Cool Forgotten Weapons Merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
The Spanish military, like many others, was quite interested in developing a new semiautomatic or selective fire combat rifle after World War II. Franco's political ties to Germany (combined with Spanish neutrality in the war) gave them unusually good access to German arms designs, and the Spanish experimented with several variations on the StG-44 in the late 1940s and 1950s. Of course, this would ultimately lead to the development and adoption of the roller-delayed CETME, but before that the intermediate cartridge idea was very much a subject of Spanish attention.
This particular rifle, designated Mosqueton CB-51, was one of those intermediate cartridge experiments. It retained the furniture and general appearance of a Mauser bolt action short rifle, but used a long stroke gas piston and rotating bolt in a self-loading action. Only 12 of these were made, although several other designs were also prototyped concurrently (including others also designated CB-51, confusingly).

The grip safety control actually does make sense in this context. In order to reload as a right handed operator you would have to use your firing grip to lock back the bolt (because it’s set up on the right hand side like an AK or an M1), drop the spent magazine, insert a new one, and then place your firing hand back onto the grip safety; thus releasing the bolt, stripping a cartridge from the new magazine, and chambering it. It just seems like an ergonomic simplification - similar to the ZH-29 or the KE7 swiss LMG.
@TocGan

I think the same, in that times nobody reloaded a bolt rifle like we reload a semiauto with magazines... you keep the rifle with the support hand and reload with your firing hand, I guess the guy keept that mentality, so the grip safety weren't activated...
@ryanwitman8672
@ryanwitman8672 Жыл бұрын
@@TocGan True, but there are a large number of modern rifles that require you to reload with your firing grip as well. For example; the Ruger Mini 14, all AK variants, M14s & M1As, M1 Carbines and Garands. I’m sure there’s a ton more examples as well.
@ryanwitman8672
@ryanwitman8672 Жыл бұрын
@@TocGan Although as an addendum, It can be argued that these all evolved from the Garand, which evolved from the RSC 1917 originally designed during the first world war - well into the era of bolt action reloading doctrine.

Looks like a nice carbine, except for the grip safety/lever thing. My first thought was that it looked a lot like the Mini-14 and is about the same size. We know the 7.92x33 is a useful cartridge. Here's a bonus- the sights are not wildly optimistic either. 280 British or something similar would have been interesting in this envelope size too. Spanish arms are usually pretty interesting. Great video as always. Thank you

Hi Ian, the cleaning rod style is the same as the early K98k Mausers. Early K98k rifles (pre-1941) have a short 25cm cleaning rod while on later rifles the length was increased to 32cm. The idea was indeed to have multiple cleaning rods threaded to eachother to create a long cleaning rod. For individual cleaning the soldier was issued with the Reinigungsgerät 34.

One need only look at the modern commercial repro M1 Garands, M1 Carbines, M14 Rifles or the Mini-14 and Mini-30 carbines to see the love that yanks especially have for this action type.

The grip safety would normally be in one's right hand, which would require either rotating the rifle over to operate the bolt handle, or switching the grip to one's left hand. But would be a natural fit for a left handed shooter.

My thought is the whole idea behind the MP42-44 / STG44+ rifles was ease of manufacture due to extensive use of pressed sheet metal. If this rifle comes along nearly a decade later, but goes back to a heavy wood and forged steel component construction, for an intermediate cartridge, isn’t that a major step backwards?

Rather than M1 Rifle, the Parts show origin from the M1 CARBINE---recoil springs, trigger mechanism, cocking handle, etc the gas cylinder reflects Garand design. Back in the 60s, a 'smith took a M1 Carbine and converted it to .30 Kurz... 7,62x33 !!! Case head is .308 size. Seems to have worked quite well; I took up the design, andbuilt a 7,62x41 on an SKS platform, the cases being made from 7,62 NATO cases, using a .308- 1,5" die. Ammo fatter than 7 62x39 USSR, and 41mm chamber lenght due to Smith pushing reamer too far in! It was an earlier PRC SKS, with threaded barrel: much easier to remove for re-chambering. DocAV

Calling it 8mm in writing is just plain wrong. .38, .303 and 9mm are actually called .38, .303 and 9mm. I have not heard anybody outside of the US call 7.92 an 8mm round.

Very intresting. I know USA buyed the spanish pattent of a pistol used in vietnam. And the CETME B and C is one of the most sold guns of the world and since Franco (Dictator from thirties til late 75 and youngest General of Europe) he did military and govermental up grades stil used today and in vehicles to. Even though many dont admit that he did MANY very good things beside ending a war that was almost lost by the king Alfonso XIII he asumed the leadership of the country, NOT killing the royalty but exiling them. and giving it back to the heir of the moment. The Normandy invasion was an imitation of what he did bieng a Liutenet Colonel in north of africa in Alucemas. By the way he was payed less than the president of Spain now and was cofounder of the Spanish Legion.

Had it not been a rare example and of historic & intrinsic value, I would be neat to fire again. Ideally a new barrel made to match the original and keep the demilled original or weld it up and have the bore relined. Again had it been a common gun that could return from the crypt of "wall-hanger" status.

This thing looks like the bastard child of an M1 carbine and a Kar98k who was raised by the M1 after remarrying with a Sturmgewehr.

grip bolt release was probably for storing a loaded gun, and not for fast reloads.

I may be totally off base, but it looks to me like there wasn't any tab on the follower to hold the bolt open. that let me to wonder if the bolt would always lock when it was opened regardless of whether the mag was loaded or not. this would explain why holding the grip safety would keep the bolt from locking open, it would be necessary for semi-auto fire. maybe it was never meant to be a last shot hold open. the only problem i see with this system is if you were trying to clear a jam in the heat of battle and used your firing hand, the bolt would lock, although it wouldn't be much of an issue because as soon as you got your firing grip, it would close. this would also slightly slow your reload times because you would need to retract the bolt before you could use a stripper clip. however, it would still be somewhat faster than manipulating a mauser style bolt for a stripper reload. very interesting design. please keep up the good work, as a student of firearm design, i find this series amazing.

On second thought, after looking at it again, it looks like the tab might be on the front of the follower. oh well, that shoots down my theory

Could the 5 round magazines, be used for blanks for rifle grenades? Perhaps a forward thinking provision for sonething not made?

More likely for parades. Short mags are safer for the "joggling" that honorary guards do for show.

I am surprised the seller wouldn't allow a cerrosafe casting to definitively determine the caliber.

Cause it doesn't actually matter as long as you can't shoot it.

cerrosafe won't come out with the holes drilled. They had to drill the chamber or it would still fire.
