Sweden was a remarkably early adopted of the light machine gun, for a nation not involved in World War One. Looking over the designs that existed right after the war, Sweden opted to purchase 700 (technically, 703) commercial BAR automatic rifles from Colt (by way of FN). These were configured to Swedish request, with substantial pistol grips, mid-mounted bipods, and chambered for the 6.5x55mm Swedish cartridge. This initial purchase was followed by a license to produce the guns domestically at the Carl Gustafs Stads factory in 1923, and another approximately 7500 were made by 1935.
In 1937, the design was modified to allow for a quick-change barrel, designated the m/37. Another 15,400 of these were built by 1944, and many oft he earlier m/21 guns updated to the new configuration. These would serve as Sweden’s standard support weapons until replaced by the FN MAG in the late 1950s, and remaining in limited service until the 1980s.

FBI viewed it as automatic rifle though. Funny thing is that as shown by Project Lightening videos, US troops just suggested to make *two different* BARs - one LMG(bipod, heavier barrel) and one automatic rifle for troops(lighter, compensator, pistol grip and lowered RoF). Problem was that army compressed both into single gun that was doomed as those requirements opposed each other:(

My granddad used one of these during his training just after WWII. He even won medals for being the best shot in the regiment. Sadly, he died over a decade ago or I would show him this video.

@@muhammadnursyahmi9440 6mm Lee Navy was adopted in 1895, several years before MacArthur had even joined the US Army, let alone even be in a position to seriously influence any kind of Small Ames development. Not to mention that he wasn't even in the right service in the first place, given that 6mm Lee Navy was, as the name implies, only used by the US Navy.

The P on the selector is for semi-auto and stands for "Patronvis".

Which makes me think Ian has the settings wrong. He designates P, "patronvis", as full auto. The issue is that "patronvis" means, literally, either "by the cartridge" or "single cartridge", which is kind of a weird name for full auto. Especially since A almost certainly stands for "Automat" or some version of the word.

It also makes sense that the full auto position, unlike the AR platform, should be in the middle, like the AK. Full auto is heavily wasteful and, if one is panicky to get the gun running, slamming the safety forward to fire will land you in semi auto, which you will want to be in 99% of the time over full auto.

I had an opportunity to fire a Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55, oh nearly 35 years ago. What a sweet round. I can only imagine how well the synergy between the BAR and Swedish 6.5 is.

@@jeremyroberts4595 Yep, 6.5x55 is a beast of a caliber. I have a competition rifle (FSR89) built in 1989, based off of an m/96 built in 1912 (if I remember correctly). My friends who fired this rifle at the long range part of our shooting range preferred it to my modern long range rifle chambered in .308 even though it has a massive muzzle brake (the Vertebrae one). The FSR89 uses diopter sights and I basically shoot as well with it as with my modern long range rifle.

Nitty picky detail: The monogram at 4:12 is not for the Swedish Royal house per se, but that of the city "Carl Gustaf's Stad" (other name for the city today known as Eskilstuna, and the city that gave the factory its name) - the city name ITSELF is taken from the king Carl X Gustaf (r.1655-1660). The monogram is a stylization of a mongram (showing a C enveloping a G) Carl X Gustaf used back in the 1600's. So 1600's King -> City -> Rifle factory.

*Arms factory. Gevär only recently came to mean "rifle", previously it refers to arms in general. A sword for example would be refered to as a "sidogevär" (similair to "side arm" in english). I believe, but am not certain, that the german "gewehr" has a similair double meaning.

@@lavrentivs9891 Gevär and Gewehr are the same word basically. The important bit of the word is "Wehr". In both Swedish and Germans I translate into defense/protection. Words for things invented or made publicly available in the 1500´s usually has very similar names in Swedish and german, due to the wars and trading in the Baltic. AND! the Swedish word, "värja" can mean both "deflect" and "Smallsword" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_sword) again "vär" is the important bit.

These guns actually saw combat use in the Finnish Winter War 1939-40 with the Swedish volunteers and in the Finnish hands (mainly coastal troops) during the continuation war 1941-44. Not in great numbers, as Russians were kind enough to supply Finns with thousands of DP-28:s.

