know! Awesome place! Family cemetery is still there, too.

My cousin bought our grandparents house a few years ago and he was doing some work on it. Said grandpa had his respect because it was unreal the way he had put those boards together and the house was so well built it was amazing. Took a lot of work back then with not a lot of the tools we have now. We’re all elderly now and many of us have passed on but that old house is still there. Great video!

Thank you Donnie. Simpler times where a days work out and entertainment were life itself. A person knew where they stood at the end of each day without listening to news, or checking the stock market. The weather was a personal relationship too. Just being aware of ones surroundings, learning brought forward and sometimes improved upon to meet the days needs. Each in it's own season to get through a year. Cycling over and over with all the growing and learning it takes before we meet our maker. I thank the good Lord for your way of reminded us of the importance of life... relationship. With each other, with the land, and how we care for both. God bless you Donnie, you and yours.

I appreciate the educational nature of your videos, Don. They represent a somber reality things change and don't stay the same. Work was physical compared to mentally draining. It makes sense as to why families don't hold to these properties. Keeping up a house costs way too much money, and trying to buy a home in this economy, forget about it.

Donnie, my friend, we must be a like in many ways. I love driving around and looking for the old buildings i remember from my childhood. Not too many old homes are standing. People who move into the community are bulldozing them down. Old country stores are usually left standing as landmarks in the community. The old barns that's standing doesn't look like they will be standing much longer. Those old community stories i remember the inside from a child. The old barns, being i worked a lot with my dad. I was in many of those old barns. Dad was called to check the milk cows, a hog, and even a hurt or sickly dog. I remember the people and how concerned they were about their animals. Those animals were an important part of the family. Milk cows, new calfs, baby pigs, and the family pet for the children. But, a guardian and hunting dog for the family. It was a very important part and place for everything on those farms. Thank you, Donnie, for sharing. I am glad to see you are feeling better. Stay well, my friend, and please keep putting out your wonderful videos. Sending you blessings and prayers 🙏

My Father went to one of those small one-room country schools. Was always telling us how he had to walk several miles to school everyday while his father worked the farm in South Bend IN. My grandfather made it to 90 years old and hard work was probably responsible for his longevity. What a life he must of had!!

Howdy Donnie- those old mansions are beautiful but my heart is for the old farm houses and log cabins. If they could talk they could tell some really interesting stories. It saddens me to see them go by the wayside. Having done some restoration work on some of them l know it costs lots of money to put them back like they was. Not many people can afford to spend the money it takes to restore them back to their former glory. Thank you so much for sharing these pictures . God bless
