Yesterday we took a look at the vz.52/57 rifle in 7.62x39mm, and today I have one of its 7.62x45mm predecessors out at the range. Not so much to do some shooting, as it turns out, but to fix malfunctions and wait for hangfires and duds...
However, we did have enough success to put some 7.62x45mm into ballistics gel and see what it does.

not to mention it helps shatter the illusion non-shooting enthusiast like myself have, thinking Firearms always work flawlessly and unrealistically like they do in video games and movies, I.E. they never malfunction, aren't heavy to carry loaded or unloaded, have ammunition quality trouble, or have flip up when fired (since actors tend to not know their supposed to fake the guns kicking back since their prop rounds aren't strong enough to do it for them)

The Grenada operation was in the early '80s, obviously long after GCA '68. The most likely reason the Marine souvenirs didn't have import marks was simply that they came in via a Marine's seabag rather than an importer (A pox on the bureaucrats who have since restricted war trophies!). In the same way, I have a CZ-75 without marks that was bought by an American serviceman in Europe and brought back as a personal firearm.

Me too. I have a CZ-75 with no import markings that came home with a serviceman stationed in West Germany. Interestingly, the date code shows it's exactly 20 years older than the CZ-75B that was the second handgun I ever bought. By pure coincidence, my HK USP is also exactly 20 years older than my HK USP Compact.

The Vz52 issued to reservist in Nicaragua came from Cuba, the ammo was super dirty. The lack of maintenance and bad weather made this rifles useless after a few rounds, many of dead Nicaraguan conscripts found with a jamb Vz52 during the war with the FDN/contras.

You can make new brass, no problem. I've been doing it for just over 20 years from other boxer primed cartridges.

I knew the lacquered case ammo would work well. I have maybe 5,000 rounds stashed in my vault. I at one time owned 5 vz52 rifles but now am down to 3. I rarely get these guns out to shoot them. I'm sure someday my ammo will end up in my estate auction.

Measuring sectional energy, the 7.62x39 round should have about 85% of the penetration of 7.62x45. Ofc if the bullets tumble, shed bits, or just destruct the results become pretty random.

Technically any Spitzer bullet will tumble after impact as the rear is the heavy end. This is what makes full size rifle rounds so deadly.

@@skepticalbadger Oh? So why is a 5.56 less immediately lethal than a 7.62 say? Same velocity? Even a dirty old 30-30 is more immediately lethal than .223 and it's what 600 fps slower?

@@owensthilaire8189Those are intermediate cartridges no? Clearly projectile velocity and mass are integral to the performance of cartridges. Looks like 5.56 has like 600 J less energy than 30-30 if wikipedia is to be trusted.

@@owensthilaire8189 Any can, esp if you hit bone. I would say most don't in soft tissue and what makes rifle bullets deadly is the ability to penetrate what you are aiming at, at very log ranges. I prefer a stable round that is not prone to tumbling in soft tissue because part of that causes the bullet to veer away from its point of impact which is another reason that rifles are deadly; they are accurate.

I love seeing these rifles from the 50s used by Egypt like the Rasheed that my Grandfather would have seen when he served at the Suez canal. It is like seeing a part of history that relates to what he saw at my age and unfortunately would have been in the receiving end of.

Czechs (and Slovaks in that period) was the only Warsaw pact Army that accept only caliber under SSSR pressure. They didnt produce Tokarevs, Kalashnikovs, SKS under licence. They had his way and unique arms list

Didn't Ian say that ČSK was on good terms with Stalin so nobody cared until after his death? If bit bigger 7,62x39 is the result then I think we didn't really lose anything by switching to Soviet cartridge, it's not like we had some G11 caseless space bullets.

Salesman claimed it was possible to remove the insert, because there were millions of rounds of 7.62x45 coming in for cheap "soon". Same shop also later had about 20 MAS49/56s rechambered in .308. Asking price was $180. Oh if I could go back in time. Just like timing the stock market.....

Reminds me I came across a very large stash of 7.62X45 ammo about 20 years ago. Tens of thousands of rounds in the back room of a shop. I think one of my troops eventually bought it all. He had quite a collection of CZ-52s. 🤠

It is kind of amazing. The video was kind of a failure, because of the crap ammunition. Ian still manages to make it great video, even with that ammo impediment. He is a weapon master; we all know that. Ian is also really, really good at making videos, no matter what happens.

When 70yr old ammo and magazines let you down, the designers thoughtfully provide an un-looseable bayonet. Truly a rifle for the ages. Also, handloading can take care of the ammo problem. Cases can be made from .220 Swift cases, available everywhere.

I bought one of these in the late 90's for something like $125. Unfortunately, when the ammo supply dried up i sold it. I never had an issue with the steel cased ammo, and really enjoyed shooting it. As a teenager i was really taken by the accuracy and the "switchblade" bayonet. I definitely regret parting ehh that rifle; but i was young and dumb...