@@mrfancypanzer549 Sure, but again, soldiers during both WWI and WWII tended to have a better physique than modern soldiers do, and the Stg 44 being chambered in 7.92x33mm is a good example of this.

@@daedalus6433 Uh, no they didn't and the 7.92x33mm is roughly equivalent to .300 Blackout, it was picked exactly because it was low recoil.

@@daedalus6433 To be even fairer, the 6.5X55 has been used for decades to hunt moose, which are quite a lot bigger and tougher than a human. And that without the nasty kick of of the "full sized" rounds like 30-06 or 7.92. To be fairer still, most people "handled" the heavier recoils because that is what they got, and refusing to use your weapon landed you in jail, if you were lucky.

Yes, but did you know we also tested the H&K G3 in 6.5x55? My dad used the FN MAG during his service in 1959. They never got to even see the M37, which was used by Hemvärnet (Home guards) from then on.

But before that we experimented with converting our BARs to belt feed which actually worked okay, but wasn't adopted for standard use.

I think the troops in that trial prefered the finnish kalashnikovs but hig comand did not want to adopt a russian caliber to be closer to nato without actually joining. If they had the ak5 would have been unessesary.

@@amclips2995 Antagligen är väl ak5:an bättre, men inte så mycket bättre att det hade varit värt att byta kaliber. 7.62x39 i ak och 7.62x51nato eller rent av den där svenska magnum-ksp patronen i kulsprutorna hade varit en intressant lösning.

My grandfather was one of the chief engineers for Gevärs Faktori, he went through WW1 at a young age and served in WW2 together with the Norwegians against the regime. He was one of the most talented weapon specialists in northern Sweden and recieved medals for his service. He mostly worked on things like Lvakan though but was involved with some other weapon productions. God bless the men and women that served in WW2, they where the greatest generation.

And what differences would you expect to see aside from: - Bigger trigger guard for use with gloves - Larger/beefier charging handle for use with gloves - Modified gas block and bolt for use with gloves... Err i meant winter. - Painted in corrosive resistant green rather than black for use with gloves... Err wet muddy cold saltwater fed coastal winters.

@@RealCadde What they told us in the army was that the AK 5 (A, this was in 00/01) also had a better firing pin, as the first rifles, ca 1986, still had belgian firing pins that cracked on occasion. Luckily my rifle was from 1987 and was all swedish.^^

That seems to me, to be the *PERFECT* BAR!! I have a Swedish AG42B, in 6.5x55 and enjoy shooting it. The cartridge is simply super nice to shoot. This version of the BAR should be considered the *ultimate* !! The operator would have felt *NO* recoil at all, even in full auto... JMHO. YMMV.

You pronounce "Carl-Gustaf's Rifle Factory" really well. From a Swede who did military service 1966-67 and had kpist M / 45 as a personal weapon. Of course, I got to learn many others. Armor shot, heavy machine gun and combat and ambush with the bayonet and throwing hand grenade. All in northernmost Sweden where we could stay out in the cold for weeks.

The m 21 was actually swedens third lmg. The first one was a watercooled flapperlocking kjellman lmg that was to expensive and only saw very limited adoption in 1914 or so. The second the Madsen but i think only for cavalry in limited numbers.

I en Sold I instruktion för armen från 1949 som jag har liggande någonstans ingår fortfarande hästburet kavalleri i den krigstida orginaisationen som en lättrörlig insatstyrka och på flera bilder har de spänt en kg m21 på sidan av en packhäst om jag minns rätt, självklart var de tänkta att strida till fots

The Swedish BAR wasn't the only one with a curved magazine. In the 1920s a small number of BARs were made in .303 British, for trials in the UK. They had curved magazines to accomodate the rimmed cartridge.

@Forgotten Weapons Are you sure you got the safety right ? You say P stands for full auto and A for semi auto. I'm pretty sure P stands for "Punkt" as in "dot [fire]", single fire and A stands for "Automat [fire]", as in automatic fire. And S ofcorse stands for "Säkrad" as in "safe/secured".

