The Roth-Sauer is a rare early automatic pistol designed by Karel Krnka, financed by Georg Roth, and manufactured by J.P. Sauer & Sohn in Germany. It is mechanically quite complex - much moreso than strictly necessary.
The action is a long-recoil type, in which the bolt and barrel remain locked together through the full rearward travel of the bolt. The bolt then stays to the rear while the barrel recoils forward, clears the empty case, and ejects it. Once the barrel is fully forward, the bolt is released to strip a new cartridge from the magazine and chamber it. The bolt has a single locking lug, which rotates into a recess in the barrel extension to lock.
The firing mechanism on the Roth-Sauer is very similar to the later Roth-Steyr 1907 pistol - and to the modern style of the Glock and others. It uses a striker to fire, which is tensioned to half-cock by the bolt and barrel recoiling with each shot. Full tension on the striker is delivered by the trigger pull, resulting in a approximation of a double-action system. Very much ahead of its day.
The Roth-Sauer is chambered for the 7.65mm Roth-Sauer cartridge, which uses a 13mm-long case and it practically identical to the short 7.65mm Frommer (the pistol also shares characteristics with Frommer pistols, as Roth was involved with both designers). It is a quite light cartridge, propelling a 71 grain bullet at 820 fps.

Absolutely beautiful firearm. I wish there were a modern version of these in 9mm with removable magazines and sans manual safety. The internal firing pin safety is absolutely ingenious - I'm so glad you pulled this apart for us to see. I really love the twin "steps" down in thickness (looks similar to the one the Hi Power has where the slide ends), as well as the frame cutouts around the barrel shroud. Just a gorgeous gun.

Yeah, the clip loading would be a deal-breaker for most people today. OTOH "I wanna buy a spare clip for my Roth-Sauer" would actually be correct (for all the clip/magazine nitpickers out there). The long-recoil system proved scalable up to handle some pretty powerful cartridges (e.g. the Gabbett-Fairfax Mars, which was the AutoMag of its time in every way that mattered - including, sadly, reliability and sales volume). Do the detail design right, and I'm sure even 9mm +P+ wouldn't bother it much.

Well, technically speaking Karel Krnka wasn't Hungarian at all - it gets complicated: Born (1858) in the Austrian Empire, in at that time Hungary, what is today Romania, to Czech parents :) After the creation of Czechoslovakia, he moved back, and worked for Praga and Brno arsenals. Passed away in Prague, Czechoslovakia, 1926. And to get things more interesting, his father was Sylvester Krnka, also a gun designer: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvester_Krnka

Damn that's a really cool design. The way it only half cocks the striker when it cycles, the push button bolt release (and the fact it has a last round hold open at all) and the way the firing pin can only protrude past the bolt face when the bolt rotates and locks into battery is all unlike anything I've seen in such an old automatic pistol before. Seems very advanced for its time and the whole thing is almost "futuristic sci-fi" looking by turn of the century standards.

Early and transitional pieces of equipment, whether tools, vehicles, weapons or whatnot, are always interesting. It is cool to see things that are not yet standard and everyone tests out ideas to see what will take over. Early planes, early jets, early cell-phones and gaming consoles... Hi Ian, have you heard of the World of Guns video game ? It is a game currently available for free on Steam, in which the objective is to operate and disassemble guns which are rendered down to every single factory part and accessories. It is possible to fire a gun while in a cutaway mode, or simply click and hide the parts you need to see what's happening. The game is free, but only a certain amounts of guns are available unless you buy packs of models. Initially you can unlock the colt 1911, the AK-47, and the MP5 (seeing the rollers recess as you fire is pretty neat). For 7$ you can get a pack of 15 guns, and until December 2nd you can get the license to all current and future gun models for 25$ instead of 40$ (more than 70 guns currently I believe) The game also includes vehicles such as the BMP3, cars, hot rods, motorcycles, etc... Rendered down to every factory part, it includes artillery and machine guns (the Maxim, the mighty German 88mm AA gun...), the Stg 44 is also present (the "WWII" pack is 10$ I believe). I wouldn't mention it here if it wasn't for the remarkable accuracy of the models. The only thing that sometimes somewhat lacks accuracy to a small degree is animations, and that's really nitpicking on my part.

Really neat piece, I guess it could be safely carried loaded and cocked with no manual safety engaged. The only thing stopping it from being a modern gun is the absence of a removable magazine. The long recoil action makes it easily scalable to more powerful ammo. And finally, the 19th Century exterior design is really gorgeous.

Interesting design. They sure did build them pretty in the early days. I wonder how feasible it would be to chamber them in the French 7.65 long? It has slightly better ballistics than the 32 ACP. The ergonomics look great. I always liked the M1907 Roth Steyr as well. So, apparently, did the Hungarian household cavalry. Great video, as always. Thank you.

There seems to be a trend/theme of overengineering pistols in Austria-Hungary at that time, I wonder why. A simple blowback (if they had them back then) would have been sufficient for that cartridge. It's a beautiful gun tho, always liked the Frommer-stop and other Austria-Hungarian pistols.

Perhaps they had horrid visions of the bolt flying back into the user's face if a catastrophic failure occurred and wanted to make as absolutely sure as they could that there was no possibility of that? Maybe it was a way of compensating for perceived shortcomings in metallurgy? Maybe they had dreams of moving up to something bigger and better with more kick, and figured they might as well start with a strongly locked breech design and just scale up as required, once they'd climbed the learning curve? Who knows?

What does Ian actually do for the auction house? Does he review new acquisitions for the house, or repair and prepare them for auction? I wonder how he became so knowledgable about all of this. I learn a lot about mechanics here. I am a hobbiest 3D modeler, and I wanted to learn about mechanics before modeling a sci-fi rifle. I designed this one to look a bit "Elysium"/"District 9". I'd be curious what you guys think about the design and possible flaws of it (I realize this is difficult with sci-fi guns, because they are mostly made to look cool; mine is a bullpup design); thanks for helping me with your videos, Ian! dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10191409/ilyagi_MC30.JPG dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10191409/ilyagi_MC30_detail.JPG dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10191409/ilyagi_MC30_detail_01.JPG images are taken in Unreal Engine 4.

Forgotten Weapons .32 was almost a decade old by then...actually that might be rather new for ammo. Now that I think about it .357 magnum and .44 magnum existed many years before any company was making production models. Also monopoly on ammo makes a lot of sense. They stand to make more money on the ammo than the firearm sales.