Have shot about 3000 rds. of the steel core 7.62x45 ammo in the 1990s in several of the black coated rifles. The ammo was reliable except one batch have multiple indentions around the base of the cartridge. All ammo were in old mint green 15 rd. boxes on 5 round stripper clips. The C52 had slightly more recoil than a Russian SKS. The CZ 52 was robust and reliable. The main problem was cleaning the complicated gas system. From sight covers were not included with these guns and mags were pricey.

I have 3 of these riffles, a $200 rhino lined one, and 2 okish ones I got from Century 5 or so years ago. None matching, of course. I only have 300 or so rounds, and only shot 30, but had no duds and few hang fires. Must just be lucky with the batch I got. I actually really like these guns and have been wanting a 52/57 for a long time, stupid me I've watched them go from $500 guns to $1.5k+. Great vid as always Ian!

I had a few hang fires with some .45acp anmo my dad was given. This was around 2000. The head stamps on the ammo was 1917.

Interesting gun AND cartridge. A lot of sources call 7,62x45 intermediate due to both it's power, dimensions AND the role it filled.

I've been handloading for my 7.62x45 VZ-52 SHE rifle for a couple of decades now. I make the brass from any number of reloadable donor cartridges, to include .220 Swift, 6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schoenauer, or 6.5x50 Carcano. Accurate Arms 1680 powder is the go-to propellant, and 123gr AK jacketed bullets work perfectly. Buffalo Arms also sells reloadable boxer-primed ammunition.

Thanks--I completed an NRA Rifle Instructor course last weekend and I anticipate having students using old ammo for their class. I won't be using your demonstration of misfires and hang fires during those classes but will remember and when a student's rifle has several misfires and hang fires from the same box of ammunition, I'll handle that IAW with NRA gun safety rules. Your channel showcases old guns with old ammunition. Sometimes only reloaded ammunition is available for the antiques. Your channel is educational because I do expect to have students in future classes bringing old ammo or reloaded ammo to shoot for their class.

I know you've done videos in the past that were about "basics" like different operating systems for different guns, and I thought one on specific types of malfunctions would be interesting. As someone who's only gone shooting a handful of times, I'm not super familiar with terms like hangfire or squibs, and it would be cool to see what is actually happening mechanically when these malfunctions occur

I took mine out last year with the surplus ammo and had 1 good shot. Outside of that there were 4 hang fires and 20 no fires. At that point I called it a day and went home. :)

From a european perspective, it seems like some of your videos (not this one)would surely increase the interest in certain guns like ww2 films would increase demand for ww2 guns etc. Im not familiar with them so i dont know

Not so much. However, he certainly has had an inflationary (specu-flation) effect on the collector's market. At least a significant contributor. RIA and Morphy's used to be great auction houses for deals. Speculators have found them and now...well, a considerable inflationary effect rippling across the used gun market. Thanks guntubers!😂

Huh... I have an early Century K98k import with a cracked stock. They did the same thing to fix it. They used a spare K98 cross bolt and wood glue to attempt to repair the stock. No bedliner though. It can't hit water if I throw it out of a boat, though. Thanks Century!

Force is the square of the velocity. A 100fps increase with 1 additional g in weight is a significant increase in power between the 45 & 39

There is a nut around gas system that often shoots loose. It has to be taken apart to clean the rifle. And is often not torqued back on tight. If it unscrews even a little you get short strokes.

Numrich used to sell a small ring that you could Loctite into the chamber and adapt it to 7.62x39. never knew anyone who tried it.

Back in the 80s I had one and a batch of reliable ammo, gun was ruff outside but functioned well and was accorate as an SKS. Had to cull my herd and it went. Recently found about 150 rds of the ammo stashed away.

That 122 grain bullet for 7.62x39 probably means thin jackets . 5.56 M193 55 grain ball is influential still and it's thin jacket with fragmentation is a standard for effective fmj bullets . The 7.62x45 cz has some very good numbers ,130 grains at 2500 fps is equal to the old 6.8 spc II silver state armory "combat loads" . It also seems that Mr. Bill Wilson may have been influenced by the 7.62x45 ,with their .300 ham'r and the older 7.62x40 WT.

Funny. When i used this one, i newer had any issues with her. Only one problem was fail to eject, just once. Hello from czech republic. Love to see our flag and guns around the world. :D

Try that ballistic gelatin with a 7.35 m.m. carcano military round, they have a aluminum tip, and supposedly tumbles on impact.

I bought several hundreds of rounds when I purchased my rifle MANY years ago. Haven't had any issues with it like you had, but I haven't shot it in over 20 years due to the corrosive nature of the ammo.

Excellent content, I would love to see a period correct webley revolver .455 in ballistic gell, I don't think it's ever been done...but I could be wrong 😬

i have had maybe one or two not go bang. but no hang fires. guns function perfectly. and i have had new production made for the gun. troublesome to reform correctly. but doable with the correct dies.

i had one for a few years in the late 90s... never found ammo that worked, sold rifle. never got to shoot it, it was the black type. neat bayonet, could flick it.

My 52 firing pin was stuck from not being cleaned after firing old ammo. Used oil and a steel punch to get firing pin out, this flatten the pin tip a little. Decided to try old pin until new firing pin arrived. The flatten tip fired almost all of the rounds that did not fire in a friends 52.