Correct, S=säkrad (safe) p=patronvis(semi automatic or directly translate cartridge-by-fire)A=automateld (fully automatic/fullauto). Ian also on his own website has the soldier Manuel for the army for equipment 1951 edition ( www.forgottenweapons.com/wp-content/uploads/Swedish/Soldatinstruktion%20for%20Armen%20(Swedish,%201951).pdf) on page 23 pargraf 242 in swedish talks about the M/21 selector switch which direct translation is; When the selector switch is on A (automatic fire), the trigger rod is kept in a horizontal position by the trigger link when firing, as long as the trigger is held back. the frame piece is not hooked up. When the selector switch is on P (cartridge-by-fire), the trigger rod is moved in a horizontal position when firing, after which the trigger link releases its grip. the spring of the trigger rod then presses the clamping teeth upwards, so that the frame piece is hooked up again. When the selector switch is on S (safe), the trigger cannot be moved backwards, so firing is impossible.

Quite right, home of the then Carl Gustaf Stads Gevärsfaktori, makers of this beauty and later the Carl Gustaf m/48 8,4cm recoilless rifle (my sweet ol' grg) amongst others. The latter named after a swedish king and not as has been reported both on this channel and other gun-tubers after Carl Gustaf Mannerheim. We swedes like Mr. Mannerheim, we just tend to like our kings more (in general).

There were also Swedish experiments during ww2 in making the m/37 belt fed. It worked but was never adopted. One issue was that every time you cleard the weapon four cartridges would drop to the ground.

Fun fact Ian. The FN MAG58 is basically a beltfed up side down Swedish KG M37 (Since the KG37 has a replaceable barrel that is replaced in the same way as the MAG 58 barrel) One may even wonder if FN actually took the construction from the Swedish KG37. I use to say that a MAG58 is a MG/34/42 lidded with a upside down KG M37 mechanism and barrel

FN had designed the FN model D, a gun which the m/37 was largely based off of. So I think FN had a look at their own model D. Another fun fact: Sweden experimented with converting the m/37 to belt feed, which worked reasonably well actually but was not adopted for service.

The crown "C" on Carl Gustaf weapons, or other products is the company logo or marking. Swedish armed forces owner mark is a simpel crown, a "catfot" for navy, both later replaced by the "three Crowns" mark. There is also a other difference in Swedish markings, if its for army or airforce addoption the model no has a small "m" like m/21, and the navy use a capital "M" like M/27.

The crowned C is actually the insignia of the Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori. The Army stamp is the crown above the serial number. Today, the Swedish Armed Forces use the three crowns as a mark, it’s on almost every single item, from boots to firearms to fighter aircraft. If there is a three-crown mark in it, it is government property.

The marking has no legal meaning at all, it is just a marking, probably not even registered as it can be found on anything from civilian t-shirts to the hockey team.

I have one of those. Never shot it and didn't even really know what it was. I was called to remove it from my grandfathers house after he died because I'm the only one with a license. It's been sitting in the locker since then and it's in very, very good condition (as new, I think it was issued and just sat there until he died). So, thank you Forgotten Weapons.

4:25 you got that wrong, it's "Patronvis eld" "Automatisk eld" and "Säkrad", so single shot, full auto and safe. not full auto, semi auto and safe.

Even better knowing we did the FN MAG in 6.5 swedish before the whole 7.62 NATO thing took over and the lot got converted into 7.62.

@@johanolsson6502 If I recall, the only difference between the 6.5 and 7.62 versions were the barrel. I seem to recall older editions of the SoldF handbook going into making sure you remembered to use the approriate barrel when changing ammunition.

Thanks for the discussion of the M/37 at the end. I was wondering whether it would have been possible to convert an existing BAR with a fixed barrel to a detachable barrel setup. Good to know that you can because Sweden actually did that.

FN of Belgium also tried marketing a BAR rechambered in 7.62x51 - this was around the 1950s, if memory serves - which also had a QD barrel feature, as well as a pistol grip and some other modern features. Unfortunately, they had few takers so it was discontinued.

The late, great Ian Hogg, small arms historian, always said the ideal military cartridge was something in 6, 6.5 or 7mm caliber. Through the 20th century military tests confirmed that as the ideal solution/compromise, but as often happens the people that make such decisions are always the older senior commanders still fighting the last war.
